Graciation, a new alternative to initiation, combined the imaginative dramatic talents of the sophomore class and the music of Pete Carlson in an evening of fun and fellowship between the freshmen and sophomores. Two weeks later the Freshman Family, as it became known, supported their team in a losing effort as the sophomores soundly defeated them in an unprecendented Derby Bowl. Pir, Dedicated freshmen brave the cold to watch the Derby Bowl. Pete Carlson in concert. REHEARSALS Behind every moment of glory are hours of practice. Whether it be sports or music, road ministry teams or local ministries, practice is an essential ingredient. Often we watch outstanding performances without thinking about all the practice behind them. Individuals must practice on their own to make the team effort run smoothly. Yes, practice is hard work, but almost anyone who has had their moment of glory will say that it is worth it all. N. Tress and J. Wroughton in “Diary of Anne Frank.” Howdy from a puppet. STUDENT LIFE a SA EA Student life at Grace College involves much more than just meets the eye. College is a time of studies and learning, but is also a time of socialization, spiritual emphasis, and many organizations, creating responsibility. Of course, at G.C. there is an emphasis placed upon chapel. Many different speakers from all over come in and speak to the student body in different ways. Sports are integrated as a vital time of growing together and working for a unique cause. Dramas and music groups were used to spread God's word. This year was the “Year of Crutches.” It seemed as if it was “Preppy” to be on crutches, or at _ least the “in” thing to do. Student life is important and essential for growth, and is usually well-taken or participated in. 19 Greek Club K. Knox, J. Walter, C. Nelson, B. Sandy (Advisor), A. Mitchell. oo Rl - French Club K. This year's speaker was Pastor Knute Larson from Ashland, Ohio. ONE 29 THE DIARY | OF ANNE, FRANK % Hitler's rise to power in Germany spelled death to millions of people unfortunate enough to bear the brunt of his hatred. By the end of the war, over twelve million people had been exterminated by the Nazis. Half of those people were Jews. The Grace College fall production, ‘The Diary of Anne Frank,’ related the story of eight Jews caught in the midst of the turmoil. Forced into hiding, where they remained for over two years, the Frank family and the Tan Daan family were discovered and eventually met death in a Nazi concentration camp. This stirring drama vividly portrayed man’s inhumanity to man and the sustaining strength that comes from faith in God. f ee A | HOMECOMING A Mexican Fiesta was the theme for Homecoming 1981. A “trip” to Mexico made a special occasion for the crowning of the queen. Ginger Schneider had the priviledge of reigning as the 1981 Homecoming Queen. The | ee ‘theme was carried throughout as each class participated in duilding a float for competition. zach class was well ‘epresented with the sophomore Class having the winning float. “4 Both the soccer team and the volleyball team displayed great ability for the homecoming spectators. The volleyball team was unsuccessful in their efforts while the soccer team won 6-1 over St. Joseph. The homecoming and parent’s weekend closed with flair by having the traditional homecoming banquet. A Mexican feast was served. The festivities were brought to a conclusion by an inspiring concert by Billy Speer. y ‘ Vy we) “Nothing better than home cooked food.”’ FALL RETREAT Fall retreat this year consisted of picnic on the lawn, volleyball, softball games, campfire on the lake. PREPARATION FOR THE WORLD Many ministry teams traveled out from Grace College to spread the Word of God, and to strengthen Christians in the United States. First, those students had to prepare themselves spiritually for this endeavor. Different chapels, day of prayer and a variety of sessions helped preparation not to be a chore, but an exciting learning process. 89 AST AMA ea tances sans te, Senior 92 Senior Art Exhibits Six students displayed their work for senior art exhibits this year. Included in the exhibits were: ceramics by Mark Whitacre and Jeff Moine; watercolors by Scott Holladay and Melinda Marvin; and prints by Kevin Konyha and Leslie Weikel. Recitals | Three seniors gave recitals this spring. Jim Coleman (piano) and Brett Deardorff (trumpet) combined their talents in one recital. Steve Placeway also gave a trumpet recital. Baccalaureate On the evening of May 20, 199 graduates, along with family and friends, gathered for their baccalaureate service. Dr. Joseph Stowell, Jr., guest speaker, instructed the upcoming graduates in the importance of knowing and practicing what they believe in Jesus Christ. Commencement 1989 Friday, May 21st. The Billy Sunday Tabernacle was filled with anticipation, excitement, fear, and regret. After all of the money is spent, all the studies are done, and many prayers have been spoken, each graduate was eager to accept that valuable piece of paper.
