The class of 1940 assembled on September 7, l959 with the full realization that we had now attained that long- awaited title of Ufull-fledged seniors.U We started the year off with a meeting on September 20, to discuss the first big social event of the year, the Freshmen Reception. Our next meeting of importance was called on September 22, to elect officers for the coming year. Final results, after a long session of counting and recounting, showed that Robert Tompkins had been elected President for a third term. Robert Boyns was chosen Vice-President, Barbara Dickson, Secretary, and George Jordan was reelected Treasurer for a second term. Our major event of the yeer was the gala premiere of 'Molly Rushes Inn, on December 8, 1959. Our Bette Davis of the Senior Class, Miss Bette Fleming, rendered a splendid H 'performance as Molly. The adonis of the Senior Class, Jack Kennedy played the part of Richard Gordon, Molly's brother- ln-law. Constance Gordon, his wife, was played by Vivien Bailey. The element of mystery was introduced by the Un- W ,known Lady and Eleanor Sherwood played by Barbara Dickson. -Randolph Page, who was eventually nconqueredu by Miss Sher- wood was portrayed by Robert Boyns. The suave Roderick 'Ward, whose noticeable attention to Molly could not possibly have been mistaken, was played by William Gillespie. The part of Larry Lane, the typical college freshmen was played naturally by dashing George Jordan. The parts of Marcella Lansing, the self-appointed invalid, played by Evelyn Allen, Sally Carlisle acted by Marguerite Sullivan, who provided the rustic atmosphere until she met her childhood lover John Shelby portrayed by Edward Bean, ware all acted exceptionally well. Nancy Rossiter, Pierre, Vivien, Vance, Rutherford Raine, and Tom Lansing were played excellently gby Clarissa Lebel, Francis Melanson, Flora Wood, William ?ong, Etta Leighton, and William Woodcome respectively. iffhe production was also assisted by Margderite Constant, fhlfmpter, and Donald Allison, Francis Ayers, and Robert V ,WHEN the .GRAFTON HIGH SCHOOL v 1 B X G' n -1. vx '-,da ' , '4,.2,1 f,STe:i.x wfffw fi Wir ff- , 4.9! Pri- maries have been held, nomination papers duly filed and now the momentous moment has arrived! We are actually voting! Hinds have been made up carefully after consideration of the divine eyes, sweet personalities, and magnificent phgsiques of.the candidates so that Richard Glispin, the hero of Nbrth Grafton becomes Presidentg Bill Schofield, the hero of the feminine world, Vice-President, and little Ruthie Hall, the darling of the whole class, Secretary-Treasurer. y W Turning our attention to class mottoes, we select one bulging with our spirit of achievement and progress, HNot at ,the Top, But ClimbinL!N We are inspired! We pounce on the 'spectrum, and it offers us class colors, maroon and gold. ,Sedate, don't you agree? Class dues are our next problem. The teachers--wc see why now!--suggest the establishment of B small fund for flowers or cards to sick members, perhaps a ness tax of five cents. We scorn such penuriousness and ,grandly pass a unanimous vote that class dues be twenty-five tents for the remainder of the year. A few weeks later a of the class is ill. Yonder is one who pays little or no attention to the rules, and ls, shall we say, a little headstrong. Over there is the studious person, we wonder if the daily dictionary has been duly digested. Really, though, the boys feel that the manly type predominates among them, and we are sure the girls agree. The girls, we understand, feel that they represent the attractive feminine world, and the boys second the motion unanimously. Springtime among the Freshmen finds our President, Richard Gllspin fvery handsome indeed and we know who elec- ted himl chatting with the Secretary Ruthie Hall, not an un- usual combination. The warm days are welcomed too by one blonde, Patty Shipman, known for her wget-em-allu ability. Do we see her casting her blue eyes toward a group made up of our glamour boy, Bill Schofield, Harry Jennings, popular with girls in upper classes, Burton Hobie, noted for his dramatic and musical ability, and Frank Mallalleu, whose red hair is the envy of all the girls, and his sunny dis- position, the envy of everyone! ,Girls gather in groups, too, and hero we find popular Rose Nolan entertaining in a sunny corner, Helen Dumas discussing baseball technique with Ellen Chamberlayne, Rita Iosciusko and Betty Cunningham cataloguing the Freshman boys, while Genevieve Kennedy and Geneva Childs forecast the coming fashions. Of course, we have our students, among them Kenny Boutiette and Kazar Kazarian working earnestly on an algebra problem. Is that William Davis lecturing on social problems again? His social problem, you know, is a very special Freshman lady. O'Leary and Kenny Belsito, together? Nothing unusual about that, the all absorbing subject of basketball. ' A large number of us form an awed circle to hear tales of Washington from the Seniors: the boat trip that disagreed with Etta Leighton and her luncheon, George Prentiss' un- fortunate appendix, the annual disappointing burlesque show, the sailor he-men, and, of course, the buildings and the people. We fervently hope that everyone realizes the appreciation of the Seniors for their chance to go, and we assure you that the Class of 1945 will be just as ap- preciative. , On the whole, we feel that we are a class with great .GRAHCN HIGH SCHOOL V . l xl: Vbvb Mu. William Gillespie ------------ --Kenneth Smith Lady Luck deserted Grafton High School in Basketball this year. Last year, favored by her smiles, we won the Blackstone Valley League Championship. This year, 1940, we were the league chumps winning three and losing eight games. Disaster struck early. Our two high scorers on last year's championship team were lost to us. Mickey Murphy was struck with appendlcitis and Butch Bertrand had become a Prodigal at Saint John's. Coach Hamel found himself with not one who had the experience of playing with last year's team. During the season our team, Captain Cormier, Pong, tO'Leary, Johnston, Perron, and Yeulenskl proved themselves fto be scrappy and courageous. Handicapped by lack of height, inexperience, and misfortune they fought on. Notable victories were: Grafton 45, Milbury 27, Grafton 58, Upton 163 and Grafton 58, Blackstone 27. Heart- breaking loses were, Shrewsbury 25, Grafton 233 and Milbury 29, Grafton 28. Our high scorers were Pong with 97 points and O'Leary with 78. Everyone applauds the teams' sports- manship and fight--disregarding the record in wins and loses. The fine record of our second team, the return of Murphy and Bertrand, and the added experience which Coach Hamel has been able to instill in thc players fwith due regard to the fact that the Northbridge Juggernaught is no longer in our league? convince us that is not a vain hope Grafton will win the championship in 1941. ffl I If I I f--. This report there fore will be like an unfinished symphony. Grafton's Baseball team started out in first, but ended in reverse. In the first game we tramp- led Blackstone in the dust to the tune of 15 to 2. We then proceeded to trounce Auburn 8 to 23 Upton 81toj5g and Shews- bury 19 to 5. Then the bubble burst. Uxbridge defeated us 14 to ll and Northbridge vanquished us l8 to 2. The team has won four and lost two games. 'Babe' Branowicki has provided our opponents with plenty of exer- cise batting 558. 'Joe' Krula is our leading hitter with an average of 565. Our pitchers are strong at bat also. Micky Murphy is batting 587 and Leo Lucier is right behind him with 385. We hope that too many games will not be rained out so that our boys can make their scores higher and their batting averages healthier. f f , f ' V gli' T,. W if SPIRIT or cooPERAT1oN The 1939-1940 athletic program at Grafton High School includes seasonal lnterschool activities in football, basket ball, and baseball, The opportunity to participate in any or all of these sports is the privilege of every boy in the achool. We do not expect to meet with equal success every year, because graduation takes some of our finest players, while others have to drop out because of illness, transfer- ring to other schools, and so on. However, this past year we have been most fortunate in that an exceptionally large number have come out for the various sports, and most of these will be returning next year. The experience they have had should prove most valuable and several of these boys will be real assets to next year's teams. GRAFTON HIGH SCHOOL v . . . EDEN p.m u.a... -fmdi..-. , . What we need, more than anything else, is not necessarily the set plays that time and practice perfect, but the de- velopment of a sense of individual responsibility in each player, and group responsibility throughout the squad. Team work is the only way to success, and petty jealousies, un- willingness to accept decisions, criticisms or suggestions inevitably ruin the morale of a team and spell defeat. If every player will keep foremost in his mind this idea of individual responsibility' Grafton High School will have reason indeed to be proud of the teams we send out to rep- resent it. ' SPOTLIGHT 1740 o In an Academy Award we held at the first meeting, Bette Dayls and Spencer- Tracy were the winners of the nOsenr:U. Baby Sandy and Mickey Rooney were our favorite Juvenile nc- ters. Our next meeting fell on April lst. The committee of the club officers presented a one-not play entitled NSpar- kian. Orrin played by Billy Schofield went a Nepnrkinn Lsssie played by 'Genna' Kennedy. Susrn, whose part wrs taken by 'Gen' McCarthy, and Granny, played by Burton Hobie, did their best to help them, Orrie had many mishaps and the comical doings of Granny furnished many laughable moments in the Dlay. On the following meeting n play called 'Knives From Syrian was put on by the committee. Mrs. Buster, WEll1en Chamberlayne, wanted her daughter, Rhodle, played by Maureen Smith, to marry Charlie, the hired man, enacted by Burton Hobie. However, Rhodle loved the Syrian Peddler, Jerry Smith. Everything turned out all right in the end with Rhedie marrying the peddler. At our lest meeting June 3rd, the charter for our club was reed. Meetings wi l be held on the first Monday of every month and the club will llmlt its members to 30 n year. Dues will be 50 cents annually. The entertainment was a fest-moving comedy entitled, 'Madness In Triple T1me'. The Brendle triplets, Joanne, Judy, and Gerry, played by Helen Dumas, Pot Shipman, and Genevieve Kennedy, had acting ambitions. Their Joy was complete when they prepared for a visit from the great motion picture producer, Ernesto De Veros, played by Frank Mallelieu. However, they m xed him up with a salesman named Joe, Billy Davis, until Judy straightened things out. Mama recognized De Veros as her one-time leading man, Bennie Benson, and Joe was given the hero's role in De Veros's forthcoming production. We hope that next year will be as successful as this YBQTA Genevieve Kennedy GRAFTON HIGH SCHOOL I b 1 H 11' .92 ' 5, .1 ,A u 5' 1 .I sum 41 ' n- I U If -- , ,-1n b 'l'u,- .. .N ,NF 180 . i '1 1 4 ' f' 'f'1'r:'., -us.. We're off on our Washington trip. The long awaited moment has arrived. Bill Gillespie has already taken command. His faithful crew were seen leaning over the rail, ever on the alert, far into the night. Teddy Lysik and Irene Banas were commended for their extreme watchfulness. After a hearty breakfast of bacon and scrambled eggs, the class' got a good view of New York on a foggy morning. Arrived at Pennsylvania Station, Bob Weymouth, Don Allison, and Gordon Troy, the three gallant gentlemen of the Senior Class, were seen occupied in the task of carrying Uxbridge bags. IGHT W4 0 , Sunday morning we sat down to an appetizing breakfast of bacon and scrambled eggs. On the way to church, Smith, Jordan, and Prentice lost a hat. It cost them Q1 to get it back. Ducky wanted to say it cost them 92, but Matt said Q1 would be stretching it far enough. At Mount Vernon four Grafton High girls were seen to stand in line for two hours waiting to go through the house. We could say something about this, but we won't. In the evening everyone spent an enjoyable three hours at the Congressional Library. At ll:3O, everyone attended the socialite wedding of J. Adington Baker and Kiss Shorty Eccleston. This happy ceremony was performed on the capital steps by the very Rev. Ducly Jordan. Tompkins and Radzik went into conference with Mayor Fitzgerald of South River. we had an enjoyable breakfast of bacon and scrambled eggs. The boys are very sad today. Mayor Fitzgerald of South River has cut his intended three weeks stay at the Hotel Continental to two days. His Honor was heard to mumble -xenLtfing' about Wbean eatersn to the doorman as he left. The girls must have been fighting. Anyway Narion Hill was locked in her room by Carol Chanberlayne. She had to be rescued by a gallant bellboy. ' With longing eyes the class watched part of the ,16,500,000 that is printed every day roll through the presses at the Bureau of Printing and Engraving. As the president was speaking at the Pan American Union, the class breezed up the Washington Vonument. The monument, 555 ft. e inches high, is built partly of Massachusetts marble and pwrtly of Tennescc Granite, and has a high water mark, about lOOift. up, from the great flood of 1871. -In the afternoon we made a short stop at the Rock Creek Park. This is one of the two largest zoos in the country. Thirty minutes is entirely too short a time te see it all. Almost everyone agreed that the monkeys were about the most interesting people in Washington. Marguerite Constant was heard to remark, nGee, they have those Juniors back at Grafton High all beat.n We then viewed, in the rain, the Tamb of thc Unknown Soldier,-and the Lee Mansion. We paused briefly at the Lincoln Vemorial, one of the most beautiful buildings in Washington. So o of the class tried out Waehington's nite life while others engaged in the more strenuous pastime of roller Skating. Etta Leighton and Annie NacDougall fought over B nny t o Sa a swe t . d o bed. A selitary member of Local Union No. 19 is still picketing the hotel. Walked to Capitol and had our pictures taken. Went on comprehensive tour of the Capitol. Congress was not in session while we were in the building but someone called to mind the story of the dcsrman who warned elderly ladies not to go into the Senate Room because it sounded nlike a damned Kindergartenn. And did you know that the Capitol cost only two-thirds as much as one af Uncle Sam's battleships. We spent the afternoon rather religiously, visiting the Washington Cathedral, the Cathedral at Georgetown University and the Franciscan Monastery. These are imposing structures although the first two are not yet completed. That evening found most of us either at the Chevy Chase Ice Palace or roller skating. Etta Leighton and Annie MacDougall centinued the fight ever Benny the Sailor. The Chevy Chase Ice Palace is nice, but it surely eats up money. Reliable lnfrrmatirn has it thft Mimi Blladeau, a flawless skater at home, had to be picked up off the ice by one of the'handsome rttendants. We ate a delightful brerkfast of eggs and scrambled bacon. We visited Museums, rncther case when time 1sn't half long enough. Evie Allen is still wondering why the guard was angry when she asked if he killed and stuffed all the animals himself. With some misgiving we visited one of the most interesting buildings in Washingtcn, the F. B. I. Bob Weymouth was heard to murmur, nwell, if Bill Pong and Joe Mercik can get through without getting caught, why eheuld I worry?N Arrived at Annapolis. After visiting the historical old capitol, we watched the mi shlpmen on parade. Bill Gillespie, Katt Smith, and Eddie Bean came to the conclusion they could march almost as well rs the Boy Scouts. Well, our last night ln Washingtenl The night of the class party! Benny the Sailor compromised and took out both Etta Leighton and Annie MacDougall. Everyone went to bed early.
