1 i--' jk$M y : 'i J '± - v We, the Senior Class of 1956, wish to dedicate this annual to the community in which we live. The people in this community have not only supported us in all our activities, but we feel they have trusted and respected us. It was through their trust and respect that we gained the courage to do the right thing in every situation with which we were con- fronted. Grafton High School boasts its Music Department under the direction of Mr. Roy Bitzer and strongly backed by the Music Mothers Club. This department consists of a high school girls glee club, small vocal groups, high school concert and marching bands, junior high band, junior high mixed chorus, and music training for the grade school children. The activities of these groups have been numerous during 1956. The band had two exchange concerts this year. One was with Carpenter school band in November. The other concert was held in March at the Plymouth High School. These schools returned the concerts usually within a few days. The concerts provided a source of practice for public appearances as well as a chance for neighborhood schools to come in close contact with each other. In December, two operettas, “The Christmas Wish” and “Tale of the Toys,” were given by the junior high and grade students. The operettas were done in full costume for the public. “The Christmas Wish” even had a pit orchestra composed of high school band members. Both operettas proved to be successful. The high light of the music department for the year, aside from the many concerts and public appearances, too numerous to mention, were the two music contests which are on a state level. The first contest, that for solos and small groups, was held in Plymouth, Iowa on April 15, 1956. At this contest, Gretchen Seegers received a I rating with her saxophone solo; the girls vocal trio received all rating; Rose Marie Walk a rating II with her piano solo; II rating to Gwen Seegers for her vocal solo; and the sextet received a III rating. The second contest for bands and vocal groups was held at Klemme, Iowa on May 5, 1956. The Grafton band and glee club each received a II rating. This is the first time in many years that both groups have received such a high rating. A full summer schedule was planned for the band. A Memorial Day program for May 30; Viking Day Parade in Northwood on June 8; Tag Day concert, June 9; Band Festival, June 12; and Osage Centennial Parade on June 23. Music, a creative art! Of G. H. S., it HAS been a part! SicuuL (Sueetv Miss Gwen Seegers, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. A. J. Seegers, was selected by the Grafton High School band to represent Grafton in the North Iowa Band Festival in Mason City on June 12. During high school, Gwen has taken part in many activities and has been recognized for her qualities of leadership. She played basketball for four years, sang in trio, sextet, and glee club, and has played first clarinet in the band for a number of years. She was editor of the school paper, president of her class and the student council during her senior year. Gwen was valedictorian of her class and received the citizenship award. She is a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church and is active in church work. 3tcLpj L Sia$ Editor..................... Assistant Editor........... Business Manager........... It was a display of beauty beyond imagination. The theme chosen for the banquet by the Juniors was “April Showers.” The area in which the banquet took place was separated from the rest of the gym by a circular stone wall. This wall was decorated with spring flowers. The banquet area was covered by a huge umbrella. This umbrella was de- corated with rows and rows of pastel colored crepe paper. The entrance to the area in which the banquet was held was a bridge which was decorated with many different kinds of flowers. After crossing the bridge, the sight before one’s eyes was truly beautiful. A slowly revolving garden formed this sight which was the center of interest. Pretty spring flowers were planted in this garden, on which a spotlight shone throughout the evening. Standing by the side of the garden was a mannequin. She was attired in an aqua formal with pink accessories. She carried a beautiful umbrella. The tables were placed in a circle in the banquet area. Beside each stood a lamp post decorated with roses. These lamp posts provided the light- ing for the area. Arranging the tables in this way made it easy for everyone to see the decorations as well as the program which took place after the meal. The table decorations were made up of little story book dolls and each carried an umbrella. Spring flowers were also placed on the table. A delicious meal was prepared by the mothers of the Juniors. The meal was as follows: APPETIZER -- grape juice and lime sherbet and a ritz cracker; MAIN COURSE -- mashed potatoes, gravy, swiss steak, buttered peas, cranberry salad, cloverleaf rolls, rosebud radishes; DESSERT-- angel food cake with whipped cream and strawberries, coffee, and milk. The Sopho- more girls served as waitresses. They wore spring dresses and a tiara of flower buds in their hair. The program which followed the meal was “short and sweet.” Lee Allen White served as master of ceremonies. Awelcome was given by the president of the Junior Class who is James Smith. This was followed by a thank you to the Juniors given by Gwen Seegers, president of the Senior Class. Deanna Kruger and Marlys Krueger sang the theme song, “April Showers.” The history of “April Showers” was given by Judy Schmidt. Rose Marie Walk then entertained everyone with a beautiful piano solo. Her selection was “Let a Smile Be Your Umbrella.” The program was closed by a short talk by Mr. Christianson. A word of thanks is extended to the Juniors for providing a lovely evening to all who attended the banquet. Minneapolis was the city of real excitement for the Seniors this year, for it was here that they spent their skip day. They left on April 6 and returned on April 8. On the way to Minneapolis, they stopped in many places of interest. Their first stop was the Josten Ring Company in Owatonna. Here they saw rings designed and made. After touring the ring company, they visited Josten’s Arabian Horse Farm. Following this visit they were served lunch in the cafeteria at the ring company. In the afternoon they continued to Fairbault where they stopped at the school for the blind and the state hospital for the mentally retarded. They arrived in Minneapolis on Friday evening and attended the Ice Follies. Saturday morning a tour was made through the Artificial Limb Com- pany. The evening was spent at the Cinerama Holiday. Sunday morning they attended church, visited the airport and Minnehaha Falls. They returned home on Sunday afternoon. A good time was had by all and will be long remembered by the Senior Class of 1956. SiaecaCawteate Sunday, May 13, 1956 Processional . . At the Drake Play Festival, the Grafton production was awarded a superior rating. Also, two members of the cast, Gwen Seegers and Darlene Wahl, received Honorable Mention Certificates for superior acting. The cast for the play was crippled on the day before departure for Des Moines, when Deanna Kruger, a member of the cast was stricken with tonsilitis and confined to her home. Janice Hartwig, one of the stars of the Senior Class Play, was entered into the cast and accompanied the group to Des Moines. Miss Hartwig was cited in a special re- commendation by the judge critic, the head of the drama department from the University of Nebraska, for her excellent contribution to the play. She played the role of Nora in the play concerned with the Irish Sea people, with a script in her hand. This is the first time in the dramatics history of Grafton High School that a play has ever received a superior rating in a contest. The girls who had received letters in previous years and returned to the team this year were: Gwen Seegers, Ruth Buechele, Janice Wahl, Maxine Trettin, Rose Marie Walk, Sondra WJiller, Virginia Whited, and Darlene Wahl. With Mr. W. C. Reger as their coach, the girls had a very successful season. They won the conference for the second year in a row having a conference record of 16 - 0. They were also Worth County Champs for the second year in a row. Going on to the Sectional tournament, they claimed the championship title, this also being the second year in a row for them. They entered the District tournament with all hope of winning it for another year. They succeeded and won themselves a very deserving berth in the State Tournament. In the first meet at the State Tournament, they met Royal the team who had beaten them in the State meet in the previous year. They were victorious over this very fine team. The next team they met was Blakesburg who they also defeated. Their next opponent was Maynard, who they had gained a victory from during the basketball season. The girls lost this game in the closing seconds of the game. However, they did return home with the fourth place trophy. The girls were backed by many friends including KGLO and KGLO-TV. Upon re- turning home from Des Moines they were met by a caravan of 125 cars. When they got back to the school, they were greeted by their loyal supporters. The other team members were Dick Trettin, Gene Urbatsch, Richard Bork, Don Urbatsch, David Wahl, James Urbatsch, Roger Wahl, Dale Bublitz, and Leslie Schmidt. Besides winning the conference, they won second place in the county tournament, being beaten out by the very fine Northwood team in the finals. They were beaten out in the sectional by Fertile, who is always a good tournament team. They had very good height this year with the first team averaging just over 6’ 1”, and they were not out-rebounded in a single game. Three boys were placed on the all conference team, which is picked by the coaches from all of the schools in our conference. Jerry Buechele was placed on the first team, Larry Dalluge on the second team, and Dick Dalluge on the third team.
