Each class wore their respec- tive colors: freshman, pink; sophmores, yel- low; juniors, blue; and seniors, white. Awards for academic excellence and extra curricular activities were presented to each desearving student. At the close of the ceremony, each student moved forward, one year closer to graduation. Moving Up Day 2 V Graduation ’88 The Graduation of the class of 1988 was one to remember, especially since they were the hun- dredth class to graduate from GHS. The ceremo- nies were held outdoors on the evening of June 25. The orchestra, led be Victoria Vissar, provided music including the processional in which the se- niors entered to. Yolanda Skvorak directed the choir. Speakers were Meggan Clark, Lisa Dunkle- burg, and David Gleason. Graduation Party ’88 was to follow. 3 Graduation Party ’88 Mr. William Porter, the “father” of the new tradition in Gouverneur High, struck a wonderful idea for the 100th year anniversary of the school, a chemical fee graduation party. The Party was a definite success, but not without the laborious hours of work that were contributed by the community, staff, parents, and the class of ’88. The vibrant decorations were beautifully put together. Evolving around the exciting activities were various themes. A candle-lit walkway guilded you to the majestic main entrance where the theme displayed was, “Blast off ’88, A Night To Remember”, next the tempting, cool breeze of the “Surf’s Up” was an inviting feature for the pool. The main gym with the exotic theme “Somewhere Out There” was of planets, the silvery spaceship gleemed as the center of attention. The theme “Dreams” accompanied the casino, in the Auxiliary gym, where you could earn catbucks through games such as roulette, craps, blackjack, wheel of fortune, and many other unique games. Next you entered the “party zone” in the West Cafeteria in which some of the offered activities were; pool, videogames, table tennis, the graffiti board, and more. If food was your game then the East Cafeteria was the name. Here the endless variety of food was unlimited to your desires. Movies were also available in the auditorium to be seen at designated times. The four auctions and the door prizes were the main events of the party, which took place in the auxiliary gym and auditorium. It was evident that this was a well-designed, well-planned affair which all could be proud of, now and the years to come. v . m is i Hunter As children we are given a foundation on which to base our lives. While we are still insecure and very vulnerable, we are forced to invest in our future. How firm the foundation and wise the investment determines prosperity. —John K. They've Got The Cutest Little ! Christine’s favorite American foods are turkey subs, pizza and broccoli. She participat- ed in swimming and indoor track. When asked what she had learned from the experience of living in the United States, she stated that “Americans are not as academically oriented as Belgians.” but that American sports and teams are much more important than in Belgium. When asked what she likes most about America, she said, “I like the people in and around Gouverneur, and I think Gouverneur is fun.” When asked if Christine would consider living in the U.S, she said “yes, somewhere on the east coast”, she wants to be- come a stewardess and speak better English. Christine Poncin, a foreign exchange student from Belgium addressed the Board, telling of her homeland and the ways in which it differs from the United States. Sponsored by the Rotary, Christine has been attending Gouverneur Central School since September and has been working to meet the goals she estab- lished for herself before she came to the United States. She has been improving her English skills, learning the customs of the United States and making new friends. Since her hometown in Belgium has a population of approximately 5,000, she has found Gouverneur to be not so different, although there seems to be more ac- tivities for youth in her hometown, since it has two sports centers (although they do not have a gymnasium in her school). She attends an all-girl private school, one of three high schools in her town; there is also an all- boys private school and a co-ed public school. Her school day begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m., with two breaks during the day, composed of 8 periods of 55 minutes each. Since both French and English are required languages, the opportunity to learn additional languages is greater at her school than here; Christine speaks five laguages, including her native tongue of Flemish. In Belgium, children start formal school at age 3, entering high school at approximately 13 and graduating at age 17 or 18. High school schedules differ in Belgium, in that she has different classes each day of the week with the classes repeating the next week, more similar to our college system of scheduling. 59 SPORTS Row One: Christine Poncin, Laurie MaCuley, Tina Hays, Aleesha Pierce, Cindy Shafer, Angela Tharrett, Heather Rubar Row Two: Coach Hance, Janet Antwine, Angela Pierce, Laurie Biosi, Heather Lincoln, Amy Cuppernell, Nicole Hay Row Three: Rebecca Anderson, Marcy Alberry, Amy Sutkus, Jenifer Sampson, Carrie Newvine, Tina Hitch- man, Mandi Stevens, Claire Sandor Missing: Paula Clark, Andrea Jef- ferson Two years ago, a swimming pool was added to the athletic facilities at GHS. The pool has been used for instruction, as well as for both recre- ational and competitive purposes. Beginning with the school year 1987-88, stu- dents were required to take swimming in gym. They were instructed and tested on basic swim- ming techniques. The opportunity to use the pool has been open to virtually everyone in the community. Courses, such as advanced lifesav- ing and scuba diving have also been offered. Opponent GHS score Oppon sc ST. The GHS pool has been a benefit. Everyone will enjoy this facility for years to come. Anne was portrayed by Jenni- fer Swem. It told the classic story of Anne going to live with Mathew and Marilla Cut- bert, (Andy Losey and Amanda Sipher). No matter how hard she tried she could never please Marilla. She always seemed to get into horrible predicaments, usually with her best friend Diana (Jennifer Theraldson) and Gil- bert Blythe (Greg Halpen). As Anne matures Marilla becomes puite attached to her and fi- nally admits her love for Anne as if she were her own daughter. Meanwhile Ira Mills (Eric Walton) comes calling upon Marilla. It turns out Ira was her long lost love and Anne’s uncle. The play was directed by Carol Amberg and other cast members included Meggan Clark, Lisa Dun- kelburg, Dave Gleason, Andrea Presutti, Amy Tricki, Lisa Smith, Jennifer McAdam, and Kristi Farr. With Billy Crocher (Greg Halpen), Reno Sweenie (Kristie Farr), Moonface Martin (Dave Gleason), Hope Harcourt (Betty Cento- fanti), and Evelyn Oakleigh (Ed Leader). Billy loved Hope but Hope was getting married to Evelyn. Reno was willing to help distract Evelyn, in the process she fell in love with him, Moony also agreed to help. At the end Reno married Evelyn and Billy married Hope. Other cast members included The Angles; Connie Siegrist, Sa- rah Young, Michelle Matice, and Nancy Wade, and Mrs. Harcourt (Amanda Sipher) 9 96 r V Spirit Week This year, Spirit Week was filled with i ny different activities for the students to j rticipate in. There was the traditional c ess weird day in which students showed up i an array of costumes from cute to bazaar. r ere was hat day in which many appeared ; irting their favorite headware. We also 1 d dress like the fifties and blue and gold 0 y. The end of the week topped off with the p p rally and dance, where John Mossing a d Nancy Wade were crowned Homecom- 1 king and queen. Unfortunately the Wild- c s were defeated in a tough game against t e Malone Huskies. Only Time Will Tell, Prom The Junior class did a fantastic and memorable job of “Only Time Will Tell” with the 1988 prom. Those who got the chance to realize that in true life only time will tell what will happen, and to dance away with a live band. The prom court consisted of king and queen, Cory Wood and Dawn Dodds, Prince and Princess, Danny Cunning- ham and Maureen Bush, Duke and Dutchess, Keith Gillan and Amy Leon- ard, Count and Countess, Jeff Tebo and Colleen Sawyer The evening was enjoyed by all who attended. I’m sorry we couldn’t afford color senior pictures and I hope having activities listed under the picture makes up for it. I’ve tried to use as many ideas you have given me and I appreciate all the pictures many of you gave. I tried to use as many as possible. I have a lot of good hopes for this book and I hope everyone enjoys it. The staff and I have put a huge amount of time and effort into this book to make it successful and for that I must put forth tremendous thanks to some people; Dawn- You were always there to help whenever and wherever you could. Jen- To one of the best quad copiers. To you both -for visiting me during lunch all the time. Eric- For being my moral support during meetings, and keeping me sane. Tracy- You had great eagerness to learn, I only wish I had more time to teach. Best of luck next year! Katrina- Super Ads. I’d be lost without you running around the school tracking everything down for me. Good luck to you also. Terry- Good job on ads while you were here. Thanks. Karen, Sarah, Hope-You were always there to help put on the finishing touches. Sarah- For always coming to those late meetings so we wouldn’t miss musical rehersal. Trina- Excellent typing! Mr. Betrus- Most of all. I can’t thank you enough! Whenever Mr. Carper got technical on me you could always calm me down and make me say “Oh is that all he means”. You’ve taught me a lot in the years I’ve been on the staff and you’ve given me a lot of inspiration. Again, I could never thank you enough! I hope there is no one I’ve forgotten but if there is thanks to you! Editor-in-Chief Andrea Presutti Jerry Peters; We’d like to put forth our apologies for the mishap in last years book and we want to give Jerry the credit he earned for his work on last years book. At last another year has gone. As I’ve explained in the past, a correction in a book that is only issued once a year, comes on a once a year basis. I can’t correct, repair, fix or otherwise change a book once it has gone to press. I wish to take this time to apologize to anyone, anywhere who may find fault or objectional material within. Over the past ten years I have never tried in any way or manor to upset or offend anyone. After looking at past books, I find them although not consistant in quality, good books. This book is no exception. The listing of senior activities and supurlitives has left us open to many interpretations, not to mention your (senior) secret codes. I always feel a sense of pride when I see “my” kids graduate. With the pride comes a sense of emptiness when their gone. Good friends are hard to find, but harder to lose. Best of luck to all of you. Andrea, great job!! to a super actress and editor, you’ll go far. Don’t forget us little people who basked in your ray of light. P.S. Tracy, Katrina it’s all up to you now. 104 Mr. Betrus indicating a happy purchaser of the Deanonian. Staff Eric Walton Tracy Reed, Andrea Presutti, Dawn Bigelow, Jen- nifer Swem, Sarah Young Tracy Reed Katrina Day 105 Karen Fifield Typist: Trina Dusharm 106 In Six Short Years . . . . I Six years ago the 1989 Senior Class entered 7th grade. Like the young people named below, they had hopes and dreams for what the future would hold. The following Gouverneur students were an active part of our families, classes and circle of friends; yet six years later, they are no longer with us: Maria Angelino Hugh Pennington LeRoy Cole Thomas Pennington Roy Cox Brett Shatraw Robert Lamb Dale Siegrist Jason Link Steven Smith Bertrand Lutz Young or old, no one can escape the specter of mortality. It is very sad when we lose loved ones. The loss of a young person is tragic. Please remember, no one is immortal or invincible and that life and death are separated by a thin line which we all walk. Please treat yourself, family and friends with the love, kindness and respect that comes from mortality. So much can happen in six short years. Ft ' V ■ The Class of ’89 at GHS carried the year through with many new trends and brought back old ones. 20 years after Woodstock the Class of ’89 brought back the Peace Sign, Tie-dyed clothes still prevailed, and the spirit of the 60’s seemed ever popular. Many new movies hit high on the charts. Who framed Roger Rabbit? was one of the biggest hits with most of its animated cast surrounded by a human world. Tom Cruise made us a few Cock- tails, while Bill Murray got Scrooged. Freddy came back in Night- mare on Elm Street 4, and Tom Hanks got Big, and Billy the kid came back in Young Guns. The music scene brought about many new surprises. Bobby McFerrin brightened everyone’s day with Don’t Worry Be Happy. D.J. Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince rapped about how Parents Just Don’t Understand. no EIGHTIES Def Leppard poured some sugar on us and Guns n’ Roses Appetite for Destruction finally caught some eyes making it a number one album for several weeks. Robert Plant gave us a solo album, Now and Zen, and Locomotion had everyone dancing in chains. Unfortunately we had to say goodbye to Roy Orbison who passed away in January. Ripped up jeans were one of the biggest fashions this year along with boxer shorts. The San Francisco 49ers won the Superbowl and Sean Penn and Madonna have filed for divorce as did Robin Gi- vens and Mike Tyson. We also inaugurated George Bush into the presidential office and celebrated the summer Olympics. In closing 1989 has been a great year. Many challenges and experiences will face us in the future. Our decisions for the future will guide us toward happiness but we will never forget those which made us laugh and cry. Our memories of these special people will remain forever.
