To a very special woman who was brave enough to accept the challenge as our class advisor after nobody else would, we would like to say thank-you. Mrs. Janet Julian was the third teacher who attempted to organize and advise the class of 19841 thanks to her optimism, wit, and generosity our class became united and successful. By offering her experience, leadership and friendship to each member ofthe class we worked together through the laughter and the tears. Mrs. Julian cleverly helped us to discover our limititions, to develop our personalities, and to achieve goals beyond our expectations. In addition to this, Mr. Julian unseltishly donated her time to assist us with everything from car washes and bake sales to T-shirt sales and cheese and sausage fund raisers. Without her talents and organizational skills, the major events ofour senior 3 ear including class trip, class night, and graduation could have never been as memorable to us as they will be lor the rest ol' our lives. Although we may never be able to fully express our gratitude for all that Mrs. Julian has done for the Class ol'iX-11 we would like to say once again, Thanks, Mrs. J.l Z' 1' ffiff, 1 ... V ,! ' r Hi '6We've Got Stylev Throughout the four years that the Class of '84 has attended GHS. we've exhibited quite a variety of fashions. The styles of clothing have changed considerably since our Freshman year. Several of these fashion trends include the styles of the conservative preppies and the wild punks. Although many of us tespecially the girlsl have received scornful glances from certain indi- viduals. these trends have continued to change and become increasingly more strange as our high school years passed. When we were timid Freshmen. many of our classmates dressed in a preppy style with turned-up collars, kelley green trutle necks, and dock sider shoes. However. the majority of our class tired quickly of these expensive IZOD's and LLBean clothing items. and remained content with our Levis ix V11 and flannels. and skirts below the knees. As we completed our first year of high school our timidness began to wear off and the wild styles began to wear on. The girls' skirts began to shorten and the guy's sleeves were cut off. Many ofthe old fashioned dress codes were violated but even a few ofthe teachers were com- miting the violations. Hair styles changed dramatically and the accessor- ies were definitely punk. In addition to the multi-colored bandnas tied from head to toe. the styles of shoes ranged from spike heeled pumps to plain white sneakers. Along with the eccentric fashions we developed throughout our four years at Grafton High. in our Senior year we saw women wearing men's clothing and vice versa. However, the men at GHS were never as stylistically bold as the women! - IT YW 5 5 -f v .AWA Cbuiil-i 1 k .f 52 : 5 ' I if 'i 5 my i Q .K 9 2 'ik' ul 'Y -Z' . l I ft' A I . The predominant one is the means by which new songs and bands are introduced to the public. In the past the primary source was the radio. but now it is the television. MTV tMusic Televisionl, and other video programs which enable us to see and hear our favorite musicians performing in concert and enacting the meanings oftheir songs. Because of mu- sic videos. many English bands have become very popular here in the United Statesg so popular that their influence upon our culture has been called The English Invasion. Some of these invaders are Boy George twho definitely is a man. just as Mrs. Batesll and other members of Cul- ture Club. the fab tive from Birmingham - Duran Duran. the sexy Adam Ant. the wild and spike-haired Billy Idol. the famous trio The Police. the bizarre Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart who consitute the Eurythmics. MTV's all C9116 time video champions - Def Leppard. Genesis. the Fixx. and David Bowie. Other very popular foreign acts include Bryan Adams. the Rolling Stones. Yes. The Who. and Loverboy. Although there are many foreign groups which are well-liked here in the U.S.. there are also several American bands which are very popular. Provid- ing us with a variety of music. such musicians as Huey Lewis and the News. Van Halen. Journey. ZZ Top, Quiet Riot. Cyndi Lauper. and of course Michiel Jackson. have acquired nation- wide recognition. All of these musicians have contri- buted to today's culture by writing songs about life. death. war. freedom. and love which correspond to us and our personal experiences. The musical scene during our years of high school can be described in a few words: WAAF. videos. concerts. MTV. the Centrum in Worcester. and Boy George! l 2 ! . What are you doing this weekend'? . So what usually happened on these two incredibly pre- cious days of the week? If no one was willing to risk the safety of home and valuables to throw a party. the next plan ofaction would have been to check out the party spots. Soap Hill and Gumby Woods. In the rare event that these were vacant. the fun seekers might have cruised past the Mart or Xtra Mart looking for loose ends to tie up with. Hun- gry, we'd drive down Fast Food Boule- vard. or Grafton Street as it's common- ly called. Later we'd go to Worcester to a movie. The romantically inclined would then park at the Center School. Old Saw Mill Road. Willard Clock Museum. or the Mass. Pike Bridge. The unattached would wander home. Most weekends for the class of '84 were nomadic. f ia Everybody's Reflecting the state of the general econ- omy. the cost of high school usually exceeds our ready supply of cash. So where do we turn for funds? Beyond the upturned palms of mom and dad lies a myriad of available positions for those ofus ready. willing. and able to hack out a part time profession in the midst of Chemistry homework. basketball games and play rehearsal. Many find that babysitting and mowing lawns. the time-worn institutions of teenage part time employment are no longer suffi- cient. and we are forced to swell the ranks' of area businesses. J The Grafton High football team ended a disappointing season with looks of promise toward years to come. Although they ended the sea- son at 3-7. the Indians played aggressively throughout. The sea- son started off well with a 20-6 vic- tory over Oxford: however. numer- ous injuries, including a dislocated elbow to Captain Rick Garabedian. contributed to the Indians' poor record. In addition to the 25 Grafton stu- dents. there were 2 Shrewsbury stu- dents, and three chaperones all filled with anticipation. They arrived in Maine six hours later and after assigning rooms and unpacking, they explored the beautiful mountainside. They awoke early the following morning ready for a full day of skiing. The conditions were excellent and the day started off perfectly. Howev- er. all good things must come to an end, and the casualties began to occur. Within two days of skiing. the skiers managed to acquire seven stitches, a twisted knee, a broken wrist, a sprained arm, and a terribly scratched face. Although their days were filled with excitement. the nights were quite uneventful. After a day of skiing, sledding, and snowball fighting, everyone was exhausted and turned in early. By Sunday the weather had turned, and with all the injuries everyone was ready to go home. With the memories of this winter wonderland, they boarded the bus for the long journey back to Grafton. 0 .iii I 2 air aff' 1 t ff- H t '3 ' 1 i ' 'Z Q52 I' f H,-gf M. . I 'ui' ,-, y 25, 1984 QI 5 if Reflection Reflecting on four years can be made into a trite recollection of good and bad times. Writing an essay on this subject usually results in the same thing. However, taking a general viewpoint allows one to skirt around this problem as well as providing one with the chance to deliver a message. When we entered Grafton High School in 1980. Jimmy Carter was president. the price ofcrude oil was still ridiculous. our embassy was captured in Tehran. personal computers were new on the market. and the space shuttle was waiting for its first launch. Needless to say - but it will be said - we have seen some changes. Not all ofthese changes have affected us directly though. But such events as the passing of Proposition ZVQ. less Federal Government funding of public schools. and the in- stallation of new lockers did. Yet. if we were to decrease the radius ofour relections to the activities ofGrafton High students we would open the proverbial door to a more personal array of events. Recall how you felt when you first entered G.H.S in September of 1980. The upperclassmen were people that we had looked up to. or heard about. or merely been friends with. or perhaps it was our first encounter with them. But when you passed an upperelassman in the hallway you felt different. and you were always waiting for the Seniors to graduate so that you could move up a level. As the year progressed we earned some of their respect as we played sports with them. per- formed with them. and sat in class with some ofthem. and partied with them. Then. they graduated. As Sophomores we felt accustomed to the high school rhythm. Now there was a class under us and the teachers knew who we were tsome of us were known personally. others by reputationl. For some of us. our Sophomore year will be remembered as our most difficult year. For others of us. it was our easiest. In our Sophomore year we saw the advent ofdressing in costumes on Halloween. Spirit Weeks, Spring Fling. and the original Warrior Variety Show. Athletics were becoming easier as skills. forms and attitudes became more accentuated. We were veterans of mid-terms and finals. and we were ready to become Juniors. In our Junior year all non-Pre-A.P. English students were introduced to the dreaded Quarter-Course which. it should be noted. was originally designed by Attila the Hun as a training instrument for quick learning. At any rate. after having our schedules butchered we were ready to settle for anything solid. Yet another introduction for us was the double-lab period on Chemistry. This was an exception- al learning experience for those of us in Mr. Prunier's class. for it taught us that reading instructions does help. During this year we began to pull together and realize that everyone is the same. has the same doubts. fears and disappointments. It is this fact which made our class slightly more special Then we became Seniors. Senioritis struck a few of us in early September. this was quickly noticed by several teachers. For the first time in our class's history. we retained an Advisor for two consecutive years. For the sake of prosperity. may our gratitude be noted here. Mrs. Julian. we truly appreciate all of your efforts. There was one upset in our last year. Unfortunately. the Thanksgiving Day football game with West Boylston was lost. Some traditions must be broken. But with the ascension to Scniorship came many great honors: Senior Privilege. breakfast before school. Senior skip day. and understandable laziness. When the Graduation countdown in Mrs. Dadah's room dropped below twenty. l had to look back tand write thisl. Some friendships were broken. new - and good - ones made in their stead. We have all been through many disappointments and frustrations. but some barriers have been successfully demolished as well. We have seen many changes in our world. But we have also seen changes within ourselves and our peers. Some were for the better. some forthe worse. We have realifed many things about people. but remained blind to others. No criticism can be made. though. Mistakes are all part of growing up. and that was what lligh School was meant to aid us with: maturing. 'I-1 -1111:-J k .. ' I ' Q , F 1 f a iff' I Q.
