-1 ■■■■ i , ' -C : ■ 4,-.j .(. . - ' ' , ' W.. fj. i “Our purpose is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. ” This year’s book might be termed “a dedication to dedication.” Professor Cone held many places in the hearts of the Grace family as professor, father and friend. He inspired many of us to do even the most unpleasant task with zeal through his consistently optimistic view of life. October 22, 1973 was a day not easily forgotten as a time of victory in the Lord. With love and admiration, the 1974 Heritage is dedi¬ cated to George E. Cone. . . whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. ” I Corinthians 10:31b. The staff of Heritage ’74 had a purpose. That purpose has been to glorify God through the production of this book. As you look through the book today and in the future, we challenge you to live constantly with this same purpose in every aspect of life. Karen Mort Editor-in-chief Look Up and Live This business of living was meant to be more Than plodding along each day With head bowed down and eyes on the ground While Time ticks the hours away. God made this world a delightful place With beauty everywhere— The grass, the flowers, the trees, the sky. The tang of clean, fresh air— A world to be lived in, laughed in, loved. To be met with joy and zest, A world with a challenge for each of us To give it our very best. This business of living was never meant As a treadmill sort of thing; There are rivers to cross, and mountains to climb. And glorious songs to sing! Helen Lowrie Marshall Autumn 6 Conferences Dr. Robert D. Culver Rev. Arthur Konrad Three Conferences highlighted this year at Grace. In September, Dr. Robert D. Culver, chairman of the division of Systematic Theology at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Deerfield, Illinois, came to the cam¬ pus as the speaker for Spiritual Life Week. The Missionary Conference featured Rev. John W. Zielasko, foreign secretary of the Foreign Missionary Society of the Brethren Church, and Rev. George E. Ledden, Jr., the U.S. director of the Far Eastern Gospel Crusade. A variety of workshops were held throughout the week to enable students to achieve further insight in some of the challenges of mission¬ ary life. Dr. Merrill C. Tenney of Wheaton College Graduate School pre¬ sented the Louis S. Bauman Memorial Lectures as part of the 23rd Bible Conference. Also attending as speakers were Rev. Wesley Haller, pastor of the First Brethren Church, Johnstown, Pa., and Dr. Robert Gromacki, chairman of the division of Biblical Edu¬ cation, Cedarville College. Mr. Dewey Melton, a field representative of Grace Schools conducted a workshop on “The Christian and His Money.” 7 Division of Language and Literature Edgar J. ' «o ♦ Oi 25 Dear Mom and Dad, I’m homesick already and you’ve just left. This is a big step for me—and I’m not even sure why I’m here. I’ll try to do my best, but everything is unfamiliar and I’m scared. Mom, there are so many kids here—seems like I don’t know anyone . Love, Penelope Dear Mom and Dad, Now that I’m finally clean and dry I thought that I would write and tell you about my exciting day. Today was Freshmen Initiation—what a blessing! Of course they just had to choose the rainiest day to grab us out of bed at 4:00 a.m., put sugar and flour in our hair, and do all these nice things to us. We were prisoners and were each tagged with a number. We had to do all the neat little things that are required at initiations. Love, Penelope Dear Mom and Dad, Next week is final exams. This is it! My last chance. It’s been a good year. I’ve made a lot of good friends who I’m really gonna miss this summer. I just can’t seem to g et in gear to study—the weather is so nice and sunny, all I can think of is being outside. But I guess I’d better get busy. The activities began with a devotional session by Spiritual Life Conference speaker, Dr. Robert Culver. The juniors defeated the seniors, 15-1, but fell to the facul¬ ty, 13-9, in the softball tourney. In the big event of the day, the Beanie Bowl, the freshmen handily defeated the sophomores and immediately ex¬ pressed their joy by letting the beanies fly. Due to inclement weather the water activities were cancelled, but the time was filled with a pie-eating con¬ test and other games. George Webster Douglas Winter 56 Chapel Kenneth Taylor, Alva J. McClain Award Chapel services took on several new looks this year for the college. Commencing the schedule-was the Spiritual Life Conference with guest speaker Dr. Robert Culver. A special Bible. Science Conference followed in October with Dr. Henry Morris, Director of Creation Science Research Center, speaking on “Creationism vs. Evolutionism.” In the first mini conference of the fall semester. Dr. Hoyt spoke to the student body concerning prophecy. Students were challenged by four speakers during Home Missions Week in January: Rev. James Poyner, Rev. Robert Salazar, Rev. William Byers, and Dr. Lester Piter. Dr. Smith chose the charismatic movement as his topic for the second mini conference in March. Other mini conferences featured Dr. Whitcomb and Dr. Kent. Another innovation into the chapel services this year was the first optional chapel series. Students had an opportunity to choose from a list of ten topics the sessions they wished to attend. The G-Club Spiritual Life Conference featured for the third successive year Mr. Rick Huglies. Rick spoke on “Practical Christian Living.” Rounding out the special chapels were those involving the Division of Pine Arts. Traditionally, the culmination of the chapel session for the entire year was the awards chapel at which appropriate honors are made to some of the deserving workers who make the campus go. At this time one of the most important awards issued is the Alva J. McClain Award for Excellence in Teaching, this year presented to Kenneth Taylor. Rick Hughes, G-Club Spiritual Life Conference 57 Dear Mom and Dad, Remember liow I said 1 didn’t want to return to Grace this year? I’m glad I did. This year seems to be going a lot better-I think I’ve even managed to get a roommate I can get along with for the entire year. Seems like half the girls are married and haven’t returned. I guess they are happy with earning their MRS. degree. Not me! I’m back for an education now—forget the guys! Love, Penelope Dear Mom and Dad, I was just wondering if you received a letter yet from the college, maybe something about missing chapel! Don’t get too upset. Mom; it’s just that I don’t have an 8:30 class this semester and sometimes I guess I just sleep a little too late. I did cut a few times to study for tests. Well, anyway, don’t get too upset. Love, Penelope Dear Mom and Dad, Boy, you should have been at the Grace-Huntington game! The last fourteen seconds were enough to give me a heart attack! We had a three-point lead, 72-69. Huntington got a basket. They fouled Dave Staff and he made both baskets, giving us a 74-71 lead. Then Huntington made another basket. There were only seven seconds left and it looked like we were going to win, but Huntington stole the ball and made another basket. Lucky for us the basket was not counted because of offensive goaltending (or something like that). We won 74-73. I’ve never seen the Lancers so fired up! On Monday, students were intrigued with the address of Wesley G. Pippert, a United Press International reporter chosen to cover the Watergate incident. Indiana Lieutenant Governor Robert Orr was the featured speaker in the Tuesday chapel session. Wednesday’s chapel was filled by students chosen as winners in the composition, art, speech, and class decorations contests. A time of prayer for the nation was set aside during the Thurs¬ day chapel time. A musical salute was presented for the students on Friday morning. A special performance closed the week as the Kiwanis Travelogue “America, Of Thee I Sing,” narrated by Robert Brouwer, was shown on Friday evening. Visits by the choir included churches and schools in Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Vir¬ ginia, and Washington, D.C. The group has four main functions: to provide a spiritual ministry, to provide on-the-job training, to seek students who may want to enroll at Grace, and to gain financial support for the school. The fellowship among the members has also been a tremendous benefit to the group. As Professor Donald Ogden states, “It’s a hothouse for spiritual growth.” 82 Donald Ogden-Director, Alice Wallace, Kaye Miller, Nancy Emch, Glenn Cutler, Toni Kirby, Kay Johnson, MaryAnne Palumbo, Deb Anderson, Bob l-’oote, Jane Fretz, Nancy Moore, Dave Griffith, Susie Shade, Joy Teeter, Susie Thompson, Pam Green, Steve Dombek, Ron Misner, Gary Lapp, Rick Bonar, Judy Walters, Laura Shuler, Valerie Ganther, Jan Perryman, Linda Rosner, Ruth Keffer, Ron Herr, Phil Norris, Rod Forrester, Jan Brumbaugh, Jim Jenkins, Sue Kiebel, Neena Beegle, John Cake, Vicki Jones, Jim White, Bob Herr, Bob Wenger. 83 Dimensions In Brass During the spring break, “Dimensions In Brass” made their annual tour, this time to the South. The twenty-four member group presented the Gospel of Christ through music. The twenty-day tour included stops in Ohio, Washington (D.C.), Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and West Virginia. A less numerous group merely switched housing before summer school began. The minority of the student body members set out on one of the most difficult and growth producing twelve weeks of their experience as summer missionaries and on music teams. The “Spirit of Praise” marked the end of their two-year career together as school closed, while “His Followers” commenced a nine-week tour through the East. France was the destination of six eager summer missionaries: Pam Green, Sue Suter, Duane Cory, Dave Griffith, Bruce Robbins and Wayne Hannah, the team leader. Cheryl Holman, Bob Wenger and Elaine Heatwole headed for Stuttgart, Germany, to share a singing ministry and testimonies. These students have dedicated the largest portion of their summer vacation to summer service, but every student had opportunities constantly throughout vacation to share his vibrance and joy in living with those he met and learned to love. SPIRIT OF PRAISE. John Cake, Ruth Craig, Sue Kiebel, Daryle Emch, Joy Teeter (not shown) 95 Dear Mom and Dad, I just can’t believe it . . . only one more week! When I look back it seems like I’ve been at Grace a long time, but yet these past four years seem to have been the shortest. Remember all those times I almost gave up? All the term papers and studying? Now, it all seems worthwhile. I’m glad I could come to a Christian school that hasn’t lost its standards. I’m really afraid of what I’ll be doing after graduation, but you’ve always taught me to trust and have faith so I guess I won’t worry about it. Thanks for all your prayers during these years and the way you’ve encouraged me. Love, Penelope Dear Mom and Dad, This semester is student teaching. Up until now I’ve just been observing, but today was my first day to jump right in. This morning one of the little boys saw my class ring with ’74 on it and asked if I was 74 years old. Sometimes the kids are real brats, but when I see them actually learning something I’m teaching, it’s a good feeling. I’ve graded so many papers this past week that I’m starting to make mistakes. I didn’t realize how tiring student teaching can be—this is worse than the summer I worked two jobs. Lo ve, Penelope Dear Mom and Dad, Remember in the last letter I told you that Josh Armor asked me to the Junior-Senior banquet? I wanted to write and tell you about the good time we had. I calmed down some by the time he came, and we seemed to be able to find plenty to talk about on the way to Nappanee. The food was really great. Josh asked if he could take me to church Sunday . . . maybe this is the start of something? Freshman Nancy Miller reigned over “A Day in the Country.” One of the biggest attractions for the musclemen on campus was the old car. Other students took revenge on their friends by having them placed in the W.R.A. pig pen. Included among the special activities were the traditional barrel race, buck buck, and a pie-eating contest. G-Club sponsored a new innovation this year, the first annual Olympiad. Larry Grace, a freshman, outlasted his competitors to carry away the individual win, but the sophomore combination proved themselves to be the strongest pair competing. Certainly it is a record, but no record can be made without the ingredients of people, events, words, and pictures. The people include the staff, of course, but also the ones who live, move, and act on the campus. These are the ones who create the events that inspire the words and give birth to the pictures. In “doing all for the glory of God,” a lofty and worthy goal, the staff has learned that in life the unexpected must be expected and the failures must be compensated for with substitutions that can be useful. “Doing all to the glory of God” isn’t a simple platitude that works magic by itself. It takes hard work, long hours, and dis¬ appointments. But in the end, there’s satis¬ faction for those who stay with the job and can look with a mixture of Joy and relief on the finish ed product. 128 EdjJjo v-(nrcklef Kmn M(y(t Cop9 Editor Omjt SabCe and Acad£jm Editor Jint 5Ett j AdA Monfl G t C Git Kjamfi qj Tint Weit Editor Kmn Eiiig BuAinMA Mano Vam Kjennfidij TWtogftflpk Tint Klt Tint v2ett(j TddmL McuuAt Com Tint Kfinnfidy Admyv Anti V 4i0i;dj(Ht TIt£ ihuZags Stjotff tmlm to- o hiDwted tlifi potimst OMiAtonoe and m{)(um£tit of Aevmd IndMinJlA ut p iodacing tiuA w fo t6 .
