Text from Pages 1 - 136 of the 1983 volume:

1 .. everything there is a season, and a time to | everything under heaven. : God gave us this segment in time, four short seasons, to live here at Grace. This past year at Grace had many good times, and some bad times. Some wasted it, some spent it wisely. lt was a time to grow Spiritually, to make friends, and even occasionally to study. There was a time for victory and a time for defeat. Time. Seconds, minutes, hours, days, years. So long, but yet so short. Time. EVANGELISM A SEASON OF CHEER N.C.C.A.A maTrectT CHAMPIONS ee ae Whether cheering on the sidelines of the soccer field or executing a mount on the basketball court, one could always find the cheerleaders active. They practiced several hours a week, working on chants, cheers, and mounts, so when the varsity games came, they were at their peak. Adding enthusiasm to the games was the main goal of the squad, but they also provided entertainment during game time-outs and half-times. Even when off the court and field, they were still busy. Led by Cozy Pittman, they had a bake sale, participated in Homecoming, and sold carnations for Valentine’s Day, among other things. ost a 2 . ‘nee f xe —— = ae s SZ ie 3. cA “9 « oF ‘ i £ . 4 Saye e+ ae ioe abies eee ae} wx “o of : % aon ay Bee sian Yene a hee Ca (Front Row): Sheryl Kantenwine, Julie Bechtel, Jill Mumaw, Jerri Ashcraft, Pam Thompson, Carol Hrubik; (Back Row) : Chuck Rice, John Garcia, Cozy Pittman, Wade Pangburn, Matt Powell. 47 48 PEPSI Physical Education majors make up this group. It was a lot of hard work, but all considered it to be worth the time and effort. Under the coaching of Ken Taylor (as he rode his moped to follow the runners) , the team posted a 2-2 dual meet record. With every tourney, though, they improved until the NCCAA tourney where they came in fifth. The girls’ top runner was T. Yeager who went as far as the NAIA Nationals in Wisconsin. Of the guys that ran, D. Cross was the outstanding competitor. He made all district NAIA and NCCAA. D. Harper gives his all. D. Kuni and J. Moine get the job done. R. Penrod pushes even harder. Round the corner, D. Hentschel. ee ee J. Simms runs all-out. Grace Cross Country goes to the press. You're almost home, D. The Lancers captured third place in the Mid-Central Conference and placed fourth in the state NAIA District 21 tourney. Freshman Charley Hueni won the number four singles title in the MCC tournament. Al Mumaw was runner-up in the second singles spot. Mumaw and number one singles player Greg Gibson were named to the all- conference team. Gibson and Mumaw, Grace’s top two singles players, also combined in the doubles competition to advance to the semi-finals of the state NAIA tournament. They were each awarded a spot on the NAIA District 21 all-tourney team for their efforts. If one had to describe the soccer team this year in one word, it would have to be ‘‘great’’! The record, coaching, teamwork, and the individuals were all superior to previous years, with several school records broken. With a 18-1 season record, Coach Dave Diehl had only praise for the team. Even though the team lost both games in the NAIA National Soccer Championship, the rest of the year was filled with successes. This year ended with the most wins for a Grace soccer team in a season, most offensive goals, least amount of goals scored by opponents, and NAIA district and area champs. There was no one player that stood out on the team but each player had his chance in the spotlight. Teamwork was one of the goals for the team and this led to five MCC recognized players, and four making NAIA All-District team. Coach Diehl was also honored as the MCC and NAIA District coach of the year. 9p) ce) 64 ' Time for Volleyball Ce They started off on the wrong foot, but by the end of the season they had pulled off a big comeback. Who did this? The girl’s volleyball team. Starting off slow, they built up momentum and won eight out of their last ten games to tally up a final 13-14 season. In the NCCAA District tourney they captured the 3rd place spot out of twelve teams. Coach Roger Stover was very ; pleased over all with the team, es - | , Se, and with the individual players, 2 w too. N. Hieb was named to the Awaiting the serve! All-Tournament team and each of the other players did exceptionally well, too. Coach Stover also stated that this was one of the most consistent volleyball teams that Grace has had and that everyone on the team played extremely well. Set! The Lancers won the NCCAA District 3 title and were finalists in the NC- CAA Nationals. Kessler was coach of the year for the MCC, the NCCAA District and Nationals and for NAIA District 21. Junior John Boal was first team All-American and All District in the NCCAA, All District NAIA, MCC Player of the Year and a member of the NCCAA _ National _all- tournament team. Senior Gary Blevins was named second team All-American, All District and a member of the NCCAA National all-tournament team. Gregg Miller, Kent Denlinger and Neal Frantz were also honored. Under the coaching of Karen Heckman, they ended the season with a 11-15 record, and to top off the season they won their last game by 36 points. Also at the NCCAA District Tournament they took third place. Coach Heckman commented that she was pleased with how the girls came back in the last several weeks and thought that all the girls played very well. C. Walters has the basket to herself. A. They also had the honor of ministering in Akron, Ohio at The Chapel. In spite of personnel _ changes, they combined for _ ministry and had a successful | year. This year could be con- sidered an experimental year for the freshman choir. That’s because it was not only freshmen, but also sophomores, to make a com- bined frosh-soph choir. Under Prof. Ogden’s direc- tion, the choir sang a variety of songs from Christian con- temporary to classical music. The 28-member choir met every week to prepare for their spring break tour. Over spring break, they went to Virginia and gave concerts in chur- ches. They also went to Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan throughout the year. Mishawaka was the place to be that Friday evening for those in the freshman or sophomore class. It was a time of relaxation, good food, and fun. After the meal in the castle-like banquet room came the entertainment. Al Holley gave a concert of his music by singing and playing his guitar. After the program, there was more time for socializing, and finally, at the end of a good evening, the crowd dwindled and it was time to return to Grace. The banquet was held at the Honeywell Center in Wabash on April 16. What made this year’s banquet special though was the enter- tainment. The musical group ‘“‘Glad’”’ was there and gave a concert after the meal. Under the leadership of T. Poyner, Junior class president, the juniors worked hard preparing for the evening. There was first a social hour, followed by the meal and concert. It was a time to be remembered by all who attended. 100 May Day is known for its festivities and fun, and this year was no exception. On May 6, at 1:00, classes were let out and everyone headed down to the Winona Beach. The fun began with the Winona Waddle 2.5 mile race. It was followed by a canoe race and paddleboats, and then a barbecue supper on the beach. That evening, the festivities ended with the showing of “My Fair Lady.” 101 TIME-OUT Academic studies and pur- poses of collegiate life put a real damper on time spent outside enjoying beautiful weather, be it a Snow person or a sunshine lover. Despite the priority of study, many students make a real ef- fort to get out and participate in the climate that God pro- vides for us. Time spent in creation and nature is vital and encouraging to the Christian. We thank God for our time at Grace Col- lege and in Indiana. err i t 1 H ‘ i s 102 103 SENIORS RECOGNIZED 104 THROUGHOUT THE YEAR 105 FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICES Alcorn, Dr. Bruce K. Mr. Robert Mahl served as the company’s representative. Students worked hard and used their creative imaginations to try to design a yearbook that would be entertaining to the school’s student body, but above and beyond that, they wanted to create a yearbook to the glory of God. The theme of the yearbook and, our the staff's life for the year, has been Ecclesiastes 3:1 and following. ... to everything there is a deadline, and a time to every bill under the supervision of Taylor Publishing Co. A time to write copy, and a time to crop pictures; a time to think up captions, and a time to type. (Heritage Version) . There is a time for everything under the heaven, and we hope that you enjoy the time you spend looking and browsing through this yearbook. Thank you, Taylor Publishing Company and Bob Mahl.
