In .England during the lt16th Qcenturyg 'Christmas was one another for lavish banquets and eintertainrnent. Afrequent form of amusement wiasuthe singing -of madrigals. These were as songs- writtenf for several separate- voice parts, skillfullyg woven together so that each. part is an interesting and independent melody, yet all combine to form a pleasing whole. The lords and ladies would sing these madrigals themselves following theirsucculent holiday dinners. , i e This was the atmosphere re-created at the Seventh Annual Olde ' - English Madrigal Dinner. The Commons was transformed into a lofty banquet hall, and guests were served a meal featuring duck roasted in piquant sauce. Entertainment was provided by the lords, ladies, and minstrels who are members of the ,Chamber Singers. Under the direction of Richard Por- ter, they performed a selection of madrigals, carols, and modern Christmas music.
