Individual expression was central in this year's anything goes or as some would say, few things sacred trend in clothing, makeup and hair styles. Fashion was closely related to the music world. Because of the popularity of MTV and video, artists were seen more often and their clothing emulated. The androgynous look exhibited by Annie Lenox of the Eurithmics and Boy George appealed to many while the lacy look and paisley prints of Prince gained popularity with others. Trash became beautified as bangles and beads became the rage modeling the tastes of Cyndy Lauper Cher polystyrene hair never quite caught on here at Graceland howevery. Springsteen inspired a return to the all american im- age with levis, all cotton T shirts and tennis shoes. A bold black and white movement emerged patterning Frankie Goes to HOllyWOOd arid bore phrases like RELAX and FEED THE WORLD. Fashionable colors ranged from the ever popular rand safey black, to some pretty obnoxious neons. lf rubber scorpion earrings weren't quite your bag, designers like Benelton pro vlded some more functional wardrobe alternatives 'for the average joe. That is what 18 students did the sum- mer of 1984. Mountain Valley Center located in Lyons, Colorado, is GraceIand's summer program in the mountains. It is the fulfillment of a dream of creative learning in inspiring surroundings and is an innovative addition to Graceland's ofterings.
