ll . Y J Our campus must continue grow as needs dictate, and thus a part of what Graceland is, is its fu- ture. Durlng Homecoming 1979, a step foward Graceland's future was tak- faen. On October 6, 1979, ground was jbroken next to the construction site A ofthe planned Shaw Center for Wor- fshlp and the Arts qsee opposite page and page 121 for photosy. This was a major step in a commitment to Graceland's future that was made In September, 1976. ln September, 1976, the college's Board of Trustees approved a five year fund raising campaign with a number of goals, including the even- tual construction of a chapel and the flrst part of a performing arts cen- ter on the Graceland campus. Five mllllon dollars were required to meet the goals of Commitment '81, as it was called. A llttle more than a year later, the Commltment '81 Committee, chaired by Canadian James Shaw, was formed to direct the campaign. The 24 members of the committee were themselves major financial contribu- tors to the campaign. Despite the hard work of commit- T66 memb6fS, hOWeV9l', The CGIT1- palgn dldn'f move along as fast as anflclpated. The committee looked at the rising costs of construction and the projected expenses of main- talnlng a fine arts building once the flrst part was completed. A decision had to be made. Gathering their nerves, the committee decided to , go after the whole hog, and. to ZTGISS the campaign's goal to nine 'lTtIlIl0n dollars Qfl'Om the Origirtdl five A Comm 'tment mllllon dollarsj, mostly to allow for construction of'alI, rather than just part, of the proposed fine arts build- Ing. By January, 1980, nearly one half of the nine million dollars had al- ready been raised, with additional pledges bringing the total of antici- pated funds to more than a million dollars over the expected progress level for that date of 6.3 million dol- lars. QPart of the money already raised was committed-spent-on the Roy A. Chevllle Chapel, which was com- pleted ln the spring of 1978. See pages 9, 52 and 53 for photos of the chapel.J Commitment '81 has been a suc- cess. Many people have helped make lt that way. These people in- clude the Commitment '81 Commit- tee, members of Graceland's devel- opment staff qwho solicit and collect money for the campaignj, students, staff, and alumni. Although the majority ot the funds collected have come from alumni and other sources outside the col- lege, the contributions of those indi- viduals here at Graceland should be recognized. By January, 1980, stu- dents and college employees had given some 670,000 to the Commit- ment '81 drive. Some of this, for ex- ample, came from a fund raising campaign directed by members of Aaron house. Last year, they collect- ed some S15,000, a sum which was matched for 810,000 by the Smith brothers qMike, Gene, and Daley, all alumnl, for a total contribution of S25, 000. But the actual figures are not so im- portant as the fact that many, many people have given much of their time, energy, and money to support Commitment '81. These people be lleve strongly in the future of Graceland and have made their own particular contributions toward that future. These people not only make this college a special one now, but are helping to make the college even more special in the fu- ture . . . through Commitment '81. - D.G.
