Mike Savageaux and JeffZastawney took charge ofthe store in the morning, while it was run by Sue Tighe. Wendy Parlin, Deb Poulin. and Steve Gemelli at lunch time. The Bookstore's stock consisted of many school supplies such as: Pens. Pencils. Notebooks. Bookcovers, and everyones favorite. Candy. All the profits from the store are used to support the yearbook. This year the bookstore was very successful and will hopefully become a Grafton High tradition. tw 5 es- , xl N I 4 k I 3 250 Years Old White men probably did not set foot in this part of the country until 1635, when a party of some sixty Englishmen emigrated to the banks ofthe Connecticut River. The conversion of the Indians began in 1646 when John Eliot, known as the apostle to the Indians, began his work among the Indians at Natick, who were friendly with the Nipmuck tribe. Eliot probably arrived in the area of Grafton between 1651 and 1654. Grafton was originally a portion of the Nipmuck country, so called by its being owned and occupied by a large tribe of Indians called Nipmucks, which included the Hassanamesits, the tribe which made its home in Grafton. The town, originally known as Hassanamesit Cmeaning a place of small stones' 'J, was founded in 1660 by Rev. John Eliot for Christian Indians. At the time it was established it contained 12 families. An Indian church was established here in 1671, the second of its kind in the country. Eliot said of the town that No Indian town gave stronger assurances of success than this, at that time. Hassanamesit had become the central point of civilization and Christianity to the whole Nipmuck country. ' ' A school was established, where the Bible was read and studied in the Indian language. Young men were here educated and sent into the neighboring towns to preach the gospel. A regular govemment was created, and the fonns of law strictly observed. The area, later called Hassanamisco, was sold to white settlers in 1720,s. In 1728 The English inhabitants voted to build a meeting-house and a school, as well as homes for minister and the schoolmaster. The petition presented to the General Court to incorporate the township was signed by all but two or three ofthe inhabitants and presented on April 15, 1735. The petitioners asked merely for town privileges and were willing to leave so unimportant a matter as a name to the General Court. Grafton is indebted to Govemor Belcher for its name, given to honor a distinguished Englishman, Charles Fitz Roy, the Duke of Grafton, a member of the Privy Council and grandson of King Charles II. The Duke of Grafton was reported to have warned King George III about his poor treatment of the American colonies. When the king decided to send a large body of German troops to help British forces, Grafton answered earnestly, Your ,majesty will find too late that twice the number will only increase the digrace, and never effect the purpose. A big year in the history of Grafton. This is the year that Grafton becomes 250 years old. Along with a birthday, Grafton has acquired a new Municipal Center. The center now houses all the Town oftices as well as Ouinsigamond Com- munity College and Worcester State College. The new Municipal Center is much larger than the old Town House on the common. This center will serve the community very well for at least another 100 years. After a rebuilding year in 1983. the team returned with a strong varsity that included thirteen seniors. Led by captains Tony Molinari. Mike Haseltine, and David Mason, the Indians were determined to improve their record. And improve it they did. The team ended their season with a 9-I record, becoming undefeated SWCL Champs. Two memor- able wins took place within the League. The Indians broke a seven-year losing streak and finally beat the Northbridge Rams. Grafton also took a win over David Prouty by coming from behind in the last moments of the game to win 16-13. Grafton's only loss was to the Bartlett Indians. a Division II school. Ill Superbowl. The GAME had it all. From start to finish there was non-stop action. Grafton. throughout the game, showed it could play defensively as well as offensively. not allowing the opposition to score. The gang-green defense controlled the line of scrimmage and proceeded to crush the Aztecs. While not as offensively sharp in the Superbowl as in other games this season. the Indians made the most of all opportunities. Crucial turn-overs made by Assabet resulted in 9 points for Grafton. The remaining I3 points did come from the Indians' potent offensive attack. This convincing victory proved Grafton to be the deserving champions. The 1984 squad started the season with one objective: win one game at a time. then win the Superbowl. Congratulations upon reaching that objective. It was a season to remember. This past season saw the GHS girls tennis team make great strides in becoming a major factor in the SWCL. In his second year as coach Mr. Barlow had most of the same team back this year. He was very pleased with and proud ofthe improvements made in both the team's attitude and record. Included in the season were upset victories over Bartlett and Hudson, plus splits in the matches with Hopedale, David Prouty. and Leister. Once again. Lisa Nichols displayed the talents that place her among the best tennis players in the league. The senior captain posted a log of seven victories against only four defeats - despite playing the entire season with a very painful shoulder injury. The team was also sparked by the surprising singles play of freshman Kara Nichols and Mary Noonan, each of whom should present a real dilemma for the opposition over the next three years. In the first wedding Lori Laviolette was the bride to Mike Jacobson. ln the second wedding Sharon Novick married Rod Wheatley. The reverend Brian Allen pre- sided over both ceremonies. The weddings were informal and the participants even wrote personal speeches to accompany the formal wedding vows. A reception follow- ing each wedding, took place in the cooking room. Ugh! Is it 6 O'Clock Already? I really-don't want to get up, get dressed, and have to face those monsters today. It's the same story every day. I try to teach them something useful, but all they are concerned with are the parties over the weekend, when tickets go on sale for the next Centrum concert, or who is going out with who. How can I compete with all that? I have to correct those tests before they get on my back. I wish that they would spend as much energy studying for the test as they do afterwards wanting to know the grade. Also I have to memorize the grade for each of my 125 students, since they will all stop me in the hall way and will want to know the grades. RRRRIIIINNNNGGGGH!! Foolish snooze alarm. must be 6: 15. Had better get up for sure. Maybe I should call in sick. It's the day before Christmas vacation and three fourths of the kids will take the day off, so why shouldn't I? IfI'm lucky I'll only have 2 or 3 students in each class. What can I do in a class with only a handful of kids? But the office wants me to work so I guess that I will have to come up with something to do. Suspect that the folks in the teacher's room will be yapping about something as usual. They'll tell the tales about what the cutest daughter in the world did yesterday. Or what the smartest son in the world thought up. Or what the students are doing in the hallways. Or what the office has just decided to do. I think I will call in sick -- I'm sick of school. I need the day off. RRRIIINNNGGG!!! What's thatl? RRRIIINNNGGG!!! Oh, The phone. Hello . . . You're Kidding! Great! Thanks! Have a great vacation. I can't believe that he called off school since we only got seven inches of snow. Oh well, back to sleep. Heh, heh, heh!!!
