Mixed Chorus CLASS MOTTO OUT OF SCHOOL LIFE, INTO LIFE'S SCHOOL Photography Club 4 I i Qu-T-i mf 'fig I g 1 A sign of old age to reminiscelu Well, it was four years ago, on a bright autumn 1 ' i m If ..,,,o. QL-5 Y 1 -.1 Q IV X day in early September, 1949, when we entered the awe-inspiring halls of Grafton High as wee Freshmen, a nervous, awkward-looking group of eighty-one. Our class had the distinction of being the last officially hazedg the upper-class men certainly gave us the works! If you should ever want to know the measurements of the Town Hall in terms of frankfurters, or how to play Romeo and jnlief, just consult us for we're authorities. Some months after this initiation, we elected Alfred Hubbard as President with jane Kelly as his help-mate. Shirley Rose set down our deeds. and Waldo Mer- riam collected the money to finance our plans. Our Freshman frolics were confined to a Christmas party and our first fun-packed trip. After cheering the Red Sox on to a thrilling victory over Chicago, a bus load of us weary youngsters arrived home just about in time to shut off our alarms. This, as Freshmen, concluded our first year at Grafton, leaving the teachers hoping that we would use our ingenuity in study rather than mischief. In the fall, joined by twenty-three new classmates from Upton, we arrived for our second year. Our competent leaders, assisted by an executive committee, were: jane Kelly, President, Patricia Mack, Vice President, Abby Warren, Secretary and Waldo Merriam, Treasurer. Now with great zeal and energy we began to plan our first school dance, the Sophomore Hop. We learned the hard way about all the little details which make or break such an event. Since the dance was to occur on a Friday, the thirteen- th, we decorated the hall with good luck omens, and they certainly worked! Our jaunt to Boston had been so much fun the year before, we decided on a return engagement, this time to see the Red Sox play the Tigers. So another eventful year ended. Back again in September we came as sophisticated juniors. The class immediately was beset by the business of choosing class rings and the problems of raising money. Anxious to do something different, we introduced a Harvest Hop into Grafton I-Iigh's social schedule, and showed it could be a smashing success. Plans for the junior Cab were already for occupancy. The two mirthful comedies, The Glam! Story, coached by Miss Noyes, and Smzmbfed Eggr, directed by Miss Droney, were presented to a record crowd and proved there was much budding dramatic talent within our ranks. The Romeos were especially noteworthy. Then came the junior Prom, the most fondly remembered night of the year. The new gym, decked with fragrant spring flowers and shimmering with silver stars, was a perfect dreamland over which Queen Patsy Mack and her charming court reigned. For a few weeks going to school was actually fun until the novelty of the new building wore off. Nothing in our new home compared, however, with such escapades as rocking the old study-hall floor. Our annual outing, held at Whalem Park, completed our junior year. jane Kelly had again led us, with john Hayes as her able Veep, and Abby Warren and Waldo Merriam had held their former offices. iiififiiitl. .lf1i5.Hit4l 1L'5?:?1?-dfQi1fX'e'1- :X nv 4 .mn-mai. 1 ....,.-. Prepared to make our Senior year the most memorable of all, we returned for the last time to dear old Grafton High. Immediately we began to work on our numerous projects to build up our Treasury for graduation and the Washington trip. One and all enjoyed our Freshman Reception, distinguished by a performance of our beautiful make pin ups, led by David Goddard as Mrs. America. We devised some original ideas for fund-raising, among them the Masquerade Ball. Realizing this was a most important year we elected jane Kelly as President, Ernest Ramsey as Vice President, Abby Warren as Secretary, Waldo Merriam as Treasurer, and Sheila Tessier as Editor-in-Chief of our Yearbook, The Compania. Mrs. Lowell, the cast, and everyone else worked hard on the production of the Senior play. At last the Big Day arrived. Our jubilant group was off to Washington! All the exciting experiences of that week would fill a book. But after returning we realized that soon we must bid boodbye to G.H.S. At Class Day we had one last item of fellowship before the sad parting of Graduation. We shall always look back on those days at Grafton High with happiness, and gratitude to all who have worked so hard to make our schooling a real stepping stone to the future. -j,,gnfl V I ab 44-L.
