To their interest and support, necessary for the success of our many school activities, we owe our past achievements. Recognizing our indebtedness, we hope to make them proud of us in all our work, They have guided our lives from early childhood to our graduation days. They have taken pride in our successes and encouraged us in our failures, To them we owe, not only our accomplishments of the past, but what- ever successes we might achieve in the future. It is then, with all due gratitude, that we dedicate this Valley Bugle to our par- ents. Thou wert our parent, the nurse of our souls, We were molded to manhood by thee Till freighted with treasure thoughts, friendships, and hopes, Thou didst launch us on Destiny's sea. The class was kept at a minimum and the students advanced in a specific four year course of study. Cowanda Central , School now presents the first graduates of this program. 1 ff? 5 5 Laura Braymiller Ruth Bachert Mae Doolittle llarlan Henhawk Paul Philli S Mae Doolittle and Laura Braymiller check with Mrs. Saffer on P the Morning Bulletin. Auto- mobile mechanics is most popular with the boys followed by Welding, Trade Electricity, and Carpentry. Students attend Cowanda Cen- tral a half day for required academic courses and physical education. The other half day is spent in Little Valley in the vocational pro- gram. Row One: D. Parks. To that question, you'll find as many different answers as there are people. Let's take Tom and Mary, for instance. Do you realize it took a long time to become a senior? Yet he started out no differently than every other human being. Tom began as the baby who clung to his teddy bear and his parents night and day. Soon he took his first step, then another and another. Before long this toddler started to school. He was the one who never could learn to tie his shoes or to put those shoes on the right feet . . . memories which his mother cherishes to this day. As the future senior progressed, Tom was the patrol boy on the corner, and Mary the girl with pigtails, which Tom and every other boy tried to pull. Soon Tom entered junior high, and began to realize he was growing up. There were the first dances where girls huddled in giggling groups, and boys stood against the other wall, joking, and fooling around. Mary got her first valentine from an unknown admirer an began to develop crushes on upperclassmen. Time passes quickly. Mary and Tom entered the long awaited years of high school. As freshmen, they washed cars, sold candy, and worked at dinners to raise money for their class activities. Their sophomore year brought more parties, more dates and more homework. And soon they were ju- niors. Suddenly, they realized time was fleeting. Now, underclassmen began to admire and respect them. In the fall, came the Junior Carnival, and what acamival it was! With hundreds of gold fish, bal- loons, and yards and yards ofcrepe paper, the gym rang with fun andlaughter. Spring came and it was Junior Prom time. A SENIOR 3 iff P Weeks ahead, the Juniors started to make the dec- orations. The girls made flowers and the boys helped with the carpentry. Every girl hoped to be asked to this, one of the major events of her high school life. With the help of every Junior. the cafeteria was transferred into a garden of paradise. Suddenly Tom and Mary were Seniors. A senior is a being who looks like an adult yet often acts like an over grown child. He is determined to make the E' most of every minute of his senior year. He loves to goof around, get in trouble, and dares to play cards in the lunchroom. A senior is aware of class spirit and is proud of the fact that he is a senior. He gets furious when an under- classmen infringes upon his senior privileges. He is judged by others according to actions and achievements. Underclassmen envy him more than ever, as they watch him making plans for the future. Whether he plans to attend college, take a job, or enter the service, every senior is a tiny bit afraid of the adult world where he must take his place. All too quickly, his last year of school is coming to an end. Plans for graduation are completed. The yearbooks arrive. Every senior begins to reminisce. Final exams come all too quickly. Everyone waits apprehensively for the grades to he posted . . . At practice for graduation, everyone tries out their caps and gowns. Finally that day which we had awaited for twelve years is here. The bleachers at Hillis Field are filled with parents, teachers, and friends. A hush comes over the crowd as seniors come on the field. Dressed in blue and white., each graduate proudly and Q solemnly accepts his diploma. Every parent has a tear in his ii eye, a tear that expresses love and pride for some special E I A' senior in blue and white. The reigning queen, Lizza Buckley, crowned Valorie Huff the new Prom queen. Members of Valorie's court were Susan Carr, Melinda Klancer, Debra Marrano, Mary Ann Mecca, Susan Scott, and Lynn Wagen- blatt. UNIOR CLASS Intra-activity cooperation spelled success for the joint program presented by the Junior Class and the Senior Chorus. The Junior Class working with the ladies of the Eastem Star put on a tasty buffet prior to the Christmas Concert and thereby helped to draw a full house which benefited both groups. Plans for the coming Junior Prom are underway with the Decoration and Entertain- ment Committees already formed. Tentative plans for a class party are still in the discussion stage. lt is hoped that the intra-activity cooperation precedent set by the Class of 1969 is continued by succeeding classes. 1 s How One: K. CARDS W l'nder the able leadership of Brian Hubbard, the Senior High Student Council continued to give C.C.S. students a greater voice in school activities. The new I.D. card system which the council instituted, brought about more extra-curricular activities. ln February, the council sponsored a Sno Carnival in the afternoon with a snow-sculpturing contest between classes and clubs followed by a dance at night. The council has the authority to grant permission to organizations sponsoring an activity, to supervise auditorium seating, and to support a South Vietnamese orphan. For a money making project, the council helped take and distribute school pictures. R. Fort, T. Newcomb, B. llubbard, F. White, J. Scott, J. Westendorf. Absent: R. Story, M. West- lund, T. The second semester Mr. Duncan had a select chorus of 50 as well as the regular chorus of about 95. March 22 and 23 Cowanda hosted the Chattaraugus County Music Festival with some 300 selected students in junior Band, Senior Band, and Senior Chorus. The Student Herald is one of the less fun co- curricular activities at G.C.S. as any of the people on the staff will tell you. A school newspaper involves a great deal of work in writing, editing, typing, and pasting-up the copy. This work often takes place until all hours of the night. However, it is well worth it. There are few pleasures greater than the thrill one gets at seeing his own words in print and there is great satis- faction to be derived from the various awards and com- mendations which the Student Herald has received. Also, there are the rewards received from the team effort that is necessary on any newspaper staff. SCIENCE CLUB How One: A. Spina, K. Hammer, Nl. Rohrich, U. Glea son. Row Two: D. llegenfelder, W. Rounding out the team were juniors Jim McCarl, Dave Spencer, sophomores Steve Spencer, Rex Bobsein and John McCarlg freshman John Harvey. The team participated in meets with Springville, Clarence, Fredonia, Randolph, Pine Valley, Falconer, South- western and Forestville. Along with these teams the Cowanda harriers ran in the county and sectional meets in early No- vember. This fall sport is an excellent conditioner for all other sports. We are hoping for an expanded program and schedule for next year that would include a JV team. VARSITY FOOTBALL i-4.-...,.4..4a...., . Row One: D. Erickson, J. Vogtli, T. Cain, C. Meyers, R. Fort, B. Two other seniors, Ron Fort and Cary Meyers and George Nelson, a junior, received honorable mention for the All-Star team. To the spectator, the Friday night game is the most im- portant event on the Football calendar. To those who have shed blood, sweat, and tears,', football means other things, like giving up autumn aftemoons for hours of practice-- rain or shine, leaming signals and plays as complicated as the solution to a geometry problem, being too physically and mentally exhausted to enjoy supper, giving up sweets and limiting social life to get the necessary hours of sleep. FOB ALL-STAR TEAM sacrifices develop character whereby it can truly be said that football makes a man, and the playing field can be proof of that manhood. Exciting highlights this season were Ron Fort's intercep tion in the Fredonia gameg Stan Jimerson's broken field run ning in the Southwestern game, the first eight minutes of the Salamanca game, George Nelson's passing in the Eisenhow- er game, and Cary Meyeris touchdown runs on our 143 re- VCTSE. Although the Panthers won two and lost six, they did have the spirit, desire, and detemiination to give the game their all-qualities of which any athlete can be proud. VARSITY BASKETBALL Row One: S. While working with a young team, eight Juniors and four Seniors, Coach Rogan is looking forward to a more prosperous season next year as the competition changes from the Lake Shore League to the Erie County competition. MATMEN PLACE SECOND IN SOUTHERN TIER The Gowanda Matmen got off to a good start this sea- son by winning the Holiday Tournament at Randolph and then going on to win ten consecutive dual meets before los- ing to an undefeated Southwestern team. Compiling a record of eleven wins and three defeats, the matmen placed second in the Southern Tier Wrestling Conference. In the Section Six Tournament held at Southwestern, the team finished in fifth place with thirteen teams in competition. Howard Parish and Paul Phillips brought their wrestling careers to a close this season after wrestling for Gowanda for four years. Howie leaves behind an impressive record as Sec- tional champ in 1966 and 1968, Holiday Tournament champ 1968, and was undefeated in his weight class this sea- son. His overall record in dual meets stands at 38 wins, five losses and one draw. He has an opportunity, at this writing, to represent Cowanda in the State Finals in Syracuse. Paul Phillips was Sectional champ in 1967 and placed second in 1968. He too was a Holiday Tournament cham- pion this season. Paul's overall record in dual meets was 39 wins, three losses and one draw. BOWLING TEAM The C.C.S. Bowling team will try to repeat as winners of the Class A sec- tionals this year. Last years team failed to win an individual match, but at llam- burg's Leisure Land the team came through with the upset of the year by defeating all of the class A schools and brought home the sectional crown. A. Strauss, H. Yezek, M. Andzel, T. Snyder, G. Meyers, B. Putney, J. Harris, Mr. Conrad, Coach. GOLF TEAM The Gowanda Central golf team had another suc- cessful season as they sported a won five, lost one and tied one record. ln addition, they finished third out of a field of eleven in the Chautauqua County play-off. Mike Leafs score in the Section VI play-offs qualified him to compete in the Inter-sectionals at Beaver Island. With four returning squad members, the outlook is good for the coming year. The 1967 Varsity Baseball Team playing in the Lake- shore Baseball League for the second year compiled a 7 won 7 lost record. The team consisted of six seniors, three juniors, four sophomores, and one freshman. Captain Ed Paprocki led the team in hitting with a .333 average. The pitching staff was young and all are returning for the 1968 season. Pitchers Tom Newcomb and Frank Seneca did most of the pitching and were ably supported by Cary Meyers and Larry Williams. Gowand's 12 to 1 win over flattaraugus and a 10 to 4- win over Eden were the high scoring games of the season. Also the 4 to 2 wins over Southwestern and Salamanca and 4 to 3 wins over Fal- coner and Southwestern were the exciting games of the season. With some good talent coming up from the J.V. team and with the returning letterman the prospects for 1968 look bright.
