' 1 .« j - y , ■ • «■• 4 ♦ r, i V ' fr , - • 7 H -V | In this year of our Lord 1976 we are honoring our country on the occasion of its 200th birthday—a country whose beginning roots were firmly esta¬ blished in the principle that except the Lord build the house they labor in vain that build it. It seems fitting on this occasion that we also show honor to a couple whose adherence to this principle has been exemplified in the growth of Grace Schools—Dr. and Mrs. Herman A. Hoyt. The Hoyts have been associated with Grace Schools since its inception in 1937. Dr. Hoyt, after having served as a teacher and then an administrator for several years, became president of Grace in 1962. At the end of this year Dr. Hoyt will once again assume a new position, that of chancellor. During the 39 years the Hoyts have spent at Grace, Mrs. Hoyt has continued to serve the school through serving her husband. This dear godly woman has faithfully filled the role of standing beside her husband since their marriage in 1930. It has been growing steadily since. None of its strengths are new, patched together or cosmetic. They are basic to what the college is. ' ’ So reads a part of the report sent to the college from the North Central Association. After three years of hard work, Grace gained full accreditation in 1976. Somehow, throwing rocks fits in too? Q y SPIRITUAL EMPHASIS Conferences Offer Spiritual Insight “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee . . Dedicated men who not only knew the Word of God and its practical appli cations but knew how to present their knowledge made conference both interesting and inspiring. Featured speakers were: Tom Taylor—Spiritual Life Conference, Dr. Gangle (5) and Dr. White-Bible Conference, Dan Hollis-G Club Conference (3), Dr. Fullerton (1 4) and Dr. Whitcomb- Missionary Conference. 65 Special Speakers Highlight Chapel The daily chapel period at Grace College provided a time for students to sleep, study, but most importantly to be spiritually challenged. Chaplain Jenkin’s leadership helped secure teachers and speakers for the sessions during the year. A number of capable men where brought to Grace including Knute Larson (2), Steve Bolt (3), Bill Glass (4) and Colonel Heath Bottom- ly (1). These men brought spiritual challenge to the student body. Inter¬ spersed throughout the year were a number of special bicentennial presenta¬ tions by Professor Steve Grill, Randy Maxson, Jane Lengyel and Steve Munday. Each portrayed an American figure important in the historical development of our nation. Spiritual Life Awards Spiritual life awards were presented this year to (back row) Allen Frey, Randy Groff, Thomas Williamson, (front row) Lisa Boggs, Cheryl Cessna, Jo Ann Rogers. . v v ; l BBS i Students Unite In Prayer and Spirit The fall and spring days of prayer served not only to afford students an opportunity to pray together, but were also unique spiritual experiences in that a real sense of the Holy Spirit was felt, drawing Christian brothers and sisters together with a bond of love. 69 1) GMA president Randy Schmidt 2) European Prayer Band—Dan Ramsey, Denise Plastow, Barb Aim, Mary McNally, Marjorie Jones 3) Hispanic Ministries—Scott Schaffer, Steve Nelson, Kerry Rapp, Marvin England, Brenda Welling, Tom Sharp, Joy Shirk, Kathy Rowell, Sheilah Champion, Martha Knop 4) Child Evangelism—Nancy Emch. 2 70 C race Missions in Action 72 A new GMA group, Foreign Missions Fellowship, was introduced this year. It was successful in keeping those who attended abreast of the need for and the needs of foreign missions. Jail team was another integral part of Grace Missions in Action. They found speaking at the jail both interesting and challenging. 73 Touring Qroups Praise the Lord! Three groups, outside of the choirs, toured for Grace this year. These consisted of two musical groups. (1) Sounding Brass, a brass ensemble; (2) Redeemed, a vocal group; and (3) one dramatic team, a reader’s theatre. 74 T The dorm provides a place for individual Bible Study as well as opportunities for group devotions and dorm Bible Studies. Chaplain Jenkins (below, left) uses an M-l during the Beta Bible Study to graphically illustrate a point. 77 “Christian Service” isn’t a one-act play, to be performed once a week and reported once a month; rather, Christian service is a way of life. It really I consists of Christians caring—caring enough to share their time and talents. The Lancer hooters defeated Grand Rapids Baptist College 2-1 to capture the NCCAA district play-offs. The Lancer five-milers finished behind Tri- State and Huntington, missing second place by only three points. 86 C race Cross Country Team Hosts National Meet Tennis Team Takes Number Two 88 A strong Lancer tennis team took the number two spot in the MCC Championships this year. All-Conference player Gary Woolman won the number one singles match, while Dave Beeson defeated all the competition in the number five singles category to help the team to the second-place standing. Lancers District III Champs! The Grace men’s varsity basketball team clinched the 1975-76 District III Championship of the NCCAA in a title bout against John Wesley, winning handily 100-86. The Lancers took second in the annual Turkey Classic being defeated by Olivet in overtime 66-65. Individual honors for the year went to Doug Noll and Bob Burns. Noll was selected as a member of the 1975-76 All District 21 Team of the NAIA, being fifth leading scorer in the NA1A this season with a 28.3 points per game average. Noll and Burns were both named to the All District III team while Burns’ outstanding performance during the Turkey Classic gave him a spot on the All Tourney Team. Phil Hoskins proved himself in his first year as head coach—producing a winning ball team and being elected Coach of the Year. Trackmen Second in NCCAA - (SLftitfO A determined Lancer track team turned in an outstanding perform¬ ance ending the season in second place both in the NCCAA and the MCC. Field events, previously a week spot for Grace, took a boost this year from several new perform¬ ers, while the Lancer running attack continued to dominate most of the opposition. The Lancerettes finished 13-3 for one of their best years ever. Team members included: Becky Stewart, Cathy Garrick, Lorraine Edmiston, Brenda Wilcoxson, Carol Hively, Nancy Lee, Missy Delk, Val Lundgren, Diana Stark. 103 The Lancerettes finished the 1976 softball season with a resounding 27-12 victory over Manchester in which they produced a record 31 hits. Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities is based upon elected and appointed leadership, attitudes, influence, and loyalty. Citizenship, campus activities, and general services also play an impor¬ tant part in determining who is honored. Those honored are first nominated by their fellow students. Faculty votes determine who re¬ ceives the honor. They sponsor parties, banquets, and other entertainment for the student body while they coordinate the programs and activities of the classes and organizations. Grace students flocked to the Lamp on April 24th attired in nostalgic ' regalia to attend this year’s SAB nostalgia. A variety of people attended “An Evening With George and Martha Washington.” They ranged from Daniel Boone to our national bird. ’ The highlight of the evening came with the introduction of George and Martha, played by Vic Derenzo and Kathy Kincarte. Bicentennial cake and ice cream was enjoyed by everyone and the film “The Great Race” was shown. 117 Freshman Initiatian -The Tribulation A thief in the night ... or rather, the morning. What is this? The rapture? No, it is initiation—a trying time of tribulation. Time to hit the showers (cold, of course) and turn the clothes inside out. Each freshman must receive the “mark of the sophomores” before going for the traditional serenade. Flour, water, and rolling in the dew. If this is what the Tribulation will be like, I’m sure glad I won’t be here. 1) Initiation can be a humiliating experience. 2) Freshmen “roll” into a new year. 3) An early morning serenade is enjoyed by Dr. and Mrs. Uphouse. 4) The “mark of the sophs” requires no utensils for Cindy Mann’s breakfast. 5) Neatness is not a requirement for Doug Strader s breakfast this morning. 118 1) Every muscle is put into action as Tim Arens carries the ball for the sophomores. 2) As they build their sand castle, Greg Howell and Colleen Jones build dreams of stronger substance. 3) One nice way to spend the day is soaking up the last few rays of the summer sun. 4) A good game of volley ball works up an appetite for lunch. 5) Retreat gives one an opportunity to discover the wonders of God’s creation. Fall Retreat - A Time for Relaxation The first few weeks are over—they game of soccer? If you are not too are the hardest and now there is a tired, let’s take a walk on the beach, chance to relax. Epworth Forest. Fall We can watch the sun set at the end Retreat. How about lunch, then a of a beautiful day. i Sue Downs Crowned Homecoming Queen 2 Coronation of Sue Downs as Home¬ coming Queen on Friday, October 3, began “A New Dawn”. Also reigning were attendents Kim Os¬ borne, Nancy Moore, Kathy Shirley, Kay Hoffman, and Brenda Frazier. After the coronation the court was honored at a reception at the Winona Hotel. From the Hotel, the Pep Club led the participants to the Athletic field for a bonfire pep rally. Saturday dawned a busy program for the court as it reigned over the Grace-Huntington Soccer match which the Lancers lost 3-2 in an overtime. The evening events included the Alumni Banquet at the Fairground’s Shrine Building and a musical concert at the Rode- heaver Auditorium. 1) Senior attendent Nancy Moore and her escort Lonnie Skiles, begin the long walk to the front. 2) The 1975 Grace College Homecoming Court and escorts. 1 to r. Frazier. 120 I 1) The reception gives Sue and Smitty an opportunity to greet friends and receive congratulations. 2) The master of cere¬ monies for the evening is Dr. Steve Young. 1 121 Valentines Hear Positive Side Unlucky spells broke as couples used February’s Friday the 13th to celebrate Valentine’s Day at the Winona Hotel. A banquet meal of fruit cocktail, rib eye steak, baked potato, broccoli with cheese sauce and cherry cheesecake preceded the musical entertainment, “Positive Side.” The Valentine charm carried to after-banquet retreats such as Ferrell’s Ice Cream Parlor in South Bend. 1) The Valentine’s Banquet holds pre¬ cious memories for special couples. 2) Valentine’s Day—a time for sharing hearts. 3) “Positive Side” from Ft. Fortunately for the prankee, the prankster’s idea back-fired and Vic was left holding the spoon for a birthday sundae even though it wasn’t his birthday. 123 Frosh-Soph Banquet at Ft. Wayne This year the freshman and sopho¬ more classes returned to the Heritage House in Ft. Wayne for the Fresh¬ man-Sophomore banquet on March 26. Couples enjoyed a delicious meal, choosing what they wanted from a vast array of dishes on the smorgasbord. Varied activities provided opportunities for families to get together. Programs were presented both Friday and Saturday evenings at Rodeheaver Auditorium. Family worship at various churches in the area gave a spiritual focus to the weekend. 1) Sponsored by the drama department, young and old enjoyed the Bicentennial pageant on Saturday. 2) Parent’s weekend gives father and son a chance to be alone. 3) A Bicentennial concert was presented Friday night under the direction of Prof. Felts. 4) Parents find the display in the educational resource center interesting. 130 1 )Gloria Carson explains a picture in the art gallery to guests. 2) Many profs, such as Dr. Dilling, were available to meet their student’s folks. 3) On hand to greet pa¬ rents was Mrs. Moore. 2 131 Artist-Concert Series Enlightens. Entertains 1 132 1) The Kantorei, the Singing Boys of Rockford, Illinois, presented a patriotic program second semester. 2) A member of the Indiana University faculty, Robert Rayfield, performed at the Winona Lake Brethren Church on November 8. 3) Wayne Fehrer observes a clock made by POW’s in Vietnam. 4) A Vietnam prisoner of war and the unofficial chaplain of prisoners in the “Hanoi Hilton,” Charles Plumb of Kansas City, autographs one of his books after his lecture. 5) Early in March, the New Christy Minstrels gave a varied program at Rodeheaver Auditorium. J 133 I 1776-1976 The Bicentennial 1) “Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof.” 2) Early in the year Prof. Grill portrayed Marquis de Lafayette in chapel. 3) Jane Lengyel gets some assistance with her make-up for Mercy Otis Warren. 4) The battle of Gettysburg was recalled by John Burns, presented by Prof. Grill. 5) The person of Abraham Lincoln was portrayed by Steve Munday in his senior recital. 134 Two hundred years of liberty was cele¬ brated in various ways on campus this year. In five separate presentations, famous characters from our history were presented. Three of these programs were requirements of speech majors.
