Gouverneur Jr. Sr. High School 1988 Deanonian Volume 62 Gouverneur, New York i Spirit Week proved once again to be a success. This year the hall decoration contest was re- vived. The Sophomores seemed to pull together and win first place. The week consisted of Hat Day, Dress Weird Day, Western Day and Blue and Gold Day. The week was finished with a pep rally led by the cheerleaders. The screaming contest seemed almost deafening as the seniors had tough competition with the Juniors and Sophomores. .Spirit Week brought G.H.S. stu- dents together as one student body. SPIRIT I if On March 27th and 28th, 1987 GHS performed the musical My Fair Lady. It’s the story of Eliza Doolittle (Betty Centofanti) who is turned from an ill-mannered cockney flowergirl into a charming young lady by Professor Henry Higgins (Chuck Patton). After going through quite an ordeal learn- ing to speak proper English and proper etiquette neither Higgins nor Eliza think they need each other but in the end they realize they’re in love. Other cast members included Matt Foster as Colo- nel Pickering, Chris Siebels as Alfie Doolittle, Greg French as Freddy Iynsford Hill, Carrie Allen as Mrs. Higgins, and Ric Smith as Jamie. 4 b SPAIN ’87 In April 1987, seven students and one teacher took their spring break vacation in Spain. They visited many cities in- cluding Madrid, Sevilla, and Toledo. The students experienced many new customs such as Spanish food, Spanish television, foreign taxi rides, and using strange money. After meeting many new people and doing many exciting things it turned out a trip that wouldn’t soon be forgotten. 6 Granada Front: Anna Pierce, Ms. Holman, Dawn Bigelow, Andrea Presutti. Back: Chuck Klem, Dave Kemp, Adrian Woods, Kieth Gillan. IT’S A BUMMER FOR GUYS WIIK V ... Your little sister has to tell you about the facts of life. You go to a job interview and you can’t remember your name. You wax your car and the paint falls off. You try to impress a girl by doing a burnout in your car and you crash into a tree. You shoot your best basket of the basket- ball season in the wrong basket. You think you’ve fixed your car then it won’t start. 8 IT’S A BUMMER FOR GIRLS WHEA ... Your Mom calls your boyfriend by the wrong name (like your ex-boyfriend’s). You take home every book in your locker except the one you need. Your best friend waits until the end of the day to tell you that your skirt is completely see-through. You ask your beautician to trim your hair, and she “trims” off six inches. You can’t buy a bathing suit because you need a size 11 bottom and a size 3 top. You’re taking a test in English; the class is totally silent, and you get the hiccups. 9 IT’S BEEN A “FAIR” SUMMER locker motif Every locker has its own unique style. Each stu- dent has his favorite Rock groups, styles, and taste. About the second day of school everyone stays after to decorate their locker. The halls are full of students trying to outdo one another. Who’s locker will be the best? You decide. Will you remember When I’m gone away That I care about you What you do and what you say? Will you remember When you’re feeling sad and blue And things seem all wrong, That, if I could, I would be there to comfort you? Will you remember All the things we shared Both good and bad Just because we cared? Will you remember Us as children being young Playing and singing and laughing When I’m not there to help sing the songs? 14 Will you remember All of the years We’ve had together All the smiles and the tears? Will you remember? Yes, I know you will Because you just can’t part With memories like those They have a place all their own in your heart When we are apart The memories will keep us close And the next time we are together Along will come new memories Just as special as those. Some of Jason’s hobbies we band, marching band, and playing the drums. He would ha been a senior this year. Jason was taken from our side tc early in life. God works in strange and mysterious ways. But he had h reasons for taking Jason so soon in life. For now he will suffi no more, and he will worry no more. Someday when it is 01 turn we will see Jason waiting for us in his new home eternal peace. Jason will live forever in our hearts and in oi souls. — Andy Losey IN MEMORY OE ROBERT K. LAMB As many people know, “Bobby” Lamb touched many pec pie in so many different ways. Bobby was taken from us all a tragic boating accident that left us all deeply hurt, most of a his parents who raised him until his death, and his brothc Joey. Whether it was by a simple smile, or a joke, or a statemen Bobby touched our hearts in different ways. He was very fond of fishing, hunting, trapping, and othe outdoor activities. Bobby loved nature and appreciated wha it had to offer. As a close friend to Bobby and his family, I can say that h is missed more and more every day. He realizes that the lov for him is here, and that he will be with us all again in his nev world without pain. BOBBY, YOU’RE ALWAYS IN OUR HEARTS!!! Chapter presented a “Haunted House” that was en- joyed by all. Amid the costumes, and the skeletons, little kids either went through laughing or crying. The S.A.D.D. chapter made over 300 dollars for their cause. Like the Haunted House, the Chapter had many fund raisers such as dances and flower sales. Let’s help encourage this program to contin- ue. Students, parents, and administrators for the past 25 years have respected and admired Mr. Garner’s integrity and fairness as an administrator. Best wishes in your retirement, think of us from time to time. PROM ’87 The Junior Class did a fantastic and memorable job of Oriental Fantasy with the 1987 Prom. Those who attended got the chance to taste the Oriental and dance the night away with the band Asylum. The Prom Court consisted of King and Queen, Chris Siebels, and Lisa Kinny, Prince and Prin- cess, Bob Porter and Dawn Dodds, Duke and Dutchess, John Mossing and Bridgette Pistolesi, and Count and Countess, George Hays and Terri MacTurk. The evening was enjoyed by all. HAPPY 100T through the MOVING UP DAY As the students grades 9-12, with their respective colors of yellow, pink, white, and blue, entered the auditorium; the Senior High Band played many delightful tunes. Their expectations of finally moving-up would be fulfilled. Moving- Up Day ceremony of 1987 reflected the good times of the past and many more to come. The awards for academic achievement and extra-curricular activities were delivered to the deserving students. One by one students moved to their new positions and closer to graduation. J As the Class of 1987 came to the final platform of their high school career the last farewells were said. Valedictorian Zuebeda Jalalzai spoke to her classmates and all of those who attended the cer- emony, as did Charles Patten and Matt Foster. There was also a remembrance of those students who unfortunately passed on: Roy Cox and Burt Lutz Jr. 64D Graduation ’87 NAME Nickname Favorite Movie Favorite Song Favorite Food Life Ambition Activities HEATHER ALGUIRE Hez Bambi I’m Crazy For You Pickles Peanut Butter Rich Teacher Twirling I, 2, 3, Basketball 1, 2. 3; Soccer 1, 2, 3, 4; Guide 2, 3; Student Council 1, 2, 3, 4; Class Officer 1, 2, 3, 4; Varsity Club 3, 4; Jr. National Honor Society 1; Jr. Prom Committee 3; Bill’s Girlfriend 2, 3, 4 JEFF ALGUIRE Augie Cobra Skin Flicks True Blue Budweiser, Pizza, and Happy Meal ISP 1, 2, 3; Detention 1, 2, 3; Lunch I, 2, 3, 4; Girl Watching 1, 2; Class Skipping 1, 2, 3, 4 MICHELLE ALLEN Shelly Gnocci’s, Heath Blizzard Dust in the Wind Little Shop of Horrors To be just like my mom Cheerleading 2, 3; Musical 1, 4; Foreign Language Culture Club 1, 2; Chorus 1, 2, 4; Drama 3, 4; Student Council Alternate 1, 2, 3 BRYON ARGANBRIGHT Dweeb Living Day Lights Mony Mony Lasagna Mechanical Engineer (aerodynamics). YEARBOOK It is said “to place your ideas, your dreams, before the crowd is t( risk loss,” but as my final days as the Deanonian Editor come to; close, I’ve realized how many different ideas have combined t( make this yearbook a success. I’ve considered every idea presentee to me. You wanted color senior pictures, and even though it was; little more than we could afford, YOU GOT SENIOR PICTURE; IN COLOR. You wanted Senior Superlatives, and you got those ir color too. I’ve tried many different ideas for pages, (Fair, Exams and risked them being a failure. Every year past editors havf acknowledged people that without whom the book would not have been a success. This year I’d like to acknowledge: Bryon — Thanks for caring and understanding during those weeks I was so busy that we couldn’t spend as much time together as we usually did. Bridgette — You’ve always been there when I needed a friend and a hard working staff member. Thanks for your help with the senior quads and all the pictures you took. Thanks Sis. Andrea — For all the quads I didn’t have time to do. Good Luck next year, and remember DURAN DURAN lives. Greg + Stacy — Whenever we needed pictures, you were there. Colette + Cheryl — We owe most of the typing to you. Tracy — remember those Sundays, thanks for your needed help. Katrina — your enthusiasm. Mr. Betrus — without your help and friendship, I would not be who I am today. You had confidence in me that no one has ever shown to me. Thank you. Hey, Beez, My first Broadway show is on me. Ps. Thanks Mr. Appleby for your help with the musical. Kristie Farr — Editor-in-Chief The Deanonian Staff would like to thank E. T. Bowman Forest Helvie Conway-Helvie Studios Clarence Evans Dave Depaul 88 STAFF i! Welcome to our yearbook. This is the new and improved 1988 I' model. As you have seen (this is, after all, page 89) the seniors are in living color. We hope in the next few years to be able to always have color for seniors, but a One-hundredth Anniversary II only comes around, well you know. I It looks as though we are finding 120 pages isn’t enough and ! overcrowding has occurred, for this we apologize. To the persons j missed or names mispelled, sorry. Kristie — It’s been real fun, we must do lunch sometime! Seriously, it has been a long trip with lots of work, laughter, ; tears, setbacks and rewards. I shall never forget you and your strength under pressure. It is easy to have confidence in you. Keep a sense of humor. Andrea — The job is in your hands now. I’m sure you will keep up the Denonian tradition with an excellent 1989 year- book. !!!Order Your 1989 Book Soon!!! In the area of music, Debbie Gibson, Age 17, became an instant success with her debut album, Out of the Blue. Similarly, Tiffany made her mark in music with her debut album Tiffany. A new group appeared from “down under” by the name of Icehouse. Fatal Attraction, starring Glenn Close and Michael Douglas, kept audiences on the edges of their seats across the country. Patrick Swayze stunned audiences in Dirty Dancing. Robocop made people ponder the possibilities of the future and technology. The Cosby Show continues to entertain families, while Lisa Bonet has gone on to Another World. The Iran Contra hearings and Oliver North became household words. America was saddened by the deaths of Jackie Gleason, comedian and dancer, Fred Astaire, and also actor, Lome Greene. Oprah Winfrey dominated television talk shows. Her strength and compassion have endeared her to millions of viewers. Fashion trends changed, but also stayed the same.
