Initiation . . . what ' s in a word? According to Funk Wagnalls, “initiation” is a word describing “the special instruction or ceremonial rites admitting one to some position, society, knowledge, etc. But accord¬ ing to the “victims of the Frosh class, initiation was: “getting a new hair style after two sleepless nights. (Connie Whitcomb) “sitting on the balcony watching the others go through it! (Sam Sigg) loud banging on the doors along with complete humilation. (Lisa Schultheis) “something everybody should do once in their lifetime — not twice, but once! (Craig Newkirk) the satisfaction of being physically fit after the exercises. (Pam McComas) a bad way to get up in the morn¬ ing .“ (Jim Fry) Freshman Initiation Spiritual Life Conference 1. After chapel, Poure explains a point to faculty members. 2. Gee, Yogi, it must be time for their Fall Retreat. Hope they bring some pic- a-nic baskets! Then we ' ll really have some fun. And fun is just what GC students had on Sep¬ tember 15 from 10 to 4 o ' clock. A great turn¬ out was reported for the day ' s activities, which included inter-class competition in softball, all- star football, volleyball for all, and mini-golf for free! As far as the pic-a-nic baskets, lunch in the lodge consisted of the traditional meal and fro¬ zen pudding! Strength for the day ' s activities . . . all you could eat. Students enjoyed the day as it gave them an opportunity to cut classes without a guilt complex as well as get away from Winnie Lake. The spirit of Christian fellowship was evident as everyone took part in the games. To sum it all up, the Fall Retreat was a day of fun, food, and fellowship for all! 4 % J 1. The decorations, the music, the audience, the attendants with their escorts, and especially the queen, were a part of what it took to develop the theme, Magical Memories. The audience waited breathlessly for the MC to announce the 1976 Homecoming Queen, Deb Keillor. Following the corona¬ tion, friends honored Queen Deb and her court at a reception held in the Green Room of the Intemationl Friendship House. m 1. These included: second place in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) National Tournament, second place in the NAIA District 21, first place in the NCCAA midwest regional, and first place in the Mid-Central Conference with no opponent scoring against the strongest defense Grace has ever fielded. Sophomore Paul Henning spearheaded the Lancer offensive attack, and is quickly being acknowleged, not just locally, but nationally. He was named to two All-American squads, placed on the MCC All-Conference team, and also the NCCAA District, Regional, and National Tournament teams. On various evenings between November 12th and 23rd, Beyer Home, on Chestnut Street, became the setting for the early 20th century play. Student Government When one attempts to review the accomplishments of Senate; one must bear in mind that it is merely a recommend¬ ing body. Catastrophic changes do not come overnight; they take time and the administration, though more than willing to hear recommendations for improvements, must weigh all the possibilities before taking action. We feel that through the efforts of Senate and really Student Government in gen¬ eral, an open line of communication has been maintained with the administration. Gary Herbruck President, Student Senate May 13, 1977 S.A.B. members exhibit avid enthusiasm: D. Parks, D. Rank, M. Yocum. Student Government Executive Board: D. Keillor, R. Schmidt, G. Herbruck, Dean Kreigbaum, J. Loy. 37 SAB Activities When SAB president, Jim Loy, was elected he promised an activity every weekend. That promise was not an empty one. There was some type of social event on campus every week¬ end, whether it was sponsored by a class, an organization, or SAB. There were a variety of things to choose from. Not only were there the usual SAB-planned activities such as Homecoming, banquets, and May Day, but special events like The Dating Game, The Gong Show, and The Hot Chocolate House. The list goes on. Its pages burn with the truth eternal, and they glow with a light sublime. The Bible stands though the hills may crumble, it will firmly stand though the earth shall tumble, I will plant my feet on its firm foundation, for the Bible stands. 64 i Missionary Conference At this year ' s conference, entitled Where? , stu¬ dents were encouraged to serve God wherever they are. People around the world are in need of the gos¬ pel. Jesus says, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields, that they are ripe for harvest. Already he who reaps is receiving wages, and is gathering fruit for life eternal; that he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. 65 r Chapel Chapel brings mixed emotions. Thoughts like, another chance to catch up on the sleep I lost last night talking to my roommate or, one more half-hour to cram for that big test at 11, run through the minds of many students. More often than not, chapel is a time of awakening, not physically, but mentally, to the truths that God wants us to know. Day of Prayer TRAVELING ON MY KNEES Last night I took a journey To a land far ' cross the seas; I didn ' t go by boat or plane, I traveled on my knees. I saw so many people there In deepest depths of sin, And Jesus told me I should go That there were souls to win. But I said, Jesus, I can ' t go And work with such as these. He answered quickly, Yes, you can By traveling on your knees. He said, You pray; I ' ll meet the need, You call and I will hear; Be concerned about lost souls, Of those both far and near. And so I tried i t, knelt in prayer, Gave up some hours of ease; I felt the Lord right by my side While traveling on my knees. As I prayed on and saw souls saved And twisted bodies healed, And saw God ' s workers ' strength renewed While laboring on the field, I said, Yes, Lord, I have a job My desire Thy will to please; I can go and heed Thy call By traveling on my knees. As the company traveled through Ohio, Virginia, South Carolina, Geor¬ gia, and Tennessee during the 10-day tour, many people experienced a brief glimpse of the characters surrounding the crucifixion. A communion service in a hotel room, an attack of laryngitis, lots of Rook, sleeping in the van, a visit in Gatlinburg, forgotten lines, a traffic ticket, recovering a roof-bound Fris- bee; these were a few of the things making this year ' s tour both meaning¬ ful and memorable. 1. Intramurals 1976-1977 The sun is setting over the trees, almost dipping in Winona Lake. The smell of burning leaves fills the air. In the pink-purple hue of the evening, a lone flag lies on the 50- yard line—a remnant of the game just played. Players and fans huddle near the sidelines. ELP DOS, a Greek word meaning “of hope, represents a Christian atti¬ tude which should pervade our lives and creative output. The despon¬ dency, isolation, and insecurity of modern literature and art forms should not be characterisitic of our media of communication. We see hope here and ahead in the person of Christ. ELP DOS is not just a product; it is a potential. This potential f ound within our school should develop over the years as one develops his mind. 1. Or when life doesn ' t bow to my every whim, When I ' ve lost my head and said too much, Or too little; When I look at my blundering being in shame And say, You fool. How it comforts me to know That you never think me so; And how I need you every moment To help me up when I begin to sink To understand when I want to cry. —Barb McClellan 40 fif , A ' ir ' iv WA N-i L 99 Honors Banquet Grace honored 41 students at the second annual Academic Honors Banquet held at the International Friendship House in Winona Lake. The bare¬ ness of the once poster-covered walls reflect the emptiness in my heart. It ' s a strange feeling. I ' ve reached the goal, that long-awaited honor of graduating from college, yet I feel as if I ' ve lost everything in the world. As I gaze at the red leather folder that encases the $12,000 prize it turns into an orientation schedule. Once again I ' m a freshman at Grace. I don a green beanie and wander around the campus, helplessly lost, yet wide-eyed with wonder. The sheet of paper turns into an exam, a quiz, a paper — one of the seemingly endless assignments of my college career. It becomes the program to that special banquet or the letter from that certain person. It ' s the list of rules, or announcements, or the truth God has been waiting to teach me. Tears blind my eyes as one by one, special friends and happy moments parade by. Each add their own touch to the paper. The coolness of the tears streaming down my face awaken me to the present. I move the limp, black gown aside and place the diploma in a box and close the flaps. I ' m moving into my apartment this afternoon. I can ' t go back. I must go forward. After all, commencement is not an end, it ' s a beginning. 102 ' M 1. Graduation is a time for remembering the good times. 2. Seniors start the walk down the aisle of life. 3. I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in right paths. When thou goest, thy steps shall not be straitened; and when thou runnest, thou shalt not stumble. Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life. Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men. Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away. Proverbs 4:10-15 First Brethren Church Long Beach, Calif DR. DAVID L. HOCKING, PASTOR Pike Grace Brethren Church R.
