Row 23 Coach Chyrl Bergvig, Sue Tonderum, Becky Green, Marcia Thu, Kristy Duus, and Kathy Kulow. The Pirette softball team under Coach Chyrl Bergvig finished third in a very well balanced conference with a 9-5 record. The team ended up second in sectional play and then dropped out of tournament play to Melvin. Three Pirettes landed on the All-Conference team: Sue Ton- derum, Lori Schachercr, and Kathy Kulow. ,dwrrq , x - . , Y BA EBALL Row l: Tom Tindall, Dave Elscnbast, Mike Baas, Pat Brobst, and Steve Prather. Row 2: Brian Neilson, Tony Masters, Mike Millea, Bruce Masters, Dave Matheason and Tom Torreson. The Pirates' Baseball team finished in a tie for second in the Conference. They ended their season with a 12-9 record. Pat Brobst and Mike Millea were elected first team all-conference for infield, Bruce Masters for first team outfielder, and Dave Matheason first team pitcher. I . 12 .rv 3 Freshman class wins the float competition with Make Those Passes Count. 1 The G.H.S. band marches in the parade. iw X QQ KI lk The window display winner. Homecoming '79 will be well remem- bered by all as many fun and exciting events occurred. The cheerleaders des- ignated each day something different for Spirit Week for each class to par- ticipate. The FFA and cheerleaders sponsored the exotic games in which the Junior class moved to be the victor. Even though the weather was cold and windy, the parade went on. With much pride, the Pirate football team made Homecoming complete by defeating Mallard. ! .fa pf L.,- glw PIR TE FGGTB LL K 1979 Graettinger Pirate Football team ffront row Left to Rightj Assistant Coach Kevin Thiele, Mark Brighton, Jeff Rients, Keith Iverson, Rod Ruettcr, Mike Petersen, Frank Elsenbast, Wade Alesch, Herbie Besaw, Head Coach Rod Hough. CROW 21 Steve Olescn, Dallan VanLaar, Rod Hanson, Kelly Schany, Perry Hersom, Ron Hanson, Craig Hanson, Dean Jensen. CBack Rowj Pat Brobst, Terry Heller, Rick Bates, Mike Millea, Bruce Masters, Dave Elsenbast, Dave Petersen, Tony Masters, Randy Bates. The 1979 Pirate football squad had a very successful season, finishing with a 7-2 Conference record. Graet tinger ended in a three-way tie for second place in the Cornbelt. The only low spot in the season was a 40-14 loss to Conference champ Terril in the second week of the season After that the Graettinger gridders picked up momentum and put on some awesome offensive displays includin an 80-28 drubbing of Sioux Rapids- Rembrandt. The Pirates only other loss came in an 11-8 defensive struggl with West Bend late in the season. Bruce Masters picked up over 1000 yards on the season with the help of a strong line. Graettinger loses only fiv seniors and will return a large number of lettermen, giving high hopes of the 1980 season. Pirate offense are set for action. The Pirates placed eight gridders on the l979 All-Corn- belt Conference teams. First team picks were Dave Elsen- bast, offensive end and defen- sive linebackerg Mike Millea offensive and defensive line- mang Bruce Masters, running backg and Pat Brobst defensive back. Masters was also named as a second team defensive linebacker and Dave Petersen was chosen as a second team quarterback. Dean Jensen, Kelly Schany, and Tony Mas- ters received honorable men- tion. The Pirette Volleyball team under new head coach Dennis Mozer had a slow season this year as they only recorded two victories. With only three seniors on the team, much experience will be coming back for a very promising next year. The Pirates finished fifth place in the Conference race with West Bend winning it. The Pirates placed two people on the All-Conference team, Senior Pat Brobst and Junior Dave Petersen. Three of he five losses were to the conference champs, erril Tigerettes, in which the Pirettes placed econd behind them in the conference races. In ournament play the girls defeated Arnolds Park fter drawing a byeg then they bowed. out to erril in the sectional finals. With much exper- nce returning, next year's team looks very romising. The team loses Barb Herke, Kathy ulow, and Lori Schacherer due to graduation.
