Band The Graettinger School Band was quite depleted in certain sections due to the gradua- tion of twelve students in May 1949. Many eager young students joined this year so our mem- bership was kept at forty. To start the year the band appeared in uniform at the annual Labor Day celebration. Gwen McWilliams auditioned and was selected as a member of the all state band which played at the K.R.N,T, teachter in Des Moines, November 26th. They had planned for a winter concert in December, but had to cancel it because Mr. Jones was ill. On April 12th, an instrumental music concert was given in the high school auditorium. The band played a series of numbers and contest soloi-sts and small ensembles were also featured. Graettinger was the host to the Palo Alto County Band Festival, February 9, 1950. Mr. Myran Russel of I.S.T.C. conducted the two hundred and twenty-five piece band and the ninety piece all county band. These groups presented a program that evening in the auditorium The band has accepted an invitation to attend the North Iowa Band Festival in Mason City on June 13th. Gwen McWilliams was selected as our representative in the Miss North Iowa Queen Contest. Mr. Jones put in many hours teaching the band the art of marching in preparation for this event and also for our coming football games. The preliminary contest of the Iowa High School Music Association series was held at Britt, Iowa, April 1. The solo and small group entries and ratings were as follows: Divi- sion I rating---Clarinet solo, Gwen McWilliamsg Alto Sax solo, lone Bonsteadg Baritone Euphonium solo, Jean Fodgeg Snare Drum solo, Larry Kirkegaardg Clarinet Trio, Gwen McWilliams, Marianna Spies, Jonne Shiley, Joan Elsenbastg Division II---Cornet Trio, Ingvert Appel, Dick Wikert, Irene Heideckerg Druni Ensemble, Mary Lou Thompson, Ronnie Robinson, Larry Kirkegaard, Roger Henningsen. The preliminary contest for large groups was held at Arnolds Park, April 15th. The Graettinger concert band, competed with twelve other class C bands and received a Divi- sion II rating. All students that received superior ratings from the preliminary contest went to Storm Lake April 21st and 22nd to compete in the district contest. The ratings were as follows: Division I--Clarinet solo, Gwen McWilliams: Clarinet trio and Clarinet Quartet: Division II-- Alto sax solo, Ione Bonsteadg Baritone Euphonium solo, Jean Fudge: Snare Drum solo, Larry Kirkegaard. The final state contest for solos and small groups was held at Perry on May 6th, Gwen McWilliams received a Division II on her clarinet solo and the Clarinet Trio a division Ilg the Clarinet Quartet received a Division II. As a final reward for their work during the year all students who qualified and earned the honor were presented with a Band G , Class night May ZZ, 1950.
