The twelve years of school have come to an end. Both feelings of joy and sadness along with fear of what the future will bring you is constantly haunting you. As you remenis on the past your last year at G.H.S. was probably the most fullfilling. It started in August of 76 when the former school committee awarded Mr. Lemay the job as principal. The Septem- ber weather was hot as the school commit- tee locked the students and faculty out of school. The teachers had no contract and the school committee decided to prevent the games that teachers played three years previous. Grafton Teachers Association battled in an all night session to reach a contract agreement but after the mist of smoke and name calling no agreement had been reached. After five days and many fruitless con- tract sessions. the school committee al- lowed the eager students and teachers to return to the classrooms. As September came to a grinding halt. still no contract agreement had been reached. But the stu- dents at G.H.S. kept their heads and par- tied to the fact that the G.H.S. Cross Country Team ended two years of frustra- tion by winning their first meet. ln November we all celebrated the Var- sity Field Hockey teams' victory to the S.W.C.L. Championship. All our girls showed Graftons finest athletic ability. In December the seniors finally gained an advisor as Mrs. Langas took on the task. We were all feeling kind of down be- cause it had seemed as if nobody wanted us. But Mrs. L. cared and we grew to love the lady. Things were really looking good as our football team scrambled for their S.W.C.L. Championship and won. Also this year the team went to the Super Bowl game at Springfield College against Mahar Regional. As the snow came down the G.H.S. team walked off the field slowly. They lost but we were still proud of them. The Christmas concert at G.H.S. proved to be a great evening for all as Mr. O., the Band. and the chorus combined their tal- ents. The music was spine tingling and set the joyous atmosphere for the season. lt was the beginning of the New Year and the Junior and Seniors Classes clashed as the Jr. - Sr. Volley Ball Marathon bounced in. The marathon lasted 15 mi- nutes short of the 12 hour time limit be- I977 In Review cause of a lack of accuracy on the part of the refs, as to the time the game was to start. The seniors were doing a fantastic job trying to ignore the refs bad calls and were down just one game when the match was said to be over. There was great dis- appointment over the refusal to let the se- niors play for the fifteen minutes they should have been allowed. As the days rolled by G.H.S. was dis- rupted by three waste days as bomb scares plagued the school. We were sent to the Middle School where teachers were told to teach us. We learned how the bicy- cle originated and when the padded seat came into being. The Seniors decided to have a dance. The students grooved to the sounds of Bit- ter Creek. It was a good dance and the only dance of the year. In March the School Committee changed the bomb scare policy: students would be evacuated, the building searched. and the students would then be able to retum to classes. Pressure from par- ents forced the School Committee to re- turn to the old policy. The next day the bomb scares started again. G.H.S. was put under maximum security as students were searched by police and hall guards, armed with paper and pens. Police made the ar- rest in the bomb threats, a nineteen year old youth from Millbury. Meanwhile on the lighter side G.H.S. hosted the monthly meeting of the Regional Advisory Council, which proved to be a constructive day. The School Committee appointed Mr. Lynch as vice principal. South Pacific, a great broadway musical was presented by a group of fine actors, all G.H.S. students, under the super direction of Mr. O., Dori Lou Beck, Mike LaFoun- taine and Bert Engvall all making their cal class proud of them. When April came around the students, do to the bomb scares at G.H.S. lost fif- teen minutes of sleep as classes started at 7:30 A.M. instead of the usual 7:45 in order to make up class time. We were still tired but we got used to it and were happy when the stereo was installed in the cafeteria as the students grooved to the tunes at open study and lunch. Complaints were made over the station played but as is always you can't please everyone all of the time so the channels were changed every once in awhile to make everyone 4 happy. Vampires struck G.H.S. as the students council sponsored its annual Red Cross blood drive. The tum out could be termed as O.K. as many students were just as scared to give their blood. Student Gov- emment day in Boston was a fine success as Kathy Glispin posed as Rep. Driscroll. In May the close of school for the Se- niors came fast as the School Committee voted to reinstate Mr. Lojko as principal and then transferred him to the central of- fice. When would a decision be made as to the outcome of the whole Lojko dispute? It was a great day as the students at G.H.S. took over the town for student government day. The Seniors voted by their class mates to participate were Marie Mondor, Kathy Glispin, Michelle Strat- ford, Karen Bibeau, Diane Dahlstrom, Michael Baillargeon, Judy Sullivan and Jim Taft. On May 13th the Sheraton Tara hosted the senior prom with the music of Sounds Unlimited. It was a fantastic night as everyone cheered the queen who was cho- sen. Congratulations to Judy Markt and her court of beautiful girls. It's June now and the Senior Class Trip is over. It was cloudy that day but the fun still lasted at Ocean Beach Park and the trip back home as Mr. Bukata and Mr. Carter got their bus singing and jumping. We had one lively time which I'm sure I'll never forget. Class Night was fun too! As students who our class felt best exemplified a super- lative were given awards. We danced to the sound of Odiepus who show promise for the future. Oh No tomorrow we graduate! The adren- alin starts to surge. And everyone is let down by the rainy weather but it tumed out to be one of the best graduations in a long time. The music by Mr. O, the band and the chorus made many students cry but thats girls for ya. We received our di- plomas then went 05 to party and what a party it was. I never saw so much hugging, kissing and farewells. It did not seem pos- sible, four years gone. For some of us a job, travel or more school lies a head, but what ever the future holds for you, the Class of 1977 has made it and will continue to do so. Congratulations and Good Luck to Mrs. Langas' Class of 77.
