Eighty some years ago, a brick and stone building was constructed on the crest of a hill in southern lo wa. lt stood by itselh a lonely monument. But the individuals who had raised the building dared to call it a col lege. Such was the ambitious begin ning of Graceland College. ln the intervening years, of course, the Graceland Campus has expand ed considerably. That lonely build ing, which we now call the Adminis- tration Building, remains as a symbol of our college. But it is no longer alone. Today it is surrounded by nu merous facilities, with neat lawns and trees and shrubs in between. Yes, the campus has changed over the years. And this change is a continuing process, because our campus will grow and expand as the needs of ' 2 the college dictate. One example of this process is the new Shaw Center for Worship and the Arts, which will soon be under construction. At the center of the college, how- even and overlooking the changes that occur around it, will remain the brick and stone building which was the start ot a new college many years ago and which today we call the Administration Building - the symbol of Graceland College. - D. i , Graceland is sponsored by the Re organized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Officially, our col lege is non-sectarian. The relation ship between the college and the church is an intricate one involving both freedom and dependence. Each has its own function and each makes its separate contribution to each other, according to the Graceland Bulletin. The fact remains, however, of the persuasive influence of the RLDS reli- gion in the lives of Graceland stu- dents. The importance of this religion can be seen in the extensive reli gious life program here. Other evi dence is the service willingly pro vided by student and faculty priesthood members, by chaplains of the various houses, and by individ ual students who dedicate their tal- ents, skllls, and time to the Lord. Final ly, the general prohibition against on campus smoking and drinking mirror the church's, and our own, attitudes toward these acts. In these ways, and in many others, our religion is part of Graceland. - D. G. 1. The scripture Uames 1:52 that Joseph Smlth read which prompted him to go to the woods and pray. 2. The church seal. 3.
