SANTA FILOMENA Billie Newton, First Lady; Jane Franklin; Shirlee Lee, Sec. Treas.; Joyce Buchanan. Santa Filomena, Senior honoring society was organized at Duke University School of Nursing in April, 1944 and at Grace Hospital School of Nursing in June, 1953. The purpose of this organization is to recognize achievement and promote leadership. The members are chosen from the rising Senior class and are then publicly tapped by the old members at the first Student Government Association of their Senior year. Santa Filomena strives to p r o m 0 1 e better ways and higher nursing standards. The specific objectives are chosen by the members each year. All proceedings of the meetings of this organi- zation are held in secrecy, as are all ceremonies except the public tapping of the new members. The Santa Filomena flower is the white lily, and the members wear a small gold Florence Nightin- gale lamp. 26
