Williamson By TVIURRAY S. BTUNROE Although the Governors won only one football game in a season which included four losses and two ties, every member of the squad displayed a desire to learn and was willing to work. The team as a whole had a very commendable spirit, and put forth its best efforts during practice. Mr. Sager and his assistants. hir. Nlurphy and Mr. Vorey, had only four returning lettermen, Captain Dick VVil- liamson, llhil Sawyer, llob Tannebring, and Cy Savage, as a nucleus around which could be built a team for the com- ing campaign. The coaches set to work, and in three weeks ol' practice put to- gether a starting team for the llliddlesex game on October 10. The team opened the season in a very promising manner, turning back Mitltlle- sex nineteen to nothing. Although the superiority ol' the Governors was evident throughout the first half, it was not until late in the third period that they were able to score. However, the Red and White increased its lead by adding two more touchdowns in the final quarter to clinch the victory. ln the second game, on the following Saturday, t.he Governors were defeated by a strong Kimball Union team, twenty- six to twelve. Almost the entire game was played in the opposition's territory, as the Governors rolled up eleven first downs against Kimball Union's five. However, Herb Carey of K.U.A., without a doubt the best back the Governors faced all season, broke away on three long touchdown Sprints and passed forty-five yards for their fourth and final score. On October 24- the Governors went down under a twelve to nothing defeat at the hands of Miltoli Academy. Injuries forced Captain Williamson and Bob Sewell to the side-lines early in the game. Miltoii, which was undefeated through- out the season, scored in the first period and the last on successive short drives through the line. This game marked the final appearance on the coaching staff of Mr. Nelson Corey, now an ensign in the U. S. Navy. The team lost a hard-fought battle to Thayer Academy in the fourth game of the season. The Governors threatened to score on numerous occasions, but except in two instances were turned back short of the goal. The first score for the Red and White came on a drive in the first period: however, Thayer countered in the third period with a touchdown pass to tie the score. The second Governor Dummer tally was set up by Bots Young on a beautiful fake after a Thayer punt. Again Thayer knotted the score at twelve to twelve on another completed pass deep in the Governors' territory, and finally pushetl the hall over in the elosing min- utes ol' the gznne to win nineteen to twelve. The opening game. with An- dover, was a one to one tie. Pete htlorgan scoring the only Governors' goal. Probably the most successful game of the season was the t02LII'l,S three-to-one victory over the Harvard Freshmen. the first victory over the Vrimson in a number ol' years. lt was a contest in which the Governors controlled the play during most of the afternoon, continually forcing the Ilarvard team to the defensive. Vap- tain llal Leinbach opened the scoring in the second period, and Ed Breckenridge tallied a few minutes later, thereby giving the Red and VVhite an advantage which they never relinquished. Breckenridge scored the third and final goal in the last period to insure victory. Humphrey Sim- son and Dick Yeasey both turned in ex- cellent games, although the team as a whole showed considerable ability and spirit. The following game, a one-to-one tie with Kimball Union, was in reality a battle between the opposing goalies, with Dick Yeasey again giving an outstanding performance in the cage. Jack Collins scored the lone Red and White tally in the last minute of the overtime period, and the score remained tied to the final whistle. Brooks School and Tabor Acad- emy succumbed to the Governor Dum- mer hooters with scores of two to one and three to nothing respectively, but the fifth game, with Phillips Exeter Academy, marked the first loss of the season, three to nothing. The final game of the season was with the championship hledford High School af Captain Harold O. Leinbacll team. Sam W'angh scored the first goal of the game in the second period, and the Governors held to this slim advantage until late in the final period, when lNIed- ford came from behind and tied the score at one to one. The game went. into over- timeg and with less than a minute re- maining, the hledford club tallied again to put them ahead two to one. a margin they held for the remaining seconds. This proved to be the most exciting and well- played game of the season, and one in which every player turned in a commend- able performance. Special mention should however be given to goalie Yeasey, hall'- baeks Simson and Leinbach, and forwards Breckenridge and Kelly. Hank Kelly was one of the most consistent players during the season, centering the ball with con- siderable aceuracy from his wing position. At the close of the season Foach Navins announced that next year's eleven will be eaptained by Ed Breckenridge. The Hockey Team Gleoaulc F. VVISVVALL Handicapped throughout the season by irregular practice resulting from warm weather and lack of ice, the Governor Dummer hockey team completed its schedule with the unimpressive record of one victory and four defeats. This year the team was again fortunate in being able to participate in the Private School llockey Conference held at the Boston Skating Ulub during the latter part of the Fhristmas vacation. This pre- season conference was not entirely suc- cessful from the standpoint of wins and losses, but the experience gained by all the boys who played was valuable to them individually and to the team as a whole. The team was defeated by Saint Marks Miltoii, and Andover, but the opportunity of playing under such ideal conditions compensated somewhat for the losses. The outstanding goal-tending of Jim Munro was one of the high points of the conference, since his play was noted with approval by many authorities who were present. In the opening game of the regular season, the Governors faced a powerful and more experienced club from Belmont Hill, and even the efforts of Captain George Twombly, who played an excellent game, were not enough to turn the tide. The final score, 7 to 2, was disheartening to the team, but they determined to work even harder than before to break into the winning column. The aggressive play of defensemen Bill McKenna and Bob Sewell combined with the goal-keeping of Jim Munro were im- portant factors in the following victory over Brooks School. The whole team played a far superior brand of hockey to that previously evidenced, and the Red and White fully deserved a 2 to 0 victory over the Brooks six. The final game of the season was played against Lawrence Central Catholic during a mild blizzard. Both teams were forced to abandon teamwork and resorted to pushing the puck up and down the ice in repeated attempts to reach scoring territory. The weather conditions con- siderably dampened the team's spirit, and the Governors succumbed 4 to 3. The club as a Whole is greatly indebted to the excellent coaching of Mr. A. Mac- donald Murphy and Mr. John Koslowski, both of whom were responsible for the fine spirit of cooperation which the squad showed throughout the season. This year the Herrick Randall Hockey Trophy was awarded to James Munro, the Governors' stellar goalie. Coach Navins was forced to center his inexperienced squad around Ed Brecken- ridge, Nick Martin, and lVfurray lVIonroe, who had played to some extent the previous year. Although everyone had improved immensely by the time of the first game, the squad was still considered to be very green when the Kimball l'nion game opened the season. The team surprised everyone, includ- ing Uoach Navins, by getting the jump on the visitors, and the Governors amassed twenty points in the first half, keeping the Kimball Union team from scoring a point. Once ahead, they were never in trouble, and the final score read 30-16. After this game, the team unanimously elected Ed Breckenridge captain, and they were well rewarded for their selec- tion, since he proved to be the spark of the whole team. After a dismal defeat at the hands of a powerful Exeter team, the Governors began to Win once more and toppled Brooks, Battery B, and Milton in that order. The Army game was a close one, and it required an overtime period to determine the issue. In this extra three minutes the team came through with eight quick points, Stan Weil scoring six of them on fast breaks. After being held to an eight to four score in the first period, the bigger and more experienced Andover team pulled away from the Governors and Won the game by quite a margin. The team played well in 51 Captain D. Edward Breckenridge spite of the defeat, and everyone gained valuable experience. Coming from behind as it had in two earlier games, the team beat Tabor in a hard-fought game, and then closed out the season with a victory over Vamp Agawam of Ipswich. It was befitting the team that they should reach their peak in their last appearance and be able to end the year with a well-earned victory. Breckenridge. Weil, Clark, Nlason, and hlartin were all high scorers at one time or another during the season, but f'aptain Breckenridge ended up as high scorer for the entire campaign. The season's final record was six wins as against two losses, one of the best records in recent years. At the end of the season Francis YY. Martill was elected captain for 1944. Savage By WARREN COURT VVith no regular wrestling coach avail- able, Mr. Sager of the faculty and Mr. Orren B. lVIcKnight, physical director and former wrestling coach of Haverhill High School, collaborated to coach the team. The final record of wins and losses was not impressive, as only one victory was gained as against four defeats. How- ever, the steady improvement which the team showed with each ensuing match paid dividends with a victory over Tabor Academy in the final match of the season. Captain Cy Savage, who wrestled in thc 165-pound class and was undefeated in the five contests, gained the only vic- tory in the opening match of the season with Exeter. The final score was 27-3. The team line-up was John ltandall, 121 pounds, Payson Gordon, 128, Jim Da- mon, 135, Alan Welch, 145, Al Weisberg, 155, Captain Savage, 165, Joe Sewell, 175, and Phil Sawyer, unlimited. The next match at Roxbury Latin, was lost 21-5. Captain Savage pinned his man for the Governors' only points. Al Weis- berg and Payson Gordon were unable to wrestle, and Don Hudson took the form- er's place. The 128-pound class, due to Gordon's absence, was defaulted. At Milton the Governors bowed 21-9, but continued to show improvement as Phil Sawyer and Payson Gordon took their first decisions of the year to round out the scoring. At Cambridge the team lost the most exciting match of the season to the Har- vard Junior Varsity 16-14. Harvard de- faulted the 121-pound class, and Payson Gordon displayed one of the best wrest- ling exhibitions of the year to gain a de- cision in the 128-pound class. Damon and Welch lost by decisions, and Holds- worth and Joe Sewell were beaten by pins. Captain Savage pinned his oppon- ent, and Phil Sawyer pulled out a deci- sion, but the final count found the Gov- ernors still two points shy of a tie. The last match of the season, held in the Lang Gymnasium on February 27, proved to be a victory at last for the Governors. The same team that opened the season, with the exception of Bob Adams in the 121-pound class and Bernie Holdsworth in the 155-pound class, wrestled against Tabor. Every man on the team defeated his opponent by a fall to make the final score read 40-0. This final match, in the estimation of the coaches and the team, was a fitting climax to the season. 55 W7-, K I 1 I .bi 'Q 1? i 1 v l'. 1 V 1 L la 4 ', , lu ': ,. Hampered by transportation diflicul- ties and a subsequent shortage of con- certs, the Glee Vlub was never the less fortunate in having one of the finest seasons in its history. VVith five concerts scheduled at the early part of the year, the entire organization was determined to be successful: and the results were gratifying to both Mr. Arthur W. Sager, the director, and to Mr. Benjamin J. Stone, the accompanist. The first concert of the year was held on January Q4 at The First Baptist Church in Haverhill, lllassachusetts. The club sang two groups of songs and the offertory hymn as its contribution to the church's evening service, a well-attended gathering of several hundred people. Following the service the club was enter- tained in the parish house by a number of the members of the Young Peoplels As- sociation of the church. Two concerts, one at Fort Devens in Ayer, llflassachusetts, and another at the Portsmouth Navy Yard in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, were given as benefit performances for the service lnen located at those two stations. The Devens Con- cert consisted of two parts, a full concert being given early in the evening for the patients at the Lovell General Hospital, and a second presented later in the eve- ning in the Army Air Vorps hangar. At Portsmouth the concert was held in a large gymnasium with excellent facilities for entertainments of this type, and the audience was well pleased, particularly with the light numbers. A joint concert with Bradford Junior College was held on April 17 at Brad- ford, the first such concert of the year. The concert was unusually successful, and Mr. Sager was especially pleased with the fine results. The second and final joint concert of the year was on May 1 with the Glee Club of Walnixt Hill School of Natick. The concert in the Lang Gymnasi- um was a definite success in the eyes of those present, and the dance which fol- lowed was enjoyed by the members of both clubs. Richard G. VVilliamson, of Augusta, Maine, was elected president early in the season after three years membership in the club. Williamson was also this year's soloist, and proved to be one of the most outstanding in recent years.
