SPEECH CONTESTANTS The speech departmant of Grafton High School entered contestants in seven fields at county contest. Those giving humorous declamations were Elma Bork, Faye Elliott and Arlys Tesch. Presenting dramatic declamations were Darlene Wahl, Sharon Walk, and Barbara Kulik. Phyllis Pagel, Sharon Simpson, and Betty Walk gave oratorical declamations. Entered in the interpretative reading compe- tition were Sondra Miller, Barbara Kuehn, and Georgi Kulik. Jerry Hackbart, Roger Wahl, and Eileen Combs presented original orations. Participating in radio speak- ing were Allen Krueger and Sharon Dalluge. Following the contest the speech department presented a program to the com- munity to show the various types of speech activities. Six high school students participated in the one-act comedy “Antic Spring” which was entered in county preliminary speech contest. The play opens with these young people riding in a car on their way to a picnic. There is Ginger, (Barbara Kulik) earnest and overbearingly sunny; Robert, (Roger Wahl) the sensitive one; Blossom, (Barbara Kuehn) the perpetually exuberant and idiotic teenager; Sam, (Donald Urbatsch) and Gwendolyn, (Darlene Wahl) the lovers who live a life of an adolescent violence ranging from rage to young soulfulness; and Elbert, (Wes Combs) the little brother looks on with noisy criticism at their actions and always wants to eat. An outstanding feature of the play was that no props were used other than the six chairs to represent the car in which the teenagers were riding.

Anne played by Judy ftovak was the oldest; Sharon Whlk portrayed Ern- estine, next in lire after Anne; next was Martha, played by Janet ..tide. The three girls were very much interested in boys and struggled with problems brougnt on by this inter- est. Frank, acted by Mar- lin Weieneth, was the old- est of tbe boys. The five inquisitive younger child- ren were Bill, Lillian, Fred, Dan, and Jackie, characterized by Jack iay, Faye Elliott, Larry Carl- son, Richard Bork, and H oudy Novak salutatorian. Tbe class colors are red ana white; flower is the red rose; and the mot- to is Life Lies Before Us. The eleven members who compose the class are Thomas Beck, Lavonne 3erd- ing. THE SENIOR CLASS PLAY Cheaper by the Dozen was presented by the senior class in May of 1958. The Gil- breth family, consisting of Mr. and Mrs. Gil- breth and their twelve children are the chief characters in the play. Father Gilbreth is an efficiency expert who devotes his time to eliminating waste motions, and getting his children through school. His daughters upon entering high school are becoming interested in boys and this along with the other problems of a family make a very delightful play. The cast consisted chiefly of Mr. and Mrs. Dolson and their daughter, Hilde- garde whose one major problem was finding a date for the prom. Mother comes to the rescue by calling an old school friend whose son is the same age as her daughter. Thus Hildegarde finds herself going to the dance with the only boy in school who wears knickers.
