RIGGS .....WHO HAS GUIDED AND DIRECTED OUR PATHS THROUGH THESE YEARS OF TRAINING: AND NOW AS WE APPROACH ANEW DOOR OF OPPORTUNITY, WE PAUSE TO PAY HIM OUR MOST HUMBLE RESPECT AND APPRECIATION. GRACE YESTERDAY Grace Hospital was founded in 1906 by Rev- erend and Mrs. Walter Hughson. Atthetime, Mr. Hughson was Rector of Grace Episcopal Church. The Nursing school was established in 1910. Miss Marie P. Allen R. N., graduate of the Protestant Mission Hospital of Philadelphia, Pa. was the first Director of Nursing. From the beginning, the school established high standards of ser- vice and educational growth which have been maintained. The original hospital had two wards, one semi-private room, kitchen, anda small office. As the hospital grew, new departments were opened increasing the opportunities to broaden and enrich the curriculum, thus preparing the students to meet the ever increasing demands inthe field of nursing. A silver cross suspended from a chain around the neck is worn by the students at Grace Hospital School of nursing in lieu of a class pin. It is a replica of the cross worn by the late Mr. Hughson. The crossis first presented to the students when they are awarded their caps upon completing their pre-clinical period. At the completion of their Nurse's training the initials, IHS, (In His Service), the students initials, the date and the name of the school are engraved on the cross which is then given to the nurse for permanent possession at gradua- tion. After six months, they received their caps and silver crosses. A group of 14 is now the senior class, still filled with hopes and ambitions dampened only by hard work and plenty of reality. During that first year we lost Carolyn Hamby, Ann Carswell, Shirley Ford and Shirley Hayes. We missed them tremendously. Besides the hard work that year, we had lots of wonderful experiences which we are going to share with you, such as having Earlene Clark and Dr. Barron for Christmas Queen and King. Remember girls, how those Halloween masks and cast off clothes came in so handy when you wanted to be really dressed up for a local boy who wanted a date, and also for the bang-up Halloween Party. A few of the girls found a new use for one of the doctors when a car ran out of gas and the poor girls had to get out and push, although they did have their hair rolled and no shoes on. I guess those girls had forgotten they weren't supposed to wear bermudas and blue jeans! That same year, Dean, Pat, and Grace decided, after two weeks of campus, that basketball banquets were really compulsary. Ruby and Pat learned, through the same channel, that although there is another way of entrance besides the front door--the fire eScape--it is not the proper one. And we must not forget the embarrassment of June and Julia when they learned the hard way that Student Nurses do not follow the family out at a funeral in an Episcopal Church! Well, we will try to draw our memories from that first year and go on to the second one-------- If we thought for one minute that we studied and worked hard that first year, it was only because we hadn't been Juniors yet. But--don't you think that our keen little minds didn't find more ways of having fun. First, Pat had to learn not to go to sleep in class. Know what I mean? ? Again our candidates, Julia Thomas and Dr. Kibler, became Christmas Queen and King. About this same time June received a diamond and soon became a Mrs. That year we had our grand picnic in March before our classmates started going away to Washington, D.C. and all the good times up there. Why did it have to snow that day? Golly, remember how cold it was? The skating party that followed was pretty good too; at least we were warm! I know everybody remembers the Junior, Sr. banquet. They should, it was the best ever given! Gloria and Carolyn came to us and were great additions to an already great class. Near the end of that year, we lost Margie to Bird. We were grief stricken since by now we all felt like sisters. But we know that she is happy. As times goes on, so must we, so here we are in our thirdyear with our black bands and being called Seniors. Even with the year only half gone, nice things are happening. We had great success with the Talent Show at Halloween, and again our candidates became Christmas King and Queen. Stella Ballew and Dr. Hamer looked mighty nice as our class set a new record of three straight wins. Dean, Elva and Phyllis celebrated New Years with a bang and a loud bang behind the Pharmacy. Phyllis got a diamond for her left hand and while Frances was in D. C., she got one too. Earlene, now Mrs. Hanson had to leave for a while because having a baby is a mighty important thing. We hope she'll be back tofinish next year. I know the class of '60 would enjoy having her. Girls, I know there are plenty of things we could recall, but our space is limited and our minds have so many other things to do, but I think you will agree--it has been three good years, and a wonderful class. The Seniors say, THE BEST. 35) Baird, Miss Shirlee Ball, Miss Altha Dean Ballew, Mrs. Stella Barnette, Mrs. June Berry, Mrs. Elizabeth Boggs, Miss Florence Boone, Miss Anna Jane Bowles, Miss Ruby Buchanan, Miss Joyce Buchanan, Miss Martha Byrd, Miss Joanne Chester, Miss Lillie Childres, Miss Jean Clark, Miss Judith Crawley, Miss Regina Dalton, Miss Katherine Da y, Miss Grace Denton, Miss Emogene Dills, Miss Phyllis Driver, Miss Betty Jean Ford, Miss Margie Franklin, Miss Jane Kirksey, Miss Josephine Grigg, Miss Marjorie Hanson, Mrs. Earlene Leonhardt, Miss Shirley Lineburger, Miss Martha Lowman, Miss Betty Sue Miller, Miss Faye Naves, Miss Frances Newton, Mrs. Billie O'Kelly, Miss Doris Oldham, Mrs. Carolyn Phillips, Miss Ann Secrest, Mrs. Ann Townsend, Miss Nellie Urey, Miss Coleen Vanderford, Miss Jean Walker, Miss Sandra Wilson, Miss Virginia Young, Miss Elva Young, Miss Joy Young, Miss Frances ROSTER Rt. 1, Box 76-E, Vilas, N. BALLAD OF THE ALL-AMERICAN NURSE Listen here gals--I'm gonna' quote you a verse Bout how to become a professional nurse. Buy you a pencil and paper and a pair o' white shoes And get oriented---get your picture in the news. I fell in the trap--I forgot the date-- Somehow I thought I would really rate; Didn't figger on givin’ up all my fun. Let me tell you my troubles had just begun. Learned my chemistry, anatomy, and all that jazz, Tearin' my hair out and prayin' to pass, And all the while a voice in my ear--saying Just wait pal, It's harder next year. Well, the days crept by--man! I mean drag Then under each eye an overnight bag Appeared--to match those wrinkles, I guess That showed in my forehead after all those tests. Now I look back with a crooked smile On the days when I was free and wild And remember the day those nursin' blues Took away my dancin' shoes They said ''Take this here uniform. Give me tha t there party dress. Florence Boggs 37 How happy we were! Our first day in uniform. Mountains + Lake + Sun- shine= FUN Up on the mountain...
