We all left our jobs an' come back t' school So's we wouldnt grow up on th' dunee's stool. October I2 wu: our furst day off. So to C. Columbus our hats we doff. Our Thanksgiving vacation, as l r'member, Come on the 26 an' 27 of ol' November. Right about this time it wuz, I guess, Wlien our squirt guns were makin' such a mess: An' go-yos were the current fad- Anythin' to make the teachers mad. Fer Christmus vacation we had 12 daze: Bein' good around Christmus REELY pays! Regents week wu: fun fer some, But left others feelin' kinda numb. About then they started rationin' ham An' some of us were hearin' frum Uncle Sam. Then we heard on th' radio That school was closed on accounta snow. To George Wasliington respects we pay Becu: of him we got off a day, April 2nd ivu: the V-12 test On most o' them questions 1 jest guessed. Five an' a half daze fer Easter we had, We wu: lucky th' weather ivu::n't too bad. lV1emorialDai1 rome th' last o' Mail, By then Hitler and Toio had begun to pay. In th' middle of lime we had regents again: We sure burnt th' midnite oil 'round then. We conducted our senior activities under the leadership of Victor Witherell, president: Irvine Iohnston, secretary: lohn Eggen, treasurer: and Mr. Leland Seifert, class adviser. A success- ful magazine campaign was conducted during October and November. On December ll. 1942, we held the senior dance in the gym in honor of the football team. The Senior Play. Mrs, Miniveru, presented on March 26 and 27, was considered one of the best in the history of the school. As officers in our junior year we chose Victor Witherell, president: Arnold Samuelson, vice-presi- dent: Sue Faucher, secretary-treasurer: Mr. Wesley Harris. class adviser. With victory uppermost in the minds of the American people. we overthrew precedent and crowned a Victory Queen at our Iunior Prom, held on May 15, 1942. As our farewell gesture to the seniors we were their hosts for the annual junior-senior picnic at Crystal Beach. We were deeply saddened by the death of our beloved classmate, Robert Markham, in the middle of our sophomore year. We were skippered at that period by William Sheehan, president: Albert Demmerle, vice-president: Sue Faucher, secretary-treasurer. We entered into this new phase of life under the direction of Iohn Witherell, president: Doyle Van Cise. vice-president: Irvine Iohnston, secretary-treasurer. ll?l yi. . Huxx l1u111v111.1k11111 It 41' 1 The SCHOOL at WORK Amidst point rationing, loss of pleasure driving and the constant need of employees, the student body of Gowanda High School has been able to come out on top. Because of the manpower shortage in Gowanda, the cooperative Retail Selling course has had a special war job to do. The cooperative part-time students taking Retail Selling and Introduction to Business have been placed as usual in local stores in order to gain practical experience and regents credit. In addition, many calls had been received by Mr. Frick from local businessmen seeking stu- dents to take the places of workers who had entered the armed forces, or who had left to work in war plants. The achievement we are most proud of is our weekly purchase of war bonds and stamps. To date fMay 13l that purchase has amounted to 517,687.70 With the beginning of the second war loan enough bonds and stamps were bought in one day, with the aid of the Victory concert sponsored by Mr. Braman, to purchase a plane. Senior high girls have mastered the art of home nursing in a ten week course taught by Miss Morrell, As the shortage of nurses is apparent, this will be a great advantage in many of our homes. A group of girls organized a Red Cross unit to participate in making useful objects to help those in need of them in these times. These included scrapbooks for soldiers, knitted squares for afghans and colorful holiday place cards for the N. Adam Hospital. At the present they are engaged in collecting money for the purchase of extra snack packs for soldiers. During the year the boys in the Industrial Arts course have been taught basic knowledge of ma- chine shop practice for future use. They have also made model airplanes which will be turned into the Navy at the end of the year. Since May l94l pre-employment machine shop training has been given in the evenings to anyone in the vicinity who desired it. Approximately l70 students, including the choir, participated. It consisted of ten incidents in American history which have been part of our education for victory, concluding with an impressive linnle, a tribute to our allies. In response to popular demand, the performance was repeated on Friday evening, May 7, as the second of our Victory program, sponsoring the sale of war bonds and stamps.
