After being settled in our new home, we proceeded to elect our class officers. President, John Hassen, Vice President, Beth Dame, Secretary, Judith Lundgren, and Treasurer, Anne Croteau. We were not allowed to hold a dance that year and so our main proiect was our class trip in June to Nantasket Beach, where a delightful time was had by all. Upon entering our Sophomore year, we felt a bit surer of ourselves. We elected the same officers as in our Freshman year, and began making plans for our first dance-the Sophomore Hop-which was held in the Spring. With the smell of lilacs, we enioyed our first dance in the school gym. As in our first year, our class trip was at Nantasket Beach. With two years behind us we looked forward to the last two years, which will always have the most and best memories. Our Junior year brought with it many new projects, and under the leadership of our officers, President, Muriel King, Vice President, Roberta Caravalho, Secretary, Dolores Krula, and Treasurer, Nancy Foote, we began planning for them. The first function was the Harvest Moon Hop held in the Fall, followed by the Junior Cabaret under the direction of Miss Fon- tanella, Mrs. Newey, and Mr. Mohan. This was followed by the Junior-Senior Tea, under the chairmanship of Marina Mainini, and was held in the cafeteria with refreshments and entertainment provided by the Junior Class. During the time these functions were being held another committee was working unstintingly to prepare for the biggest event of the year, the Junior Prom. It was held on a beautiful night in June surrounded by an atmosphere of the Orient and sweet music. Our Queen was Kathy McKeon with her court of six lovelies, Carol Sampson, Joan Leland, Joanne Bates, Sue Carron, Beth Dame, and Pat Wenc. The wonder and delight of that night was carried over to the class trip the next day to Nan- tasket Beach. Too soon we found ourselves beginning our final year at Grafton, with Mr. Sandberg and Mr. Doyle as class advisors. Faced with new goals, we were deter- mined and eager to do our best in all endeavors. Class elections were as follows: President, John Hassen, Vice President, Beth Dame, Secretary, Betty Benoit, and Treasurer, Nancy Foote. Our first goal was to raise money for the costs of our Year- book, which, under the direction of Kay Merrill, turned out to be a iob well done. ? l 1 - XM Our first project was the Candy Sale in the Fall, which added a good-sized sum to our bank balance. The Freshman Reception was held in the Fall at which our younger sisters and brothers became acquainted with us at a tea in the school gym, where refreshments and entertainment were provided. Soon rehearsals began for The Senior Play under the direction of Miss Fontanella and Mr. Mohan. lt included a fine cast. We held the second Senior Ball on December 28 in the gym. On the basis ot their dependability, leadership, and personality, the class elected Roberta Caravalho, Queen and John Hassen, King. The attendants were Carol Sampson, Beth Dame, and Judy Lundgren. The boys selected were Reginald lde, Donald San- derson, and Richard Howarth. We also planned a trip with Mr. Sandberg to the State House in Boston. Throughout the year all of us had anticipated the coming of the two evenings never to be forgotten-Class Night and Graduation. Thus ended our four years at Grafton. Looking back on the past years, remembering the times we have shared together, many of us regret having to leave. We are reluctant not only, or even primarily forthe fun we have had, but are ever grateful for what we have learned through studying and working with people. And so now we must leave, but in our hearts we hope those who have known us will not forget us iust as we shall always remember you and dear old Grafton. Beth Dame IL 'fd 'A -, Q au Q, f ,Q 5 . e . Did we surprise you, Miss Fontanella? Senior girls are always so busy!!! Mr. Mohan's classes are always amusing. Rock 'n' Roll Lunch Room , 611155 Prvplzccy I walked up the gangplank of the SS Graftonian, had my luggage taken care of and settled myself in a comfortable deck chair relaxing after a busy season on Broadway. As I sat back and closed my eyes I had a vision of my school days back at GHS. I knew Charlie Knowlton as a scientist, Morton Hebb, a dairy owner, and Reginald Ide, a successful farmer. Betty Benoit, Sue Carron, Carol Christian and Marilyn Francis were private secretaries. Just then the captain of the ship, Captain James Hayes, came up to me and started telling me about some of his crew. Louis Martin and Walter Lawrence were First and Second Mates under Captain Hayes. Patricia Metivier was the social direc- tor and Beverly Forsman was the ship's nurse with Dr. Richard I-lowarth in charge. What a pleasant surprise to be with old friends again. That night while dining with Jim, Pat and Bev, I experienced another surprise. On board the ship as the star vocalist for the entertainment of all, was Joanne Bates. She looked the same as I remembered with her long dark hair. Later in my state- room I was thumbing through a magazine and I noticed the editor of the magazine was none other than Frank Thomas. I always knew Frank would succeed. I also noticed a picture of a drummer who was becoming world famous for his swing- ing beat and then I recognized Bill Froment. I had to look twice to believe it. Imagine, I know someone so famous. As I turned the pages I noticed some beau- tiful pictures and the names at the bottom of the page read Sue Pond and Louisa Berube. Upon further reading I realized that the names were of two girls from my class. I went to sleep with my pleasant thoughts. While eating my breakfast the next morning I was looking through the paper and I saw a picture of John I-lassen, a distinguished lawyer in a pose with Donald Sanderson, prominent engineer. I also noticed an article of nurses graduat- ing and I found the names of Kathy McKeon, Anne Croteau, Nancy Babowitch, Judy Lundgren, and Pauline Lukas. I almost laid the paper down when a picture caught my eye. It was a picture of the teacher of the year, none other than our own Geraldine Fleming. The two runners-up were Pat Clark and Kay Merrill. Turn- ing to the sports section I found an article on basketball players and Jim Simoneau who was co-captain of the Boston Celtics. Also in the sports section I noticed where Ray Peavey and Fielden Williams were racers and were going to be contestants in the cross country race. I went out for a walk on the deck later on, and while walking I noticed a bulletin boahrd. Tacked on the board was a sign. Learn to Dance The Right Way , let our instructors John Zaleski and Patricia Wenc, graduates of Arthur Murray's dancing school, teach you the fun of dancing. I inquired further at the information booth and the clerk behind the desk was Jeanette Bonner. She told me where I could find Pat and John. I found them having a coffee break and they told me some more news of my classmates whom I had not seen for years. Don Mahoney had his own green houses and his flower business was blooming back in Grafton. His two assistants were Karen Stidsen and Gail Scobie. David Perkins and Larry Dunbar were in attendance also. There were several girls in the class who had married, Roberta Caravalho, Dolores Krula, Gail Faber, and Betty Lamson. Four of the girls from my class had become models. They were Janice Fletcher, Donna Messier, Elaine Shilinsky, and Carol Sampson, who can be seen in all the leading magazines. The two Carlsons, Elrid and Valarie, had opened a beauty salon called Carlsons' Charm Cottage. I was quite amazed when I heard thaFPeggy McAvoy was a veterinarian. Rosair Boudreau was a country and western singer, singing for the Ozark Jubilee. You can hear him almost every night on the radio. Doris Paille, Nancy Sullivan and Jeanne Girourd were running a nursery school, and doing very well. Judy Troy and Joan Quinn had become physical edu- cation teachers. Five of my classmates were public accountants throughout Grafton. They were Carol Murphy, Rose Marie Lapierre, Joan Leland, Phyllis Randall, and Rita Raymond. Saying good-bye to Pat and John, and thanking them for their heartwarming tales from Grafton of some of my classmates. I left, only to bump into Elaine Blondin, Muriel King, and Arlene Cunningham who were also enjoying the voyage. Arlene and Elaine were secretaries and Muriel was dietician in a hos- pital. I said good-bye after a brief chat, and as I was walking by the ship's audi- torium I heard the beautiful melody of an accomplished organist. Just as I hoped, it was Austin MacLaughlin. I saw Austin at dinner that evening and he told me that Cynthia Fadden was his agent and Beth Dame did all his arrangements. I com- mented on the delicious array of food before us and he told me why it looked and tasted so wonderful. The reason was that Laurent Belanger was the ship's chef, and great he was. I asked Austin why so many people from our class were with this particular ship, and he told me that in i957 when they graduated, Gordon Nichols, Marshall Temple, Bruce Newton, and Billy Tessier had gone to Texas, struck oil, and bought the SS Graftonian, and this was the answer. As you can imagine, I thoroughly enioyed the rest of the voyage on the ship. Nancee Foote FR LH RxMg J 4 VS ,,, , W X.
