Siegel, retiring superintendent in charge of vocational high schools. Our employees, young men and women trained in New York City's vocational high school system, thus wish to express to Superintendent Siegel their appreciation of his efforts on their behalf. I feel greatly honored in being asked to be the dedicatee of the William E. Grady Yearbook, Encore, for the coming year, especially as 1954 marks for me the comple- tion of 50 years of service for the children of this City. Unlike other schools in this City, your school has a comparatively short history, yet it can lay claim to many outstanding achievements. Separated as you are in four different buildings, in distant parts of Brooklyn, under the inspiring leadership of your principal, Mr. Philip Becker, and his devoted administrative and teaching staff, these separate units have been welded into a strong student body, intent on obtain- ing the full advantages of general and vocational education. No little share of this achievement belongs to your parents, who as an organized group have supported Mr. Becker, your teachers, and you, in obtaining the approval of the city fathers and the Board of Education in the early erection of a suitable building to bear the proud name of William E. Grady. I am sure that the spirit of William E. Grady is among you and is proud of the fine record of the school bearing his name. The future belongs to you. Yours is the responsibility as pioneers to build a new world. I have every confidence in you and I send you my greetings and God speed! Sincerely, Morris E. Grady Corporation, producers of fine products in many fields, presents to the public in pictures and words, its Annual Report. The employees of the Grady Corporation produce many articles of great usefulness and beauty'-eleo trical products, artistic works, articles of skilled carpentry, automotive products, metallic articles, designs in the field of fashion, and beautifully made apparel. ln addition, Grady craftsmen perform many services to benfit the public: they design hair styles and give permanent waves, haircuts and manicuresg repair motors, radios and television sets, do body and fender work, paint signs and draw illustrations: print pamphlets and general information, and help the general public in many other ways. Since very few companies, in this day of specialization, produce such a variety of products and perform so many services requiring much skill and training we feel the William E. Grady Company is unique. Encore was designed, planned and written to familiarize you who receive the benefits of our work with Grady employees, their products, skills, personalities, interests and leisure time pursuits. 7 FROM THE DESK OF: The Chairman of the Board of Directors T0: The Class of lune 1954 RE: Graduation The past year witnessed great progress for our organization in that our facilities have been improved and expanded. The completion of the alterations at the girls' building, providing us with up-to-date beauty culture shops, and the modernization program at the main building assure us for the first time of modern shops, labora- tories, and equipment for our juniors and seniors. These plant improvements, coupled with the increased efficiency of our staff, must inevitably result in better perparing our product, you the graduates, for the rofe of economically independent citizenship. To the class of lune 1954 we owe much, it is not only the largest graduating class but it also has been the one which endured most and worked hardest in the campaign which culminated with an appropriation of money for a new building. With the conviction that your success will reflect honor to your alma mater and that we can always depend on you if the need arises, the faculty and your fellow students at Grady bid you God Speed. Grady Corporation. We pause now to look at some of the highlights of these years. We remember our first day at either the 192 Plant, the 212 Plant, or the 180 Plant. . . the knowledge that we were part of the new organization known as William E. Grady filling us with pride . . . our first meeting with Mr. Becker, the Chairman of the Board . . . and other Board members . . . Mr. Pendergast, Miss McCormack, Mr. Hyman, Mr. Emil, Mr. Bromer . . . the poor elevator service . . . making us walk endless flights of stairs . . . those gigantic hero sandwiches for lunch . . . our being allowed to try various shops and departments . . . Metal Trades . . . Commercial Art . . . Printing . . . Needle Trades . . . Woodworking . . . Electrical Trades . . . Beauty Culture . . . Auto Mechanics . . . the impressive ceremony which saw Mr. Becker officially installed as Chairman of the Board of Directors . . . all these made 1950-1 a memorable year .... Year 1951-2 . . . instead of getting one large plant we were given another small one, 45595 . . . and another Board Member, Mr. Winston . . . now we had four plants scattered over South Brooklyn . . . still having trouble with elevators . . . those stairs keep getting steeper and steeper . . . the Corporation organized its first team . . . the Swimming Team, coached by Mr. Glading . . . the boys, 60 of them, didn't win any meets but they had a lot of fun . . . Mr. Sandack had a little more luck with his Basketball Team . . . they won one . . . The reader will also find samples ofthe creative work, both literary and artistic, of our employees. l ft H Vi i- 5 Ill ll 5 hi Z BE-B011 wot-QKERS A 15: I4 AND I SUEDE SHUES W :rss- is . iii? by Donald Trainor Once upon a time in the clarinet reeds of Brooklyn there stood a house of hepsters called Grady. In this here now building a real bopster could dig himself some good jive and a cool script. Let me tell you man, this plant is for no squares. All the cats grab themselves some real skin and trade Down Beat Magazines before sessions. After the Morris office gives out with a down beat, all the sessions begin cutting wax and sometimes they put down with some real crazy rhythm. Just as things begin to really swing and the notes are really getting hot, the first four sessions are over and a 45 minute break is taken. During this break the boys pile out and give the gab over harmony grits on the latest in Basin Street. Basin Street, in case you're not hep, is a place where all crazy mixed up kids get real gone. While they talk, song sheets fly and the music box cuts some real cool records. Before you can say Guy Lombardo's Royal Canadians the break is over and the workers go back to their sessions. Sometimes the canaries will drop over to give out with a few notes. Sometimes one of the boys will try to cut out. But all the head of the Morris office has to say is: What's the lick? You're really goofen off here Clyde, in fact, you're bopping. Now let's get with it. According to your four year contract, you've got to stick with us. lf you keep cutting out, we'll have to consult your agent. Do you dig me? And in most cases, the mixed up cat will say: l'm hep and he'll quickly Arthur Murray it back to his group, never to wander away again. Four more sessions and all the cats pile out and make it for home as another day scuffles by. Since we arrived at 8:30 A.lVl., a mere fifteen minutes late, we stayed around for a few minutes more before entering the factory. Then we started to go to our first of nine jobs. Everything ran smoothfy for us, but the supervisor had a little trouble getting his demonstration working. After struggling with it for many minutes, he finally admitted defeat in a few hundred words, saying, lVlany experiments don't work the first time but they lay the groundwork for future experiments. At the sound of the alarm, we reported to our next job. Here we saw a scholarly looking gentleman with glasses and a brief case rush into the room. He placed his brief case on the desk and rapped the desk three times. Immediately following these blasts, a sudden air of quiet blanketed the room and everyone was seated in his place with his mouth closed. The supervisor then opened his checkbook, at the same time uttering these immortal lines, 'tVllill anyone who is absent please stand? After a slight pause he added, l'm glad to see that all of you are wide awake and have your notebooks open. This job is our favorite, since our foreman constantly drops pearls 46 4P. f 55' ' 1 iff e ' ' ff? rf ff' mf : 4 'll ll l of wisdom for us to absorb as we work. We often start talking about some current topic, but the supervisor stops this by saying, We could discuss this interesting topic all year but we must go on with our work. While proceeding to our fourth and fifth jobs, we electricians met a group of commercial artists. We love all our fellow workers, of course. Therefore it must be just an accident that every time our wires and their cans of paint meet face to face the result is insulation of turpentine all over the floor. By good clean living and a lot of luck, we survived a brief twenty-five minute talk by the supervisors. Then we started to work feverishly. Our job consisted of winding thin wire around a circular piece of metal with many slots and grooves in it. The workers were deeply engrossed in their task until the whistle blew for clean up. ln this process, four workers man one broom with a broken handle and a brush. With this equipment, they are supposed to clean 900 square feet. Mother's littie helpers, we electricians! From this job we went to lunch at loe's Cafeteria where the workers go to feed both their stomachs and the juke box. One-twenty crept up fast and it was time to report to our afternoon job, in a factory room commonly referred to as Draft Board 431. Here we planned our Annual Report and studied English and personality problems. All the workers unanimously agreed that one year's study of personality problems qualifies a worker for the position of moderator of the J. J. Anthony show or supervisor in charge of personnel. At the Grady plant the alarm ended this job promptly with the supervisor frantically pointing to the board and pleading with us to copy our extra-curricular job. A short time later the factory whistle blew and so did wel 47 3:59, g:g:g:,:- :.:,: ,li , , , ,:5:g:5:5:5:5:5:5:3:5:' '-' N., '-:5:i:'2:2:i:'i:' ' - ,'I'I555E55555l:i:l:l:i:2:l:g5-c1.f'- YQ' A' -.-.ag - F- 'w 3Q:::::::g::: .alex . William E. Grady-2054 by George Gnad lt is 8 A.M., April 1, 2054. We are high above Brooklyn in one of the 100 jet helicopters that daily carry 20,000 workers to and from the nation's finest plant, The William E. Grady Corporation. Like so many homing pigeons the planes alight on the four acre roof of the 20 story structure. We step out onto the red velvet carpet unrolled by the custodial staff and walk to the elevators. When we arrive at the main floor we are struck with admiration for the magnificent murals and paintings created by the Grady Commercial Art Class. A short ride on the conveyor belt takes us to the office of the Gradient, Brook- lyn's most popular newspaper with a circulation of 500,000 daily. The Journalism Class is alive with action as student reporters dash hither and yon, editors edit, and the presses, manned by the Grady Printing Class, grind out 5,000 copies per minute. The Gradient is published in five foreign language editions and has offices in 21 countries. We tear ourselves away and next pay a visit to the Grady Automotive Shops which turn out the popular Gradymobile national favorite with teenagers. Grady's Auto Mechanics build 850,000 of these runabouts each year. A bell announces lunch and we join the throng headed for the cafeteria. After checking our coats, we are shown to our reserved table. During a delicious 8-course dinner, we are entertained by Joe Jive and his 150-piece band, the Gradyettes, and the 250-member Grady Chorus. After lunch we continue on our tour with a stop at the Grady Library, second largest in the country, containing 10,000,000 volumes. Books are delivered by pneu- matic tube to each table to save workers the task of going through miles of stacks. A tremendous roar causes us to run out into the hall and to the electrical lab. There we learn that Grady's Electricians are experimenting with two huge generators driven by uranium power. When they are finished they will supply electric power for the whole of New York City. The day has slipped by almost without our realizing it and all we have time for are short stops at the Woodworking Shops, which are making hundreds of pre- fabricated houses a day, and the Metal Trades Shops, which are turning out atomic subs for the Navy. One last look at the beautiful edifice and we go back to the roof where we board our waiting helicopter. And so, as the sun sinks inthe West, we say goodbye to the marble halls and ivy- covered towers of Grady, our Alma Mater, Grady of 2054. 51 5' ,JA .Z LZ IMZZLW CH ATTE R BOX GX 45:6 MOST OUTSPOKEN go, . 1' 34 hiwudgwwaxug CLASS POLITICIAN GN. xx K Malay JWLJHJJO CLASS COMEOIAN mam 457' fffalaef BEST DANCER QuueTesT fX -'N N-K CLASS ATH LETE TH E BRAIN 6Z'4'4'-'ff9lv145f14?q, BOOQKWOILM l Rlfwfdff MOST' POPULAR 4-R f Xt! xx A Q CLASS PET .A Www 0100 FASHION DESIGNER fi I Qifgxz ?1f'e SWEETEST GRADUATE 01 jRfjN -Q f ZX- Q.,--A Xb 2 16' Sv Q CLQS FLIKT fs ,A X Lax 7fw..f, CLASS Cl-OWN Q LQ 5311? 3 gas f x, Cx Age-4v73ew CLU5 BRIDE xp ,- xx, Agxadxppfguow TYPICAL SENIOR he Mysterious Slasher Plant Detective Monday Fagan Catches Culprit Dum DumDum Dum: lThis story you are about to read is true. Only the names have been changed to protect the writer.l You're a beautician assigned to the Beauty Parlor. A mysterious slasher has cut the fingers of 20 patrons during this week. My job: Get her. My name is Pat Monday. My partner is Rose Smith, the boss is Marian Brown. lt's October 23. The New York weather is balmy. Rose and l checked in at headquarters. We questioned several victims. But none can describe the slasher. lt happened too quickly, they claim. Tuesday, 9:00-A 24-hour stakeout is arranged to cover the shop area where the slasher is expected to strike next. We wait two hours. Nothing happens. I ask Rosie: How's the family? She replies: Fine, but I need more sleep. Wednesday, 9:00-We checked in at the office. There's a report that two more slashings have occurred. Still no leads. Marian Brown walks in. She says the corpora- tion presidents wants the case cracked soon. Marian tells us to use as many girls as necessary to solve the case. I ask Rose: How's the family? She replies: I told you yesterday. Thursday, 10:32-Still no leads. At 11:00 a special patrol covering the lunch rooms bring in a suspect. They caught her with two butter knives on her lunch tray. Thursday, 11:45-We question the suspect. She claims she needs two knives because her sandwich was too tough to cut with just one. We release the suspect after tasting the sandwich. Friday, 11:14-We relieve the men at the stakeout. We wait. Suddenly a patron clutches her own hand. Her fingers are bleeding. Rosie grabs a beautician nearby. Okay, Mazie, Rosie says, We've caught you with this red-handed girl, you might as well confess. 54 The beautician covers her face with her hands. l'll tell you, she muttered. The slasher is right here. Where? I asked. She makes a sweeping motion across the whole room. Here, there, everywhere, she said. No, I must confess, I did it, I didn't mean to do it. I don't know what came over me. I thought the hair cutting scissors was for cutting nails. But it seems I went up a little too far. Rosie and I checked in at the office, exhausted. The shop is placed under constant surveillance. On October 30th, the report is filed at the William E. Grady Company offices. It is determined that the careless workers be punished by making them write the slogan l'm just a beautician, not a mortician 25,000 times. However, now there is another thought in the minds of this year's departing employ- ees, a sad, nostalgic thought, one which seems to bring back all the good times we had in our four years of life at Grady. As we walk down the aisle to receive our Certificates of Achievement and Honorary Discharges, the boys and girls will be thinking of the many good shows they saw in the plant auditorium, such shows as Finian's Rainbow and Pecos Bill for which the Grady Dramatics Club worked hard and earnestly. Always one of the best shows of the year was the Christmas Show featuring the talented Grady Chorus. These performances will linger in our memory. At this time, we who are about to depart would like to thank the staff and the supervisors for their splendid teachings and advice. We would like to thank our shop supervisors, whether the shop be Electric, Commercial Art, Woodworking, Auto Nlechanics, Beauty Culture, Dressmaking or Machine Shop, for helping us develop the skills we need to advance in our diverse fields. We are grateful to all our academic instructors for giving us valuable information concerning history, English, mathe- matics, and science, thus providing us with a cultural background to understand our world. Our gratitude also goes to our personnel advisers and heads of all departments for their part in making our careers as easy and successful as possible. Last, but not least, we would like to thank Mr. Becker, our corporation president, for making our years of training seem like the greatest four years of our lives. Thus it is with both joy and sadness in our hearts that we take our leave of the William E. Grady Corpora- tion. 55 f p - I f Q I k.Q ff' 'V Vx f'7 , . , X 'X f f' , ,iffa Q 1 ' f ff!! f , , ,,V,lC 'L.x Miss Barbara Adesso Mrs. Florence Adesso George T. Adesso Thomas G.
