Finally, ’’that every person we encounter might recognize in us that quality which sets us apart as a unique people.” They will see us as unique if they can see that we are real, vibrant, and sensitive to the needs of others. It is evident that our goals must reach out and include our neighbors. The Bible says, ”He who seeks to separate himself seeks his own de¬ sire.” This relationship to other people is the most valuable thing we have next to knowing Christ. If our goals do not include it, we become spiritually lopsided and of no earthly good. Reaching out to others means meeting their needs, and meeting their needs means loving them, and love is what living is all about. If we develop this quality then they will see us as alive, as enthusiastic, and as individuals with depth — and without question will call us a unique people. Just remember that in your hands rest the unity and progress of this school. Whether you are a fresh¬ man without a major or a faculty member with a Ph.D., your decision will affect every other person sitting in this auditorium. I can only hope that you will align yourselves with the cause I have stated and as Paul wrote, Make it your aim to be at one in the Spirit ” for then, as God so wonderfully has promised, you will inevitably be at peace with one another.” Frank Gonzales: When God does something wonderful. He begins with a difficulty. When God want to do something really wonderful. He begins with an impossibility. What we need today is the same 20-20 vision” for souls that Paul had. The prescription is found in Acts 20:20. He kept back nothing that would be profit¬ able to the people, and he taught them, not only pub¬ licly, but also going from home to home. Rev. Rc bert Thompson: I think that to ask for the presence of God is the most ridiculous thing top-side of this earth. When I came in, God came in — how about you? we need to know that day by day, hour by hour, Jesus is walking with me, with you and don’t look for Jesus to be revealed to you by some little miracle. You’ll find him only as you open the pages of His book. Rev. Peter Pascoe: I’m tired of Christianity portrayed as fun and games. Christianity is blood, sweat, and tears, and the name of the game is obedience. Rev. William Fusco: You’ve trusted Christ for heaven; have you trusted Him for happiness? In Matthew 26:36-46 we find three reasons why the disciples slept, and Jesus didn’t. First, they didn’t recog¬ nize the urgency of the situation. Second, they didn’t remember the uniqueness of the Son of God. Finally, they didn’t resist the ugliness of self. How about it — are YOU sleeping? Rev. Knute Larson: We’re mistaken if we think there is a dichotomy between religious truth and truth truth. Ed Jackson: Happiness is the by-product that we discover we have as we walk along the road of duty. Rev. Richard Cannon: Going overseas doesn’t make you a missionary, but staying home doesn’t make you one either. Start finding out where you fit in, in a world that’s exploding today. I y 23
