GRACE YESTERDAY Grace Hospital was founded in 1906 by Rev- erend and Mrs. Walter Hughson. Atthetime, Mr. Hughson was Rector of Grace Episcopal Church. The Nursing school was established in 1910. Miss Marie P. Allen R. N., graduate of the Protestant Mission Hospital of Philadelphia, Pa. was the first Director of Nursing. From the beginning, the school established high standards of ser- vice and educational growth which have been maintained. The original hospital had two wards, one semi-private room, kitchen, anda small office. As the hospital grew, new departments were opened increasing the opportunities to broaden and enrich the curriculum, thus preparing the students to meet the ever increasing demands inthe field of nursing. A silver cross suspended from a chain around the neck is worn by the students at Grace Hospital School of nursing in lieu of a class pin. It is a replica of the cross worn by the late Mr. Hughson. The crossis first presented to the students when they are awarded their caps upon completing their pre-clinical period. At the completion of their Nurse's training the initials, IHS, (In His Service), the students initials, the date and the name of the school are engraved on the cross which is then given to the nurse for permanent possession at gradua- tion.
