Valley Bugle l'RliSIiN'I'lilJ m' THE CLASS OF 1953 GOWANIJA HIGH SCHOOL GOXYANIJA. NEW' YORK Preface The preparation and publication of the VALLEY BIQGLE is at once both a pleasant and a sad undertaking for us, the Senior Class of 1953. Pleasant, because it brings to mind all the events of the past four years. which are to become our most precious memories: sad. because it means saying goodbye to those happy times and good friends, to the patient and long-suffering teachers who strove so valiantly to enlighten our clouded minds. We of the VALLEY BUGLE staff have decided upon 'sFeudalism for our theme because it provides an artistic and attractive background for our high school days. Like the serfs of that period who gradually worked their way upwards out of bondage, so do we progress out of our Dark Age as junior high students until that moment when, as Seniors, we reach our goal as graduates. The serfs of feudal times had to overcome the most difficult obstacles and adverse conditions in their upward climb towards freedom and knowledge. Fortunately for us today, our progress is limited only by our own desires and ambition. To aid us in our struggle we have our King's Council, represented by our Board of Education, who plan, direct and decide for the common good of all. Our able King and his Minister, Mr. Donald VVing and Mr. Lawrence Scura, guide us justly and well. Our most wise Royal Philosopher, Mr. Sidney Frost, advises us in our choice of courses and subjects. The Dukes and Duchesses, represented by our competent faculty, strive valiantly to instill in our minds that knowledge which will best benefit us in our chosen careers. To them we say. Thank you. IVe especially wish to acknowledge the splendid guidance and assist- ance of Ml's. Lydia Sever, Miss Inez Shippen and Mrs. Marianna YVonnacott, without which it would have been next to impossible to bring this VALLEY BUGLE to you. ' King's Counselors The Board of Education is a group of local citizens who give a great deal of their time to the problems which arise monthly at Gowanda High School. Members of the Board are elected by popular vote of the school district. This past year Ralph Schaack, jr., was elected to complete the term of H. Sinclair Gannon, which expires this year. The Board has many responsibilities, such as acting as an intermediary for the school and the State Education Department. The selection of a principal and ol' teachers is also an important task for the Board. They do all this and more to guide us on our road to learning. Students and Board members do not often come in close contact with one another, but we realize that without them our school would soon fail to function. We, the Senior Class, appreciate this opportunity to express our gratitude to the Board of Education for their capable management and sincere interest in our education. aN 1 Y' al BOARD OF EDUCATION lst row: Mrs. Voncina. Mr. Hollenbeek. M. Peters Historical anuscript Whew! lVe finally made it, although we never thought we would. After four long years of hard work we finally reached our goal. As Freshmen we elected Miss Plumer and Mr. Hollenbeck as our class advisors. Our class officers were: President, jane Graves: Vice President, Andrew Musacchiog Treasurer, Rodney Gurney: and Secretary, jean Riflle. We established a system of dues which we carried on during our four years. As our projects. we had a spaghetti supper, a magician show and a bake sale. The closing of school was cele- brated by a trip to Crystal Beach. After a long summer vacation, we came back to school as Sophomores. Our officers were: Presi- dent, Robert Demcryg Vice President, Robert Hillg Treasurer, Rodney Gurney, and Secretary. Marilyn Larson. Our activities this year included a fish dinner, Sophomore Hop and a bake sale. Again we ventured to Crystal Beach at the closing of school. We're juniors, just think of it! Only one more year to go! Our officers this year were: President, Robert Hill, Vice President, Margaret Van Slyke, Treasurer, Andrew Musacchiog and Secretary, Su- zanne Leiker. The spotlight of this year was our junior Prom, with Margaret Van Slyke reigning as queen. To raise our financial status, we sponsored the selling of Christmas cards, had a fish dinner, and a Sadie Hawkins Day dance, in addition to another bake sale. Seniors at last! A raging campaign resulted in the election of these officers: President, NVilliam Allen: Vice President, Mary Westlundg Treasurer, Melvin Peters, and Secretary, Roberta Howard. XVe started the year off with a bang by selling Christmas wrapping paper and magazines. lVe held a Christ- mas dance, g'The Holiday Whirl, during the Christmas vacation. The Senior play, RESERVE TWO FOR MURDER, was a big success because we all worked so hard on it. The peak of our senior year was, of course, our trip to lVashington, D. C. l'Ve had looked forward to it for four years, and with the help of Miss Plumer and Mr. Hollenbeck our goal was achieved. lt seems only yesterday that we could hardly wait to be Seniors. Now we wish the time had not passed so quickly. We have other reasons for organizing into a club. explains Mr. Ernest Kionke. the enthusiastic and able advisor ol' the Junior Highlighters Club, such as promoting social activities for the junior High, and to band the same group into an organization which will function as a loyal and unified group. proud to be members of Gowanda High. Mr. Kionke adds that all activities of a social nature are designed solely with junior High people in mind. 'l'he junior Highlighters Club was formed in 1951 with Mr. Kionke as advisor. This year the club boasts of nearly sixty members from the seventh and eighth grades. Officers elected this year are as follows: President. Robert Gold: Vice President. Bonnie Rupp: Secretary, Jane Timms: Treasurer. Rozanne Stoll: and Sergeant-at-Arms. Mary Lou Mattson. Members pay five cents dues per meeting and buy membership cards which cost ten cents. Members are not permitted to attend a meeting or go to a Highlighters dance without a membership card. The Junior Highlighters may very well be proud of their club and of the part they play in keeping GHS rolling. 61 The .lesters lsr you j, l5cnc.1. O. Kumpt. 'l'hoitl.lhl. ll.iss.1ll, N. The team lost several close heart breakers throughout the season, but they forged ahead to defeat rivals Jamestown and Dunkirk. Under the very capable leadership of Coach Harold Hollenbeck, the Panthers ended the season in a tie for fourth place in the Lake Shore League with a total of 7 wins and ll losses. Although the team had a poor season its morale and pride remained high all through the season. Next year's Panthers will have a big loss to cover up as they are losing four seniors who played a lot of good ball this past season. They are Bill Allen, Ray Andolsek, jim Bufton and Dick Gilray. Among these four is captain Ray Andolsek who helped Coach Hollenbeck immensely in leading the team. There will be a loss in the scoring of Bill Allen, who set a new Lake Shore League record, and the defensive play of Dick Gilray and Jim Bufton. The other members of the team who deserve a lot of credit are Lou Gabel, Bob Grudzien, Ted Smith, Luman Dial and Don Gilray. All the members of the team are very im- portant in winning a game because teamwork is needed to win and no one player can make or break a team. The baby Panthers, under a new but a very experienced coach, Mr. Sam Rotella, seemed to meet the same bad luck that the Varsity met. They pulled through at the end of the season to prove their worth when they beat Fredonia in one of the best home games of the season. They ended up with a record of 2 and 16, but we expect to see a lot of them on the varsity next year.
