The first important addition to the class came on September 4, i949, when Keith A Bork MOVED UP FROM THE SECOND GRADE. ON NOVEMBER FOURTH OF THE SAME YEAR, LOWELL SCHULTZ MOVED IN FROM THE FARM TO ADD HIS NOBLE PRESENCE TO THE ROSTER. No FURTHER NOTABLE CHANGES OC- CURRED UNTIL THE APPEARANCE OF MAXINE MARIE NlTCHER, ON THE FIRST OF SEPTEMBER IN THE YEAR OF FOURTY-ONE. THESE THREE, TOGETHER WITH THE THREE ORIGINALS (JACK KuEHN, WILLIAM Nack, Marcella Krueger) finished out the GRADES TOGETHER. WHEN THEY RETURNED ON SEP- TEMBER THIRD, NINETEEN FOURTY-FIVE, TO COM- MENCE THE FOUR YEAR TREK THROUGH THE RUGGED WILDERNESS OF HIGHER LEARNING, THEY WERE HAP- PY TO WELCOME SHIRLEY MaY, MARY LlFKA, Dorothy Deidrich and Vivian Miller, four GIRLS FROM THE COUNTRY, TO THE CLASS. Vivian Miller was the first to drop by the WAYSiDE WHEN SHE THREW IN HER LOT WITH THE Mason City Institute of Tutorage after only EIGHTEEN WEEKS WITH US. Although the terrain was becoming increasing- ly ROUGHER, AND GREATER HARDSHIPS WERE TO BE ENDURED, SOMEHOW NO ONE GAVE UP DURING THE SECOND YEAR OF OUR TREK. Our ranks were depleted for the second time WHEN, AT THE BEGINNING OF THE THIRD YEAR, Dorothy Diedrich decided to turn about and RETURN HOME. ALTHOUGH SADDENED BY HER DE- PARTURE, THE SURVIVORS STRUGGLED VALIANTLY ON THROUGH ANOTHER YEAR. Mary Lifka and Marcella Krueger, however, came TO THE CONCLUSION THAT THREE YEARS WERE ENOUGH AND RETIRED TO THE REAR - MARCELLA TO A LIFE OF WEDDED BLISS, WHILE MARY MADE THE LONG TRIP HOME . Undaunted by hardships, and the leaving of some OF THE:R CLASS MATES, SHIRLEY ANN MAY, MAXINE Nitcher, Keith A Bork, William Nack, Lowell Schultz and Jack Kuehn had run the race and CROSSED THE FINISH LINE. SENIOR CLASS WILL We the senior class of i 949 being of sound MIND AND BODY DO BEQUEATH TO YOU ' THE UNDER CLASSMEN OF GRAFTON N I GH SCHOOL THE FOLLOWING — I, Keith A Bork bequeath and leave to Ellsworth Greiner two empty beer cans, and my ability to be prompt to Connie Buehler, I, Shirley May, will my bashfulness to Harriet Christians, and any other good qual- ities I may have, to any one who may need them, I, Maxine Nitcher will my bookkeeping- grades to Tom Wagner, my quietness to Mary Ann Rodemaker and my Basketball ability to Mary Ann Navratil o I, William Nack bequeath my ambition to WORK HARD TO TOMMY WAGNER, AND MY ARGUING IN CLASS ABILITY TO EARL BaCKHAUS, I, Ole Schultz leave my mechanical genius to Lois Kuntz, my camels to Paul Dalluge and my Ford (Love Buggy) to anyone that can find a BETTER USE FOR IT THAN ! CAN, I, Jack Kuehn being of sound mind and body BEQUEATH NOTHING TO NOBODY. I AM GOING TO KEEP WHAT I GOT. To the Juniors we will our Senior Class PRIVILEGES AND ASK THEM TO TREAT THEM WITH CARE. PREDICTIONS OF THINGS TO COME These predictions in the past have proved EIGHTY NINE PER CENT CORRECT SO DO NOT REGARD THEM LIGHTLY. January 5, i955„ ! predict Keith A. Bork AFTER LEAVING THE MlLWAULKEE WILL GO TO WORK for the Rock Island. Keep you eye on him for HE WILL ACCOMPLISH GREAT THINGS. February --i956. I predict that Shirley Ann May will achieve great success in her TEACHING OF MODERN ART AT THE STATE TEACHERS College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. June 4, 1999. I predict the Golden Weding Anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Kruger will BE A HILIGHT OF THE GRAFTON SOCIAL SEASON. ALL friends and acquaintances will remember Mrs. E. A. Kruger as the former Maxine Nitcher. December 3i, i96 i . I predict that Willi am Nack will achieve great success as a deep — FREEZE SALES MAN IN S|BER!A. April |4-S ;954. I predict Ole Schultz WILL RECOVER FROM INJURIES RECEIVED BY WRAPING HIS CUSTOM BUILT CADILAC AROUND A BIG TREE IN St. Ansgar. February t6, i957. I predict John A.Kuehn WILL BE APPOINTED BY THE GOVERNOR, THE CHAIR MANSHIP OF THE COMMITTEE ON DEEP SEA NAVIGATIN for the State of Kansas. JUNIOR CLASS HISTORY The Junior Class began its Freshman year CONSISTING OF SEVEN MEMBERS,, BONNIE BA RTZ LEFT US TO HELP ON THE FARM, IN THE FALL Bonnie became the wife of Elmer Schultz. Carl and Max Love entered this High School with THE INTENTION OF PLAYING FOOTBALL BUT WERE GREATLY DISAPPOINTED. THEY DEPARTED AFTER A YEAR AND A HALF FOR VENTURA, WHERE THEIR AMBITION FOR FOOTBALL WAS FINALLY FULFILLED. Sigrid Becker better known as Sigi departed FROM THE CLASS EARLY THIS SUMMER. HER Artistic Drawings are greatly missed. Uralee Walk decided to leave us and finish her High School career in the neighboring school of Manly. She seems to be doing very well. The two remaining Juniors are Elaine Bublitz and Mary Ann Navratil who both reside on farms. Elaine Bublitz certainly hates to move NORTHWEST OF TOWN. I SEE WHERE THE TELEGRAPH SYSTEM WILL HAVE A WORKOUT, ESPECIALLY UNTIL That Certain Party of Her's gets his new Chevey . But Congratulations to the 35 it SURE IS DOING a SWELL JOB. Mary Ann Navratil whose Main Ambition is to become a nurse. I wonder if it is the white uniforms or all the babies she sees. Her sister said she has other interests which ARE IN THE GARAGE AND NOT THE MONKEY Wrenche’s either. More power to you Neve . Mary Ann is doing an excellent job as a FORWARD ON THE GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM AN 0 Elaine is trying to prove herself worthy of the position on the opposite end of the FLOOR . SOPHOMORE HISTORY We the Flying Freshman boarded our education PLANE IN I 947 WITH TEN PASSENGERS, MRS. COTA was Pilot and Miss Bixler as Co-Pilot, During this time Vivian Horton one of the passengers bailed out over Foest City, This is our second year of traveling and we are now the Flying Sophomores , Mrs, Miller is our Pilot, Mrs, Cota our Co-Pilot and Mr, Plopper our Navigator, The passenger sitting in the front seat is Phyllis Trettin who has finally gotten her braces off her teeth, A certain neighbor boy is getting mighty interested now. Although Phyllis doesn't go out for sports, she does PLAY IN BAND AND IS VERY ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT PLAYING HER CLARINET, Sitting across from her is Betty Lifka who PLAYS GUARD ON THE BASKETBALL TEAM, WE ARE SCHEDULED TO LAND AT STACYVILLE WHERE BETTY PLANS TO GET OFF. Back of Betty is Lucille Schultz, Better known as Lucie . Since she doesn't take up basket- ball OR BAND HER MAIN INTEREST IS BOYSll LUCIE SEEMS TO ENJOY VISITING HER SISTER IN MASON City. We wonder if it's really her sister she GOES TO SEE. HOW ABOUT THAT LUCILLE? Across from Lucie is Mardell May v ho plays the CLARINET IN BAND. SHE SAY'S SHE ENJOYS PLAYING BUT SHE IS GLAD ENOUGH WHEN SHE FORGETS AND LEAVES HER INSTRUMENT AT HOME. MARDELL'S MA | N INTEREST IS HER STUDIES, WHICH IS SO UNLIKE THE REST OF THE CLASS. Seated behind Mardell is Ramona Nack who plays FORWARD ON THE BASKETBALL TEAM AND SHE IS ALSO QU I TE FORWARD IN A HANDSOME FELLOW'S MIND. She plays in the band and says she doesn't LIKE IT BUT OF COURSE WE ALL KNOW THAT ISNT SO. Behind Ramona is Harriet Christians who plays BOTH FORWARD AND GUARD ON THE BASKETBALL TEAM. She used to play in band, but had to give it UP BECAUSE LETTER WRITING TOOK UP ALL HER TIME AND NATURALLY SHE COULDN’T GIVE UP THE LATTER, WHEN BOYS ARE HER MAIN INTEREST’ Behind Harriet is Richard Kuehn, woops our MISTAKE, HE IS KNOWN ONLY AS 0|CK. He IS OUR Tommy Dorsey in the Band and he really gives THAT TROMBONE A WORKOUT. He'PLAYS FORWARD ON THE TEAM BUT HE WISHES HE COULD BE 'MORE FORWARD WITH ALL THE Gl RL S. Next is Phyllis Boeset, and her main interests ARE THE THREE B'S, BASKETBALL, BAND AND BOY'S. She has become quite friendly with Lois Kuntz. We wonder if it's Lois or a certain brother- she is interested in. Naturally we think it's the Brother. Seated across from Phyllis is Elsworth Griener BETTER KNOWN AS Buo - «? THE ' STAR OF THE BASKETBALL TEAM. DURING ENGLISH CLASS BUD ALWAYS GETS A COUGHING SPELL AND THEN HAS AN EXCUSE FOR LEAVING THE ROOM ALTHOUGH MRS. Miller doesn't catch on. We fellow students THINK IT'S BECAUSE HE DOESN'T LIKE TO READ Literature, especially Caeser. He plans on LEAVING OUR PLANE WHEN WE STOP AT MONA IN THE SPRING. FRESHMAN CLASS HISTORY The beginning of September, i948, found TWELVE OF US, ONE DOZEN FRESHMEN, STARTING ON THE FOUR YEAR SPAN OF HIGHER EDUCATION. THE FOLLOWING WILL INTORDUCE US TO YOU AS WE SIT IN OUR RESPECTIVE PLACES. FIRST WE FIND LOIS KUNTZ, WHO MAY NEVER BECOME THE WIFE OF CONNIE BuEHLER, the boy who sits on one side of her, BUT SHE STILL HAS A LOT OF FUN WHISPERING TO HIM. She also manages to keep up conversation WITH HER NOBLE FRIEND, BETTY BaRTZ. BEHIND Lois, we have Tom Wagner who says he doesn't HAVE ANY GIRL FRIENDS, BUT SURELY KEEPS- COMPANY WITH THEM ENOUGH. ONE OF HIS GREATEST AMBITIONS IS TO BE A BASKETBALL STAR. NEXT IN LINE IS THAT PRETTY DELORES HuEBNER, WHO IS“ KEPT BUSY KEEPING HER NUMBER OF ADMIRERS DOWN TO TWO OR THREE. SHE IS QUITE A BRAIN, AND ALSO IN ATHLETICS. MARILYN HaNNAMAN, WHO OCCUPIES THE SEAT BEHIND DELORES, HAS FOUND ENOUGH INTERESTS IN GRAFTON TO KEEP HER ON THE GO FOR QUITE A WHILE. NUMBER ONE ON THE LIST IS A CERTAIN WARTBURG COLLEGE STUDENT, NOT MENTIONING NAMES. NEXT IS LARL BaCKHAUSWHO IS VERY ATHLETIC MINDED DOES EXCEPTIONALLY WELL IN BASEBALL AND BASKETBALL. EARL IS FOLLOWED BY PAUL DaLLUGE WHO ISN'T VERY INTERESTED IN GIRLS, GOOD FOR YOU PAUL . HE LIKES BASEBALL ABOUT AS WELL AS ANYTHING. ORLAND BaRZ DECIDED HE COULD DO MORE GOOD ON THE FARM, SO AFTER THE FIRST WEEKS WE BECAME A GROUP OF ELEVEN. DALE TRETTIN, ONE OF DEE'S ADMIRER'S USES MOST CHANCES TO--SHALL WE SAY- LET HER KNOW ABOUT IT. OnE OF DALE'S FINEST — POINTS IS THE FACT THAT HE IS A VERY BUSY student.(Busy at what?) At the head of the row IN THE NEXT LINE IS BeTTY BaRTZ, A RATHER SHY 8UT VERY PRETTY GIRL. She has her best times in English class when she and Lois hash over world affairs.(Small WORLD ISN’T IT?) BEHIND BETTY SITS A VERY humerous individual,Mary Ann Rodemaker. If she ISN’T ALUGHING, YOU WILL FIND HER MAKING EYES AT A TALL GOOD LOOKING EIGHTH GRADE BOY, WHO INCIDENTLY HAPPENS TO BE MARY’S PET HOBBY. SHE ALSO DOES VERY WELL IN BASKETBALL AND ALGEBRA. Next to last is the only blonde in the class , Marlene Dailey. She has quite a temper, but she’s all smiles when you mention some certain PERSON. (I WONDER WHY?) MaRLENE ALSO MAKES A VERY GOOD BASKETBALL GUARD.LAST BUT NOT LEAST is Kathryn Trettin who was formerly from the COUNTRY SCHOOL. SINCE SHE HAD HAD NO PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE IN THE LINE OF BASKETBALL} SHE DESERVES A COMPLIMENT FOR HER VERY FINE progress. That about winds up the Freshman Class History. Hope our brief description- HASN 'T LEFT YOU TOO MUCH IN THE DARK. THE HIGH LIGHTS OF THE YEAR OF COURSE WAS IN- ITIATION WHICH WAS HELD SEPT. 20, I 948.------- That day in school found us all dressed very HUMOROUSLY. The DAY WAS CLIMAXED BY THE PARTY HELD THAT NIGHT. MANY CONSEQUENCES WERE UNDERGONE BY ALL FRESHMAN. EVEN THOUGH THE EVENT PROVED TO BE EMBARRASSING AT TIMES, IT WAS ENJOYED BY ALL. Blind Man's Bluff: A passer-by tossed a nickel TOWARD THE BLIND MAN’S CUP AND MISSED, THE COIN ROLLING AWAY. WHEN THE BEGGAR CHASED AND RETRIEVED IT, THE DONOR SAID, ”1 THOUGHT YOU WERE BLIND.1’ ’’Oh, I’m not the regular blind man,’’ was THE CHEERFUL REPLY. I’M JUST TAKING HIS JOB OVER WHILE HE’S AT THE MOVIES. GIRLS BASKETBALL BOY'S BASKETBALL The Grafton team was cons jered as fair IN THIS MEMORABLE YEAR OF I 949 WITH THE TEAM RATING FOURTH PLACE IN THE COi'ITY. THE TEAM WAS MADE UP OF THREE SENIORS, TWO SOPHOMORES AN D THREE FRESHMEN . The total personal scorvmg was led by Jack Kuehn with i63. He was '-ollowed by his brother Richard with i45. O.e Schultz scored 104 points with Keith Bork close behind with 95 points Earl Backhaus ht the basket for 20 points and Tommy Wagner for ii. Last but not least we have Ellsworth Greiner with 9 POI NTS. We feel that Earl, Tom, Paul and Bud DIO A SWELL JOB AS THI S I S THE F I RST YEAR THAT THEY HAD A CHANCE TO PLAY. The SENIORS ENJOYED WORKING WITH THE FRESHMAN AND THE NEW COACH, Paris Di . Gregorio, ano the rest of the- FACULTY. Perry was great and helped the basketball TEAM TO WIN THE NINE GAMES THIS YEAR. OUR STARTING LINE UP WAS AS FOLLOWS FORWARDS------ Ramona Nack, Mary Ann Navratil and Maxine Nitcher Guards“-4 1arlene Ann Dailey, Elaine Bublitz, and Shirley May Our first game was PLAYED AT ROCK FALLS WITH DELORES HuEBNER BRINGING US OUT ON TOP BY SINKING THREE FIELD GOALS IN THE LAST QUARTER OF THE GAME. THE NEXT TWO GAMES5 WITH ORCHARD AND MITCHELL WERE PLAYED ON OUR HOME FLOOR. BOTH OF THESE BEING EASY VICTORIES. OUR FOURTH STRAIGHT VICTORY WAS PLAYED WITH FERTILE. THE SCORE BEING VERY CLOSE THROUGHOUT, MADE IT TURNOUT TO BE ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING GAMES OF THE season. Something must have happened to MAKE US SLIP IN THE NEXT FOUR GAMES, SINCE THEY WERE ALL DEFEATS, PLAYED WITH MANLY, Kensett, Hanlontown and Manly. Finally TURNING OVER A NEW LEAF WE WON THE TWO FOLLOWING GAMES PLAYED WITH FERTILE AND Kensett. Everyone was excited about our VICTORY OVER KENSETT SINCE THEY HAD DEFEATED US ON THEIR FLOOR. 'URNING OUR RECORD AGAIN WE LOST ANOTHER GAME TO HANLONTOWN. THIS BROUGHT US UP TO OUR COUNTY TOURNAMENT BEGINNING Feb. 22, AND BEING HELD AT MANLY. We THOUGHT THAT WE WERE VERY UNLUCKY AND HAD to play Hanlontown the first night. Going over to Manly with high spirits to come out on TOP WASN’T ENOUGH, as WE LOST BY QUITE A SCORE. Our sectional tournament began Feb. 2, 1949 at Fertile. Our first game was played the third with Kensett. This being a victory we played Hanlontown the next night. Being defeated we WENT INTO THE CONSOLATION PLAYING VENTURA WITH ONLY FOUR OF OUR MAIN TEAM PLAYERS. Coming out on top we brought home our first TROPHEY FOR 49. OUR FINAL HOME GAME WAS PLAYED with Plymouth being another easy victory. This WAS ONE GAME IN WHICH ALL THE GIRLS GOT A CHANCE TO PLAY. RAMONA NaCK WAS HIGH POINT- WITH 16. We still have two games left to play BEFORE WE CLOSE OUR SEASON. THESE TWO GAMES WILL BE PLAYED WITH ORCHARD AND PLYMOUTH. Perhaps it isn’t customary for a coach to stick in a few words on the basketball page OF THE ANNUAL, BUT SINCE THE WRITER OF THIS PAGE IS VERY MODEST, I FEEL IN THE POSITION TO do so. Give credit where credit is due, I ALWAYS SAY. DURING THE 1948-49 SEASON OUR ONLY SENIOR FORWARD, MaXINE NlTCHER HAS SET A RECORD OF 24 POINTS PER GAME. HER HIGHEST SCORING WAS against Orchard when she went out for 38 points. To Maxine and Shirley, our senior girls and the entire ball club, I say a hearty thanks for BEING THE FINE KIDS THAT YOU ARE. Mildren Johnson We hope that next years team may keep up THE GOOD WORK AND PUT GRAFTONS NAME ON THE UNDEFEATED LIST. WE ALSO OWE A MILLION -THANKS to Miss Johnson who has given our team a lot of SWELL COACHING. I’d like to bring Keith home to dinner tonight, said Perry. 'To dinner tonight, screamed his wife, You IDIOTI YOU KNOW THAT THE MAID HAS LEFT, I'VE GOT A COLD, BABY'S CUTTING TEETH,THE FURNACE IS BROKEN, THE BUTCHER WON'T GIVE US CREDIT UNTIL WE PAY UP, AND-----” I KNOW ,----SAID PERRY, 'That's why I want to bring him.
