That Light its Rays Shall Cast From Portals of the Past’ ' THE SILVER GRACE HOSPITAL SCHOOL OL NURSING NINETEEN HUNDRED SIXTY-THREE VOLUME XI CROSS FOREWORD I am Hughson Hall. To some I am just a building, but to those who enter my doors I represent a part of life that can never be forgotten nor replaced. They came all with a purpose . . .to leave my doors clutching a diploma with the words Grace Hospital School of Nursing. Some came dedicated to serve. . . others with more useless reasons. Only those who came with this desire for service were allowed to wear the white uniform for only they could have the power to withstand the sometimes seemly impossible demands. They came as children, ignorant, inquisitive, searching for the truth in life. I took them in and within my walls their future in nursing began. 3 Contents Administration Classes Activities Departments 4 EDICATED TO Mrs. Joretta Jaquins . . . Because you gave us new encouragement and guided us through our three difficult years. Because you tried to overlook the faults in us. Because you were concerned about each individual. Because you understood us. Because you helped us the simple, earthly way ... by teaching and in- spiring the rest of us to be more conscious of our duty. Because you gave a part of you to help brighten our lives, you have earned our everlasting thanks. To you, Mrs. Jaquins, the Senior Class, gratefully dedicate the 1963 edition of The Silver Cross. 5 We Honor . . . For your understanding, patience and wisdom . . . For guiding us in our daily lives at Hughson Hall . . . For being our housemother and friend. . . We will always remember and proudly honor you. Mrs. Lily M. Nicholson Dr. John C. Reece For never tiring of our endless questions as you unfolded the miracle of human life before us . . . For being an inspiration as a doctor, teacher and friend. . . We give our tribute and honor. 6 7 Board of Trustees C- J H ' ' 1 B§ mil.:.. 1 Ik ' . .rs ' Hf ' i: ' w ujli jHKI f Ulr jPj j iH V Mr. Donnell Van Noppen, President; Mr. H. We entered timidly, because there was a world of faces that we did not know . . . and we were away from our own familiar hospital. But after the first week, it was a place of laughter, hurrying students, whispers and new friend s. We found the joy of discovery that we could think by ourselves and complete our assignments there as well as we could at home. We found that we could do our share toward helping people to regain mental health and return to their communities. The landmarks we remember also . . .Barton Hall, where we spent many happy hours . . .The Point, where we could almost see the City of Washington at our feet. . .The sight-seeing trips and Merrill’s where we could just socialize. We remember, the day passing grades advanced our names and our days of affiliation were over. Another experience had been added to our development in nursing. 14 The Senior Class Shirley Coffey, President; Donna Roulic, Secretary- Treasurer; Ruth Martin, Vice- President MISS PATRICIA ANN BURLESON Newland, North Carolina Dramatics Club-3; Annual Staff Photography Editor-3; Glee Club-1,2; Student Council-2,3; Literary Club-3; Y.W.A.-1,2. 16 MRS. I have heard tears of joy and laughter, as well as tears of defeat and sorrow, but all have now mingled into the past. I am proud of those who depart from my walls on graduation and tremble with joy for them, For to the world I have given not only a woman, but one now capable of contributing in this episode called life. The world awaits her and behind close the doors of immaturity. 44 ' A j I fc-- i I V i .- ' i ' ■■ 3 .. • -■ - - ■i • ■ ' . : - .
