On crisp autumn afternoons we met you on the football field - the king-sized coach who boomed directions, en- couragements, and sometimes -'7b-iF'- I On icy cold mornings we heard you as the inevitable voice over the PA system announcing, Homeroom teachers! A bus from Mountainsicle has just arrived . . . We also knew you as Teddy Bear Sands, Terror of the Basketball Court in the annual student-faculty game. And we knew you as the lavish dispenser of green, pink, and yellow slips eventually destined for the circular file. We knew and will remember the fine teacher, coach, and attendance administrator and his personal contributions to our life at GLRHS. 2 K . 9 4. i 3' - 5 Q' k L ,fm - T221 . I S . i. Every man, from Dr. Warren M. Davis, our superintendent, to each board member, helps control Governor Livingston. Activities include planning the budget, coordinating the curric- ulums of the three regional schools, and keeping us one of the best high schools in the country. Mr. Frederick Aho, our very able principal, is a man of integrity and foresight. Assistant princi- pal B. Benjamin Merrill's success lay in his un- derstanding of the problems of the faculty and student body. We owe a great deal to these great people. Helping To Plan or the Future . Seven hours of every day eighty talented people try to lead 1,500 students along the path of knowledge. Often the side streets seem more inviting. During the seven pe- riods of the day, students suffer various problems, which, of course, are not their own faults. First period, no one is awake. Mid-morning droop sets in during the second or third period, and hunger pangs during fourth. Fifth peri- od brings the realization of how fast lunch really goes. Mid-afternoon droop claims sixth period, and seventh is just too close to 3:05. This year, however, 334 diplomas will prove that the faculty found a way. Far Eastern love poetry is not an integral part of our En- glish program, but the schoolls largest academic section strives to keep its program varied, one way or another. Trips to McCarter Theater always attract large numbers of students. Mr. Aho still isnit sure whether the quality of the plays or the prospect of an afternoon off is the cause. Although betting is illegal, any social studies student who has Mr. Burdge will give good odds that someday he'll knock over his lectern. What other school can boast an assistant principal with Civil War history as his hob- by? The favorite question around social studies classes is Is there a movie today? Who cares if we speak French with a New jersey accent? Only our language staff will ever know. These people blend culture and grammar to acquaint us with the world outside our borders. We can always picture some poor teacher staying late into the afternoon to put up an imaginative bulletin board in International Hall. The language lab remains to this day a complex more deli- cate than an IBM computer. The numbers racket takes on a new meaning with the math department. SMSG versus traditional math may well be the -battle of the century. But multiplicative in- verse or common reciprocal, all are studied with equal vig- or. Mr. Rosamilia's drawings should be saved for posteri- ty, and Mr. NeddoH's two sided figure, the ancient doag- on, will survive as a modern concept. Formaldehyde is the perfume of the lab and its aroma often embraces our entire top Hoor. Science is probably the most dangerous teaching assignment. This brave staff keeps watch over the crop of young scientists as they probe the inside of a defenseless worm, mix a pungent chemical potion or study a bobbing spring. Finally, they tirelessly clean up broken test tubes and dead dry cells at the end of the day. Fair Is Foul and Foul Is Fair uotli the Iflfizfclies . English MRS. The first dance of the year was held outside in the upper parking lot. Despite near freezing temperatures, everyone had a grand time. A not so successful magazine drive took up most of October. Funds raised from this project were put in the treasury to cover Council ex- penses for this year and next, including a large donation to the Highlander Bagpipe Band. The whole school got in the Christmas spirit when the Council sponsored a Toy Drive for un- derprivileged children. The hundreds of toys brought in topped any expectations that the Council oflicers had. Basically the year was spent revising old rules and setting up new ones to make a more effec- tive Council in future years. I J? At one time, the importance was on doing those things which would make one self respectedg now it is on doing those things which oppose. Q POSSIBLE WAY OF RECOVERING THE LOST ITEMS: A change to a school where there is a library consisting of no more books than are presently found in one classroom at G.L., and so lending is not practiced. A school where there are patrols in the hallways, where there are no projects for which the school can be proud, and where there are no democratic elections, or the niceties of selections. REWARD 'IF LOST ITEMS ARE RECOVERED: One thousand five hundred students who are worthy of being respected. Marilynn Neal Hats off to the students who made Our Town possible. It was interesting to note what good imaginations can do with such a well-known play. With the addition of some clever costuming by a very capable costume committee, and talented acting, it wasn't dif- ficult to find yourself sitting in Crover's Corners, New Hampshire. Congratulations to Bob, Doug, julie, and the rest of a fine castfor a flawless performance, and to Mr. Katz for taking the time and inter- est to guide them. When the magazine drive ended several weeks ago, the hoped goal of 815,000 worth of sales, 35,000 profit, fell 84,000 short, thus reducing the amount in the student council treasury to 83,000. The loss will be felt: maybe not this year, but certainly within the next two school terms when money is needed to support activities sports, buses, and projceds. The fault of falling short of a goal is two-fold. This year, the council realizes how many more students we involved, and the pos- sibility of having too many projects in one neighborhood. But the biggest fault is with us: in student attitude.IWhether it was apathy or mockery that kept us back is no longer important: there was enough of it present to effect the outcome of the drive, The magazine drive is over. What matters now is a comeback. En- dorse your student council by supporting it in future projects. There is a Christmas used toy drive for orphans pending on the council agenda. Notes float through the air several times a day, and the sound comes from Mr. Edward Brown's musical workshop. He often wishes he had a few more arms as he carries out his duties as head of the chorale, festival choir, concert choir, and beginning chorus. His biggest job, of course, is to coordinate the music programs of the three regional high schools. His excellent direction was shown during Annie Gel Your Gun. The singing groups have also been active this year. They sent members to All-State Chorus, presented two excellent vocal programs, and attended a performance at the Met. At first it seemed just a dream, but more and more people began to be- lieve that it could be done. Under the instruction of Mr. Harrison, Wendy Thomas, now pipe major, and thirteen other girls learned to play the symbol of the Scots. They made their first appearance on Thanks- giving. Basketball, volleyball, soccer and hockey activi- ties are implimented by teams of girls with great abilities. The senior girls' hockey team went un- defeated in five games, with Sue Winans scoring 10 field goals. Rugged competition from sister schools Jonathon Dayton and Arthur L. Johnson sparked Wednesday afternoon basketball games as the class teams clawed their way through the season. Long hours of practice paid off for the archers who placed well in the state tournament. The Leaders Club is a service organization that provides an op- portunity for girls to further their leadership skills. The activities initiated by the Leaders Club include the ofheiating and coordi- nating of all extracurricular sports throughout the year. The mother and daughter tea and the Pops Picnic in the spring are the two big social functions sponsored by this organization. The Tea is sponsored by the G.A.A.: during the Christmas sea- son. Volunteers from study halls made the Santa invitations. The highlight of the tea was the announcement of newly accepted Leaders Club members and the presentation of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas. Nobody will forget Sue Winans as Santa Claus. The narrator was Sue Smith. Margo Chamberlain, Pat Simms, Paula Hunchar and Sally Geddis were sugar plums. San- ta's reindeer were Adrienne Giacobbe, Pat Bamberger, Lynn Van Voorhies, Carol Cross, Marilynn Neal, Linda Lonsburg and Jill Baranoski. The mother and father were Joan Carton and Daryle Sehriewer. Jane Opdyke and Linda Duke were the cat and dog. The toys were Judy Williams, Diane Savoy and Helen Scheideek- er. Nancy Goering and Michele Surger were the children. Major fund raising activities are the cake sale and selling of tote- bags. Money raised by the club is used for a scholarship which is awarded to a senior girl. 150 Miss Lattanzi helps C. Rupreeht with a lum- bling exercise. l . . E' 5 L. Stawick Leader? Club BOTTOM: D. Benjamin Merrill In M emoriam It is dgfcult to be a disczplinarian jor high school teenagers. This was Mr. Merrill's job. And yet he was interested in much, much more. We know him as the man who tied up the loose ends, the functions students don't realzke exist, but which insure a school 's running well. One spoke to Mr. Merrill about a special problem or plan. His judgment on requests was always fair and generous. He quiethf, lenientbr gave us opportunities to assert our maturigf. His enthusiasm for Governor Livingston was openbl expressed at many times in many ways: at football games, recognition assemblies, and class meetings. But his personal warmth, tempered with adult astuteness, stemmed fam a strong love cj kids. Apu! 25, 1965 152 TOWN SWEET SHOPPE 145 Plainfield Ave. Berkeley Heights Prop.
