What have ten vears done to tarnish or polish this endowment ? Fulfilling a pact made by the Senior Class of 1950 to discover each others fate, thirty-five of us met at the designated place, a coal-barge headed for the Rock of Gibralter on May 26, 1960. Those unable to attend included: Eugene Baedke, noted anthropologist, who at the time was on a world tour in search of the lost chord and the missing link. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Reynolds were occupied at the time as Mr. Reynolds was rebuilding the Brooklyn Bridge which collapsed under the weight of Leroy Skow's moving vans. Leroy is serving a ten year jail sentence for the offense. Mrs. Reynolds was occupied with house- hold duties and the care of their five children. se rest of our classmates met at the port of New York and boarded the barge. Ten years nad done a lot to change many of our friends. These are some of the results over a ten yea r period. Mrs. Darrel Malm, the former Doris Baxter, whose husband is now general manager of the Emmetsburg Rendering Works, distributed samples of the new perfume she is now endorsing. Lois Sandvig, noted missionary and theologist, visited her old classmates until she had to meet necessary travel requirements to journey to the heart of Africa to convert the natives there. Lois reports that they just eat up religion. She is the fourth missionary to go there in four months. Ione Tonderum told us that she has won a reputation as Graettinger's most skillful and reliable blacksmith, Recently she has received an award from Ames College for shoeing the most horses in a single year. Mr. and Mrs. Norris Rierson, Mrs. Rierson being the former Betty Westergard, are prosperous mid-western farmers, owning a Cadillac and jet propelled 1960 Buick. Shirley Young is now a stewardess on the Comet Line which attempted the first space trip to the moon. Shirley assured us the trip was a success, but she prefers the U.S. to the moon. Jack Platter has risen from garbage collector to night watchman in Graettinger. Josephine Fitzpatrick is the owner of an antique shop featuring Beryl Starkey and his Chrysler. Mavis Knutsen has recently achieved great fame as a model. Mavis is now posing for Old Dutch Cleanser advertisements. Robert Thomsen having failed his course in Engineering has taken up peddling patent medicine, and is eluding the wiles of Don and Ron Oleson, Policemen. Z1 Delores Fisher and Verna Mammen have applied for positions scrubbing submarine decks in the U.S. Navy, which claims Floyd Chrestiansen as rear admiral.. Don Iverson has been crowned King of the Indianapolis Speedway. He has had only one crash in these past ten years. This brings his total up to two. Maynard Holland, we find, is giving dancing lessons in the South Pacific Islands, and here, also we find Catherine King trying to sell a ducky blue battleship to the King of Arabia. Gwen McWilliams, world famous scientist, is attempting to prove Darwin's Theory . So far she has been doing very well. Donna J. Flannegan after ten years has graduated from Nurse's Training and has married one of the high ranking brain specialists from Iowa University. The couple are leaving for Washington D.C. very soon where they will begin work in their clinic for under- privileged Chinese boys. Avery Bonstead after ten years of courtship with the same girl has given up and is now general manager of the Disabled Bachelor's Apartments with Arvid Peterson and Richard Jensen as honorary members. Mary Hanson with her family of ten was having an extremely difficult time on board the barge with her triplets, Hank, Frank, and I ank, who were amusing themselves by hang- ing out head first from the port-holes. Joan Christiansen is receiving laurels as a world renowned soprano. In her latest stage success, she ably portrayed the role of Carmen. Frederick Wilken has just returned from the dark continent of Africa where he is operating a prosperous date bureau for the not-so-intelligent natives. He is doing a thriv- ing business. By the way, Fred has married a charming African girl and has come into quite a fortune from her father. James Voigt has just received his bachelor's degree in Girlology at Iowa University. He plans to put his knowledge into practice very soon. LaDon Zitterick, now known to her friends as Babetta Laleeta is an accomplished bubble dancer at the bull fights in South America. Janet Marxen was a dancer until she broke her leg. Now, she sells shoestrings on a street corner in New York City. Shirley Rasmussen has entered the winning horse in the Kentucky Derby for the last three years. With her winnings Shirley is planning to set up a horse ranch in Colorado and lasso a cowboy for a husband. Mary Lou Marine and Myrtle Simonsen have set up a Matrimonial Bureau. They have helped many people to secure a wife or husband. Catherine Elsenbast is now employed in television singing happily and with great feeling in a Lifebuoy Quartet. Mary Hash, the former Mary Wolf, has taken her husband to Des Moines where they have set up a restaurant featuring Hash's special hash . ZZ Now that the class of '50 has seen each other, we realize that each one of us has made a place for ourselves in the world. As our barge hit the icy waters of Gibraltar, we agreed to hold an Alumni banquet in another ten years to see what another ten years win do for us. ' , l A Class History In September, 1946, forty-six Freshmen started their cruise up the river with their main objective being to reach its mouth, or graduation, by May, 1950. The crew was composed of Eugene Baedke, Avery Bonstead, Elaine Brobst, Floyd Chrestianson, Joan Christianson, Agnes Dalen, Catherine Elsenbast, Delores Fisher, Josephine Fitzpatrick, Donna Jean Flannegan, Maynard Holland, Donald Iverson, Richard Jensen, Catherine King, Mary Kirkegaard, Mavis Knutsen, Vera Mammen, Mary Lou Marine, Janet Marxen, Marlene McDonald, Patrick McDonald, Gene McDonald, Gwendolyn McWilliams, Duane Munson, Donald Oleson, Ronald Olson, Arvid Peterson, Jack Platter, Shirley Rasmussen, John Reynolds, Norris Rierson, Lois Sandvig, Richard Schaney, Myrtle Simonsen, LeRoy Skow, Beryl Starkey, Robert Thomsen, lone Tonderum, James Voigt, Kenneth Vollmert, Edna Westergard, Betty Westergard, Donald Westfall, Mary Wolfe, Shirley Young, and LaDon Zitterick. The fall of 1947 found that seven of them had been taken by the current and were no longer with us. They were Agnes Dalen, Gene McDonald, Duane Munson, John Reynolds, Richard Schaney, Kenneth Vollmert, and Edna Westergard. Two new members, Fred Wilken, and Merle Meyers were added to our crew. When our cruise was half completed, the fall of 1948 found that three more of our loyal crew members had left us. They were Marlene McDonald, Patrick McDonald, and Donald Westfall. Two crew members had become tired of their names, so they changed them from Elaine Brobst to Elaine Reynolds, and from Mary Kirkegaard to Mary Hanson, respectively. Also we found that three seamen had joined us. They were Doris Baxter, Bill Reynolds, and Bob Gile. There were now forty-one in the crew to start the second half of our cruise. Our last stretch, which began in September, 1949, found that our crew ,had not changed much, only that Bob Gile and Merle Meyers had gone and another one of our crew members changed her name from Mary Wolfe to Mary Hash. And so ends the voyage which we began hopefully four years ago. In spite of the storms and tempests, we have successfully completed our journey and are now ready to take our places in the big, wide world. We are the first bus in this morning! Walt finally condescends to ring the bell. A mad rush in the girls' lab. Well, it's five to, I guess we'd better go up. Mr Manchester, SOCIOLOGY CLASS !, You have wasted 342 minutes and the taxpayers money! Avery comes in late for class. Mr. Manchester is still conducting Sociology class. Physics: Ye Gads, another test and I haven't even read it , quote Betty. Farm Management: Jim falls asleep in class after seeing Francis with Mavis K. Hmm! Miss Shannon, You seventeen people in Speech class are the worst in H.S., Quite a compliment. ' ' Study Hall: Mr. Smith: If you don't quiet down you'1l have to sit here until 10 after 12. ' Hurry up or they'1l beat us down to lunch. Oh! look at that long line again Ice cream cones, cokes, candy bars and gum. Now who can we ride up to school with Crowded mirrors for the beauty rush. Move over or we'll be late for shorthand. Bob T. in Manual Arts class, Oh, Mr. Peterson, there goes another saw! In the study hall - Jack - Now who can I bother next? How long does it take you to quiet down in he re. Englishclass. No baseball game ? Well what else can I go to? The longest hour of the day. Won't the bell ever ring. Mad rush for the bus. Walt hurriedly sweeps the floor!! e Everyone is gone. Now the place .is turned over to the mice. 24 Class Will We, the members of the Senior Class of 1950, being of sound minds, do make this our last will and testament, on this twenty-second day of May. Just think how happy you'd be if you lost everything you have right now--and then got it back again. Love has the power of making you believe what you would normally treat with the deep- est suspicion. A man who has his initials on his pajamas must be uncertain of himself. Edith Peton Joyce Rierson Evelyn Peton Lois Jacobsen Dixie Jones, a stranger from the deep south Helen Jean Paulson Joyce Narley Tessy Vashki, who loves her Iowa home town, is about to marry Ozzy Fredrick, Chicago glamour lad. The Vashki household buzzes with wedding preparations, a pair of vociferous twins, a tuba playing kid brother, and of all things, bees. The bees belong to Johnny Jones, ex-marine, who has moved next door while Tessy was away at college. A sector of his apiary swarms the Vashki chimney, and as Tessy is about to kiss her fiance, one of the bees stings her right on the lip. Indignant, Tessy telephones the ex-marine to give him a piece of her mind. Johnny arrives to render first aid, and recalling a remedy used on him as a boy by his mother, he surprises Tessy by treating her bee sting with a kiss. Tessy and Johnny are hitting it off famously when Ozzy returns to find the ex-marine administering a second treat- ment by way of osculation. Discovering that Tessy, whom he has fallen for, is engaged, Johnny assists with the wedding rehearsal. He goes in quest of a minister, but returns without benefit of clergy. He merely asks at the door of each minister if there was anybody who would like to subscribe to Esquire magazine and they told him no. ' 63 The wedding is further complicated by the discovery that Ozzv's aunt is unscrupulously trying to force Johnny Jones out of business. Tessy, outraged atthis unfair treatment of an ex-marine, is ready to interfere when Dixie, a honeysuckle from the Deep South, arrives ask- ing for her Johnny. She claims she is his wife, At this, Tessy is a tempest. Johnny Jones will play her for a sucker, will he? All right, She'll marry Ozzy at once. They are at the I do stage in the ceremony, when Johnny, with a large, flappy beeman's hat and mask, jumps out of the fireplace yelling for everyone to run for cover--the bees are loose. The final round involves a boxing bout, the fire department, and the return of Dixie to discover she has her Johnny Joneses mixed up. In a Kaleidoscopic finish that is the epitome of the skilled play craft, Johnny gets Tessy, Ozzy gets one of the twins he'.s been sweet on all along, and the bees get smoked out, along with everyone e1se. Senior Play Pride and Prejudice This romantic comedy in three acts was presented two nights by the Senior Class on May 10th and llth in the auditorium. Characters: Mr. Bennet, an easygoing man Avery Bonstead Mrs. Bennet, his flighty wife Shirley Rasmussen Jane, their gentle daughter Betty Westergard Elizabeth, their independent daughter Mavis Knutsen Mary, their bookish daughter Catherine King Catherine, their fretful daughter Catherine Elsenbast Lydia, their flirtatious daughter Janet Marxen Mr. Collins, a pompous young clergyman Fredrick Wilken Mr. Bingley, a proud young man Norris Rierson Miss Bingley, his haughty sister Gwen McWilliams Mr. Darcy, a haughty young man Maynard Holland Lady Catherine De Bourgh, his overbearing aunt Donna Jean Flannegan Lady Lucas, a neighbor LaDon Zitterich Charlotte, her plain daughter Joan Christianson Mr. Wickham, a young officer Richard Jensen Hill, a maid lone Tonderum There are five daughters to marry off! Was ever a mother as put upon as Mrs. Bennet? Jane, the sweet tempered beauty of the family is not apt to prove a problem. Flir- tatious Lydia elopes with a penniless, but handsome, young officer. But Elizabeth is so critical that her good looks hardly count. When her clergyman cousin comes to court her, she brushes him off without a second glance. Mama is franticf Then Jane falls deeply in love with the wealthy Mr. Bingley, and it looks as if an affair is possible between Elizabeth and Mr. Bingley's friend, Mr. Darcy. But Mr. Darcy is a proud young man, and is shocked by Mama's vulgar attempts at matchmaking. He not only whisks himself off to London, but takes Mr. Bingley with him--before he is ensnared. Jane is heartbroken, and pines away until she becomes ill. Elizabeth is enraged that such an injustice should be done dear, sweet Jane. And then Mr. Darcy comes back to propose to Elizabeth against his better judgment . She promptly tells him Noi and berates him for taking Mr. Bingley away and breaking Jane's heart. But the deep attraction between Elizabeth and Darcy triumphs over the pride of one and the prejudice of the other and both couples are re-united. Mrs. Bennet is delighted! Three daughters mar- ried! Now she can concentrate on her other two daughters. 64 315 2 gii: .. :, :J1 fr V lv X Xb 1 V , H , , I , 'ifsaiiz , 159 .' fi fg 5 bb V ,.,... 54 52 We KP' ,:, W was H ,Lv 2 ,gf Q , Q Q .QQ ns M K 1 '2X'S? ,mx Nm, 1 A ew 52 rm gw X 5 564 W xg 355 ' lx of ,, I Y V' ,pgA0lYcg5 Bbfzek Gweh Q fcf Cakeb fd Mere ouloj Amd XL-204154 'PIA-4 Q90 2'6- 24? +940 Q63 GOING SOMEWHERE ?
