MANLY STATE BANK St. Ansgar, Iowa Manly, Iowa SPEECH CONTESTANTS The speech departmant of Grafton High School entered contestants in seven fields at county contest. Those giving humorous declamations were Elma Bork, Faye Elliott and Arlys Tesch. Presenting dramatic declamations were Darlene Wahl, Sharon Walk, and Barbara Kulik. Phyllis Pagel, Sharon Simpson, and Betty Walk gave oratorical declamations. Entered in the interpretative reading compe- tition were Sondra Miller, Barbara Kuehn, and Georgi Kulik. Jerry Hackbart, Roger Wahl, and Eileen Combs presented original orations. Participating in radio speak- ing were Allen Krueger and Sharon Dalluge. Following the contest the speech department presented a program to the com- munity to show the various types of speech activities. Six high school students participated in the one-act comedy “Antic Spring” which was entered in county preliminary speech contest. The play opens with these young people riding in a car on their way to a picnic. There is Ginger, (Barbara Kulik) earnest and overbearingly sunny; Robert, (Roger Wahl) the sensitive one; Blossom, (Barbara Kuehn) the perpetually exuberant and idiotic teenager; Sam, (Donald Urbatsch) and Gwendolyn, (Darlene Wahl) the lovers who live a life of an adolescent violence ranging from rage to young soulfulness; and Elbert, (Wes Combs) the little brother looks on with noisy criticism at their actions and always wants to eat. An outstanding feature of the play was that no props were used other than the six chairs to represent the car in which the teenagers were riding. THE SENIOR CLASS PLAY Cheaper by the Dozen was presented by the senior class in May of 1958. The Gil- breth family, consisting of Mr. and Mrs. Gil- breth and their twelve children are the chief characters in the play. Father Gilbreth is an efficiency expert who devotes his time to eliminating waste motions, and getting his children through school. His daughters upon entering high school are becoming interested in boys and this along with the other problems of a family make a very delightful play. The cast consisted chiefly of Mr. and Mrs. Dolson and their daughter, Hilde- garde whose one major problem was finding a date for the prom. Mother comes to the rescue by calling an old school friend whose son is the same age as her daughter. Thus Hildegarde finds herself going to the dance with the only boy in school who wears knickers. GRAVERSON HARDWARE Plymouth, Iowa STANDARD OIL WALTER WAGNER Grafton, Iowa Grafton, Iowa HUGO BOESET Grafton, Iowa CLASS HISTORY Only three students of the 1958 graduating class are remaining from the group that started first grade in 1946. These people are Darlene Wahl, Roger Wahl, and Janice Hackbart. From the first through the twelfth grade the class has been welcoming new members and waving good-bye to old ones. They entered each new grade with the anticipation that comes in meeting new teachers and gain- ing new experiences, and left each, class feeling some regret at the fond memories being left behind. Thus the class progressed finally entering the eighth grade -- which was included in high school. Two people were added to the class: Donald Urbatsch and Janet Wilde. The students at this time were Gretchen Seegers, Virginia Whited, Janet Wilde, Roger Wahl, Darlene Wahl, Janice Hackbart, Donald Urbatsch, Roger Bartz, Robert Corporon, Lois Gates and Raymond Braun. In the freshman year Judy Novak moved from Mitchell to Grafton; Marlin Weieneth and Lavonne Berding came in from country school; and Judy Guttentag transferred from New York. The sophomore year found the 1958 graduates in the middle of their high school career. Such courses as biology, algebra, typing, English and history had been left behind or were being taken, and the students were enjoying such extracurricular activities as band, vocal music, speech, athletics and etc. After becoming juniors the class lost their long-time school mate, Virginia Whited, when she moved to Washington with her parents. But to supplement for this loss Thomas Beck came into the class from Kensett, and John May also joined. Near the close of the junior year Dale Ruiter moved to Grafton from Me- servy and became a member. This was the largest the group has ever been at one time. As the last year of school rolled around Gretchen Seegers and Judy Gut- tentag moved away. Roger Bartz also left the class. This shifted the number to six boys and five girls and brings us up to the present time where we see eleven students leaving Grafton High School as another step forward in the life that lies before them. The senior class wish to thank the school, the church, and the community for the guidance and help they have received throughout the years.
