co CERTS ART SHO is Did you see Wings? Attend the Stravinsky concert? Examine the blown glass by Dick Bird? If you saw these, or any of the other artfshows, plays, and concerts .held inthe Shaw Center this year, you experienced a work-of art. Were you impressed by the beautygpower, or intricacy of what you saw? If so, it was because of the .intense prep- aration by the art-istsg learning and creating, perfecting, and finally preparing for a final presentation. Artists have pic- tures to frame and a gallery to arrange: actors have makeup and costumes, lights and sound to coordinateg and musi- cians must plan how to move onstage and consider howvthe room and audiencewill affect the sound. All these, and many other little details, help to create a work of art that in.- spires or entertains the audi- ence-you. , , X 1 -Rebecca Ramsey V., , - ,--. - . f .txa . pihv' Pllays,5AConcerts, ArtShows!23

In .England during the lt16th Qcenturyg 'Christmas was one another for lavish banquets and eintertainrnent. Afrequent form of amusement wiasuthe singing -of madrigals. These were as songs- writtenf for several separate- voice parts, skillfullyg woven together so that each. part is an interesting and independent melody, yet all combine to form a pleasing whole. The lords and ladies would sing these madrigals themselves following theirsucculent holiday dinners. , i e This was the atmosphere re-created at the Seventh Annual Olde ' - English Madrigal Dinner. The Commons was transformed into a lofty banquet hall, and guests were served a meal featuring duck roasted in piquant sauce. Entertainment was provided by the lords, ladies, and minstrels who are members of the ,Chamber Singers. Under the direction of Richard Por- ter, they performed a selection of madrigals, carols, and modern Christmas music. The festivities were enhanced by the court jester, the beggar, woman, and the assistance of the recorder consort and herald trumpetsg -Rebecca Ramsey f Greg Darling, Gerald Ramsey, and Ben LaShu1 u A V V iPhoto: Rod Schalll l,,,5t.LQ,1 4.1 I., , L .l 1 24fMadr1gal i a qtime for' merriment,g.The'. .landedegentryi tti' visited
