For niost of you, forinal schooling will stop, at least for a while, and you will begin the task of building a produetiyc and useful life on the foundation which you acquired during your stay in school under the guidance of your teachers and your parents. It is safe to say that neyer again will you be guided, as you were here, by a group of ineu and woinen whose sole duty was to assist you in correcting your weaknesses and in deyeloping to the fullest all your strengths. 'l'he fact that you liaye suryiyed and that you are about to be graduated is evidence of their success. What does the granting of a diploina niean? lt syinbolixes that you haye succeeded in dcyeloping a reasonable degree of skill. This includes inanual skills necessary in the occupation you haye chosen as your life work, inental skills, and, of far greater importance, the social skills so essential for the preseryation of our way of life. lt syinbolizes that you are of good character: honest, industrious, respectful, perseyer- ingg in short, a person of integrity who will not be easily led froin the path of righteousness. It indicates that you haye attained an acceptable degree of scholarship, that you haye acquired an ability to think, to benefit froin the thinking of others, and to express your thoughts through the spoken or written word. These will reinain with you long after the fun you had at school is forgotten or just a wistful nicniory.
