IIIIIIIIIIIIIII music in '85 This year saw the end of Victory for Michael Jackson and the start of the Purple Reign. Prince domi- nated music news with his Purple Rain movie, album and concert tour. Critics chose Prince as the artist of the year in Rolling Stone Magazine. Riding the wave of Prince's success in film was Mor- ris Day and his group, The Time. In fact the power of Prince brought popularity to many Soul, R8cB acts, shadowing last years heavy metalists. Groups like Mid- night Star and Kool and the Gang beat out Twisted Sister and Ratt. Solo artists, Lionel Richie and Chaka Khan raked in awards as well. Still, Bruce Springsteen could not be held back. His Born in the U.S.A. album and concert tour grossed incredible profits and the Boss was chosen by Rolling Stone Readers as the artist of the year. The comeback of the year award definately went to Tina Turner who returned with a bang and her Private Dancer album. Other artists that dominated the music scene were U-2, Frankie Goes to Hollywood and the girl with Hair 'by Crayola , Cyndi Lauper. The biggest music news however, was the move ment towards charitable group efforts. December saw the release of a single Do They Know its Christ- mas? , sung by a group of British artists called Band Aid. The song was written for the Ethiopians suffering from fomine. All profits went to help these victims Gnd the artists oil donated their time. Bob Geldorf of the Boomtown Rats was the organizer of the event. Band Aid was the inspiration for the American coun- terpart, USA for Africa. Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie co-wrote the song We Are the World which dominated the airwaves for weeks. A prestigious group of artists including Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles participated in the making of the single Gnd an album. Within the first week of its release, the single sold over 1 million copies. This year in music was exciting and innovative.
