The future still, of course, cannot be told, But your part in our past is etched in gold And will weave its golden thread, In our many years ahead. And to Dad, who always seemed to know Just when our funds were running low We don’t know how you did it, Dad, But for your insight we were glad. fat? In 1891 Grace Maternity Hospital had its beginning in a house situated at 486 Young Street. An increase in the birth rate soon warranted increased facilities and so the present Grace Hospital was established accommodating first thirty patients and in¬ creasing very soon to sixty. The building continued to expand and soon Grace Hospital was handling twenty-five per cent of Winnipeg births. In 1927 the now well-known maternity hospital became a General Hospital and in 1930 the School for Registered Nurses was established. A Nurses’ Residence was built in 1943. At present the hospital accommodates two hundred and fifty patients. The school graduates 40-50 nurses each year. As for the future— Plans between the Salvation Army, Manitoba Government and the City of St. James are being made for the construction of a new ultra-modern hospital, in the fast growing City of St. James. This hospital will provide general facilities to meet the needs of the public. The present hospital, it is hoped, will become a centre for more specialized types of treatment. We, the student body of Grace Hospital would like to offer to the Salvation Army our heartiest congratulations and best wishes for the future as a dream materializes and becomes a reality. Page 6
