“
HERITAGE ’73 It’s kinda funny really — trying to squeeze 652 lives and 254 days into only 164 pages. But this is 1973 — our 25th year — and we can do anything we set our mind to. Every face and event will be recorded for future generations to point to and laugh at. Dimensions in Yearbooks” — that’s what we’ll call it. But who’s kidding whom? Some of you won’t find yourself in here at all and probably your favorite memories will be stamped only on the pages of your mind. But don’t give up on this book. It’s diffe rent and it’s good, not perfect, only different and good. And I hope that in future years it will bring you as much pleasure and pain, tears and laughter as ’72-’73 did itself. Julie Kroes, Editor For the first time in its history the Heritage is dedicated to its subject matter 4 5 Dr. Hoyt, President of Grace College Apart from life, the most precious commodity in this world is time. It is that period during which life is permitted to express itself in the various activities and functions of spirit, soul, and body that make for personal achievement, social contribution, and divine adoration. It is that period when ail the facets of per¬ sonality have opportunity to sparkle with brilliance. It is that period when the mind has opportunity to probe the infinite reaches of knowledge and explore the yet unknown. It is that period when the human heart is privileged to make an investment in others, and to see the gladsome response of those who have derived untold benefit through that experience. It is that period of time when the human spirit, made alive by the Spirit of God, may rise to the illimitable heights of divine favor and fellowship, and catch a glimpse of heaven. How dare anyone murder time! And yet, that is the expression which is so often used, even by the best of people, when they find themselves caught at an inopportune moment. They are heard to say, I am killing time.” Is it possible that they are murdering that which it took the Divine Creator to bring into existence, upon which He looked and called it ”good?” Is it possible that anyone would dare murder that which is measured out to us in such a small quantity that the passing hours, the days, the months, and the years reach perchance the paltry sum of 70 years? Is it possible that those fleeting moments are actually re¬ garded to be of such little value that one would not hesitate to cast them away without a tear? Is it possible that this infinitesimal span of time could be regarded as so worthless, that we would refuse to use it for the acquisition and application of wisdom? If not, then teach us to number our days that we may apply our hearts to wisdom.” 6 College Administrative Committee VICE PRESIDENT Homer A. Kent, Jr. ACADEMIC DEAN E. William Male DEAN OF STUDENTS Arnold Kriegbaum SUMMER SCHOOL DIRECTOR Jesse Humberd REGISTRAR, ADMISSIONS DIRECTOR Ron Henry DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR Richard Messner BUSINESS MANAGER Paul Chappell 7 Americans for America Week The real democratic American idea is, not that every man shall be on a level with every other, but that every one shall have liberty, without hindrance, to be what God made him. 9 10 God was the first and the greatest artist. His creation was composed of material form, light, and line. Ever since the beginning of his life on earth, man has tried to copy and capture the essence of God’s creative power through art. 12 ’’Any great work of art is great because it creates a special world of its own ... it revives and readapts time and space . .. and the measure of its success is the extent to which it makes you an inhabitant ofthat world, the extent to which it invites you in and lets you breathe its strange, special air.” — Leonard Bernstein 13 Artist Series LAKELAND COMMUNITY CONCERTS: Armstrong and Vrenios Obernkirchen Children’s Choir Great Stars of Jazz Angus Godwin GRACE COLLEGE CAMPUS SERIES: Indianapolis Symphony Messiah Hale and Wilder Ft. Student Senate President Jon Hall Inaugural Address: It has been said, ”lf you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything.” There is no doubt in my mind that we must stand united under one cause. This is the most basic element necessary for the survival of any family, organization, or nation. In fact, an or¬ ganization can stand even if it isn’t for a worthy cause. But no matter who it is, no one, not even Satan him¬ self, can be plagued by disunity and expect to continue. Was not the first division of mankind the time when one man chose to go against that cause for which God had created him? And what was the result of that division? Adam, now, instead of being the prophet, priest, and king of the human race, is the father of a suffering and dejected world. Since that time, through¬ out all of history, man has continually divided himself — the Jews after King Solomon’s death, the Romans in the sixth century . even in our own country, the lives of over 500,000 men were lost, and the nation rent apart because the people could not unite under one cause. What then would be a worthy cause for us, one which would include all of us, whether we are a member of the Board of Trustees, the Administration, faculty, or student body? What would be that all inclusive cause? It can only be this: that each day we individually strive with an unquenchable desire to become that person which we have chosen to be, in order that, first, Jesus Christ might be glorified, and second, that every person we encounter might recognize in us that quality which sets us apart as a unique people. Let me break that statement down and discuss it, so you will understand exactly what I mean. First, ’’that each day we individually strive with an unquench¬ able desire.” This is the basic ingredient in being suc¬ cessful at anything. Each day must be viewed as another chance to get a little closer to our goals. If we take only one day and waste it on frivolous things, we will find it easier the next time to take two days, then three, and so on, until we have wasted not days, but weeks, months, years, maybe even our lifetimes. There¬ fore, we must see that what we accomplish today will affect us in the near and distant future either for good or for bad. We must also individually strive toward these goals. No one else is going to do it for us. Others may counsel us, may give us support and encour¬ agement, but it’s going to be your responsibility and mine, with God’s directing hand, to become as Paul says, men of mature character with the right sort of independence.” Most of all, we must strive with an unquenchable desire; apathy is a sure killer of any good cause. Proverbs states it in this manner: A little sleep, a little slumber A little folding of the hands to rest; Then your poverty will come as a robber. And your want like an armed man. Rather than being like this sluggard, we ought to have the drive that Vince Lombardi has spoken of so well in the statement, ”1 firmly believe that any man’s finest hour is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on th e field of battle — victorious.” The next part is this, to become that person which we have chosen to be in order that first Jesus Christ might be glorified.” It is absolutely necessary that we choose to be somebody, to have goals with meaning. What is important here is not what we will do as an occupation, but what we are made of inside. Without a vision the people perish,” and without a purpose for living there is no strength or desire to even exist. Some have called this the will to mean,” in other words, the will to have a meaningful existence. These goals must be made with the express purpose of first glorifying Christ. If they are made just to please our¬ selves, we will find that they satisfy no one, especially ourselves. It was Solomon, who after seeking and ob¬ taining every earthly desire, said, Vanity, vanity, all is vanity.” If the richest and wisest man in all history proclaims self-satisfaction as worthless, who are we to argue the point? Instead, if we let Christ direct our goals, there can only come love, joy, and personal peace. 22 Finally, ’’that every person we encounter might recognize in us that quality which sets us apart as a unique people.” They will see us as unique if they can see that we are real, vibrant, and sensitive to the needs of others. It is evident that our goals must reach out and include our neighbors. The Bible says, ”He who seeks to separate himself seeks his own de¬ sire.” This relationship to other people is the most valuable thing we have next to knowing Christ. If our goals do not include it, we become spiritually lopsided and of no earthly good. Reaching out to others means meeting their needs, and meeting their needs means loving them, and love is what living is all about. If we develop this quality then they will see us as alive, as enthusiastic, and as individuals with depth — and without question will call us a unique people. Just remember that in your hands rest the unity and progress of this school. Whether you are a fresh¬ man without a major or a faculty member with a Ph.D., your decision will affect every other person sitting in this auditorium. I can only hope that you will align yourselves with the cause I have stated and as Paul wrote, Make it your aim to be at one in the Spirit ” for then, as God so wonderfully has promised, you will inevitably be at peace with one another.” Frank Gonzales: When God does something wonderful. He begins with a difficulty. When God want to do something really wonderful. He begins with an impossibility. What we need today is the same 20-20 vision” for souls that Paul had. The prescription is found in Acts 20:20. He kept back nothing that would be profit¬ able to the people, and he taught them, not only pub¬ licly, but also going from home to home. Rev. Rc bert Thompson: I think that to ask for the presence of God is the most ridiculous thing top-side of this earth. When I came in, God came in — how about you? we need to know that day by day, hour by hour, Jesus is walking with me, with you and don’t look for Jesus to be revealed to you by some little miracle. You’ll find him only as you open the pages of His book. Rev. Peter Pascoe: I’m tired of Christianity portrayed as fun and games. Christianity is blood, sweat, and tears, and the name of the game is obedience. Rev. William Fusco: You’ve trusted Christ for heaven; have you trusted Him for happiness? In Matthew 26:36-46 we find three reasons why the disciples slept, and Jesus didn’t. First, they didn’t recog¬ nize the urgency of the situation. Second, they didn’t remember the uniqueness of the Son of God. Finally, they didn’t resist the ugliness of self. How about it — are YOU sleeping? Rev. Knute Larson: We’re mistaken if we think there is a dichotomy between religious truth and truth truth. Ed Jackson: Happiness is the by-product that we discover we have as we walk along the road of duty. Rev. Richard Cannon: Going overseas doesn’t make you a missionary, but staying home doesn’t make you one either. Start finding out where you fit in, in a world that’s exploding today.
