And they're olll From the word go the Valley Bugle stafl' was hard at work to produce not only the biggest yearbook GCS has ever seen, but also the finest. Many ideas and suggestions Went into the production of this book, some new, some old. We not only tried to have the book ready for earlier distribution, but we also produced a book that we feel is unique. It has been changed from cover to cover. This year a new cover was especially designed by the art staff, incorporating the senior crest with the sehool colors. Also more space was devoted to sports and activities, a very important part of the well-rounded education we received at GCS. The theme, Kiddie Kars to Hot Rodsf, was selected because of the transition it showsg a change or development from a thing of simplicity to one of complex parts and mechanisms. In this same manner we pro- gressed through school. From kindergarten, where we learned to play together, to high school, where our knowledge has been greatly increased and where we are now able to work together in the community and the nation. Now that our work draws to a close we wish to extend special gratitude to Mr. Daniel O'Day and Mrs. Marianna VVonnacott, without whose able assistance and advice, the production of this, the Valley Bugle of 1958, could not have been possible. W,ithoL1t our class advisors we would not have been successful in our many class projects. Because our advisors have helped us with unfailing effort, we, the Class of 1958, dedicate our yearbook to Mrs. Estelle Simon, and Mr. Robert Patrick. 'l'his was the first year that our athletic depart- ment received full advantage of our new school's facilities. The Panther teams often carried oll' the banner of victory in co111- petition with other schools. Our intramural program. which ollered activities to a vast number of students. grew in botl1 scope and popularity. Our new gym saw many firsts this year. It was tl1e scene of many exciting home basketball games and wrestling matches. Under its roof tht- student body participated in a 111uch-improved gym program. It offered full facilities for both boys and girls for the first time in Cowanda's history. lN'ith many pieces of new l equipment the students received the fundamentals of gymnastic That perfect 3U0? training. Our fine gym was also selected as the site of tl1e Section VI A-l5-C- wrestling tournament. Our swimming pool was the center of much enjoyment. Here 111any students learned to swim, while others advanced their knowledge of swimming techniques and 1Ill'll'lOClS. The coimnunity as well as G.C.S. students reaped the rewards of this fine pool. A rifle club was formed and a beautiful new rifle range completed. The wrestling team soon discovered the many advantages of its own practice and locker rooms. All these events came to pass in the inaugural year of our new school. Inter-school competition found Panther teams compiling a reputable record. Our fine bowling team again captured the Section VI title this year. 'l'he wrestling squad enjoyed an excellent season and finished second in the Section VI Class A division. Uur basketball team tied for second in the Chautauqua County Class A l,ake Shore l.eague. The baseball team was second in the Cattaraugus County Class A League. Meanwhile the track team placed fourth in the Section VI meet. 'l'he intramural program was directed by Mr. Howard Hillis and Miss Geraldine Plumcr. llue to the unfinished landscaping around the new school certain intramural sports were temporarily dropped. However. students strongly supported the intramural basketball. wrestling. and bowling programs. lVhen facilities permit Cowanda students may look to a much more varied intramural schedule. 'l'hus concludes another chapter in the history of Gowanda sports, one marked with many memorable events and honors. lVe, the seniors. take pride that we have contributed to GCS's heritage of clean sportsmanship and victory, We sincerely hope that you of the succeeding classes will carry on this tradition with distinction and forever keep it shining brightly, Willa 'Hu Action is about to commence in our spacious 11ew gym 80 mv af, Mn ,E ,Iv VK X Q 1? m . Iohengen The junior varsity team ended another season filled with many fine experiences, This year,s team was cen- tered mainly around freshmen. Although the JV,s lost all five of their games, they led in several games the majority of the time. The squad always played its best brand of ball in the first half. Often the team would put together a fine combina- tion of plays only to have them nullified by a penalty. This penalty jinx also accounted for the calling back of several touchdowns. The jV's started the season by being soundly beaten by the newly-organized varsity team of Delevan- Machias. The record of this team does not reflect all the values which the team gained. Records only reflect the meeting of two schools on a given day. A true picture of this team may be gained by examining the values the individual players received. One of these was team work. The boys learned to work together as a unit and not as individuals. The most important attribute they gained was that of experience. This year's JV's will comprise much of next year's varsity, since many of the '58 team will graduate. No fewer than 9 -IV's were promoted to the varsity squad before the season ended. Three games were lost in overtime with one of these being in double overtime. The never say die motto certainly applied to our Varsity team. After losing its first six games, the squad finished the season winning eight of the twelve remaining games for an 8 and 10 record, 'l'he team's slow start was reflected in its Lakeshore League standings. Nonetheless, Gowanda finished tied for third in the overall league, and tied for second in the Class A division. In both games with league champion Jamestown, Gowanda led most of the way, but our upset hopes were smashed both times by -Iamestown's fourth period rallies. Perhaps the greatest victory was the -H-38 upset of previously unbeaten Springville on the home court. Next to it ranked the 53-49 conquest of Olean. an AAA school. This was the first time Gowanda had beaten Olean in seven years. Eight players shared most of the action. These were: seniors Jerry Saffer, Eddie Christopher. .Iohn Graves, Sid 'l'hompson, Roger Halftown. john Dayton. and sophomore Archie -Iimerson. For the second straight year. Roger Halftown was named to the Lakeshore All-Star team. An honorable mention was given to Archie lliinerson. lleartbreakinlf losses were to S l'll1f Ylllt' Silver Creek Southwestern, and Dunkirk. The first two were 5 5 ' . I . . . lost in overtime, and the Southwestern game was decided in the second period of overtime. lhe Dunkirk game was lost by two foul shots in the closing seconds. After losing the first 6 games, the .IV basketeers improved rapidly as they won 8 of their remaining 12 en- counters, including 5 of the last 6. Most of the action was seen by the following five players: Danny Robbins, Bruce YN'aterman, liob Armstrong. Doug Dayton, and Art Palumbo. The 102lIll,S high scorer was Bruce lN'aterman with 193 points. He was closely followed by Danny Robbins who netted 191 points. Two of the most exciting games were the Falconer and Dunkirk encounters. The game at Falconer see-sawed back and forth and finally went into over-time before the Panthers won. The home game with Dunkirk was seemingly lost when baskets by Wlaterman and Palumbo in the closing seconds snatched the victory for Gowanda. Anyone who followed our .IV's this year could not help but notice how the team improved as the season progressed. These boys gained invaluable experience this year and should help form a strong varsity in the future. A squad of eight students, of whom three were veterans, formed our team. A major step in this drive was taken when the Panthers downed Portville, P the 1957 Section VI Cross-Country champions, 42 to 50 in a tri-school meet. The next stepping stone was our 27 to 28 victory over a large and excellent Spring- ville team. ' 'ik , lla, - J .ae The flu epidemic, which wiped out over half of the schedule, became yet another obstacle in our campaign to revive cross-country. The eight members of the team were: Carl Brooks, Donald Brooks, Michael Cannon, Charles Kennedy, Charlemagne Poodry, Elliot Tallchief, Raymond Tallchief, and Sydney Thompson. This team was under the direction of Mr. Vincent Karnath. Although the team didn't add any trophies to our case, it did very well considering its size and .its other difliculties. One of its greatest accomplishments was that the team stimulated interest in cross-country at Gowanda. We are positive that there will be a better turn-out of runners next season. Furthermore GCS will make rapid strides to regain the Section VI Class A championship which it once controlled. Tennis With the opening of the spring sports a tennis team under the direction of Mr. Schumacker was added to the roster of GCS sports, The members practiced everyday on the courts at the old school. Five of the best players were Stuart Tarbox, J-.9 Mike Blawat, james Colburn, Peter Krakowiak, and John Rozek. . .L 5152-51' After several weeks of practice the team had two matches with a powerful . Springville team. Gowanda lost both meets by very close and heartbreaking scores. ' Drills continued daily and then the team traveled to Jamestown for the Section VI tournament. Here they were very impressive as they placed second in the Class A division. Q Q Although Gowanda's team was not entirely successful, it did well considering O that tennis is a long established sport in many of our neighboring Western New York schools. The construction of tennis courts at the new school is still a debatable and unsettled issue. Tennis offers to you a definite challenge, for it is an individual's game. This sport is presently on a major scale in thousands of American high schools. Through the co-operation and support of both students and faculty tennis can and will be successful at Gowanda. 93 .1, Track .am -N' First Row: V. Marrano. C. DeOca. M, Storv. B. Williams. R. Nephew. The team was at its peak during the Falconer and Silver Creek encounters. The Panthers met still' competition throughout the year. but they performed superbly. The most exciting meet was with Southwestern when the final event decided the winner of the match. The team was paced by Dave Evans and Dick Nephew. Dave turned in a new record for the half mile in the Southwestern Conference. Dick was beaten only once all season in the pole vault, reaching his best height of ll ft, 3 in. at Sprint:- ville. Two other outstanding performers were .lack Spring and Cliff lJeOca. Its outstanding points were its fine base running and its excellent fielding. The time compiled a record of seven wins against four defeats. Gowanda finished second in the Cattaraugus County Class A league. The team was composed of the following lettermen: Phil Saglimben, Robert Gold, Dave Robbins, Jerry Salfer and Roger Halftown. Newcomers in the lineup were George Smith, Richard Nephew. -Iim Parker and .Iohn LaValle. A completely new pitching stall. consisting of Ronnie Foster, Clement Stevens, Ken Steklasa and john Dayton. was developed. Foster paced the stall' with five victories while Stevens and Saglimben each registered a single win, .SQ X The l958 team will center around many experienced players. I8 Intramurals GIRLS' BOWLING Monday afternoons found Don's Bowling Alleys invaded by a eager group of bowlers. Usually about 35 girls participated in this program. Some of the top keglers were: Carol Parsons, Judy Sciera, Joyce Smith and Beverly Hausser. Often the top girl bowlers registered better scores than some of the boys. From this intra- mural program may come a girls, bowling team for G.C.S. Carol Parsons 115 Judie Sciera 110 Joyce Smith 110 Beverly Hausser 107 BOYS' WRESTLING In late March a wrestling tournament was held. There were about sixty boys who engaged in this program. There were preliminary, semifinals, and final rounds in this competition. The various matches were held eighth periods. Boys were allowed to go to the gym fifth periods and practice. Some of the high school winners were: Norm Staffin, Mike Gannon, John Ross, Clif DeOca, and Dave Evans. There were also several winners in the seventh and eighth grade groups. This activity is always very popular in the intramural program. and it will probably become a more important part of it as the years progress. APPRECIATION AND CLOSING VVe feel that a great deal of credit should be given to Mr. Hillis and Miss Plumer for their fine services. Not only do they conduct a fine gym program, but they also supervise a large number of high school intra- murals. The intramural program of G.G.S. offers recreation for a great percentage of our students. Wlhen the grass and grounds around the new school are in better condition, intramural softball and foot- ball will be resumed. A great upswing in participation should follow, once our intramural program adjusts from the switching of schools. Intramurals are not for the glory seekers, but rather they are a means by which high school students are kept physically fit. Also they give a student the feel of competition and the knowledge of team work. Let us close this intramural record by once again expressing our appreciation to our gym teachers. It is only through their time, service, and knowledge that our fine intramural program can successfully exist. Shall we take a dip? 99 W XX QWUMQQJEEQ .Q aa 'f 4. 13, VL, 2 , 01' Ik ff.
