Known to all as Paco,” he has two brothers and his home town is Madrid, Spain. Paco likes America especially for it’s driving age, 16. (In Spain, it’s 18) When asked what he dislikes, he said the drinking age. Paco has been to New York City and Washington D.C. during his stay and plans on going to college after graduation. Maria Fachal, age 18, was hosted by the Clark family. She has two brothers, Carlos and Javier, and one sister, Puri, who live in her hometown, La Coruna, Spain. Maria likes the American people and especially American pizza. She dislikes the cold. During her stay she went to Mexico, Mon- treal, New York City (Broadway) and California, but she said she liked the Adirondacks more. Maria plans to study more production after grduation, possibly in Paris. Note: When Maria heard she was coming to New York, she thought she was going to the City. Was she surprised!!! DAIRY PRINCESS Amy Byrns was crowned St. Lawrence County Dairy Princess on June 13, 1986. As Dairy Princess, Amy’s respon- sibilities include: appearing in parades, promoting dairy products at businesses and schools throughout the county, and talking to groups about the importance of the dairy industry in both the county and the state. In the State Dairy Princess competition Amy was one of the eight finalists. Congratulations, Amy, on a job well done! 57 DEDICATION Dedication Bert Lutz, Jr., was a fine young man who will be missed by everyone who knew him. Words are difficult at times like this ... The following is a quote from a letter by Bert’s Aunt Virginia (Mussaw.) “Bert Lutz, Jr., died July 29th, 1986. He would have been a senior this year. I know how much he liked school and even though he did not like to have his picture taken, he was determined to have his Senior picture taken and even walked up the stairs to do so, although he was not supposed to walk up stairs. The fragility of life is often overlooked by young people in the rush to adulthood. Bert was a kind, good person who was called from our side too early. We shall always feel a sense of loss whenever we think of him. IN MEMORY OF ROY DALE COX Anyone who knew Roy will agree that he was special. The words car- ing, creative, artistic, and comedian all come to mind, and describe his personality. He always could be counted on for the support and a helping hand just for the asking. His hobbies, hunting and camping were spent with family and friends, although his favorite pass time was sketching pictures. Roy always hoped to be an artist. Roy was very creative, using his vivid imagination to compose” lit- tle rhymes and songs, always sure to bring a laugh and a smile from all of us. Smiles that will never be forgotten. We all share an emptiness for our loss. Smiles cross our face when we remember jokes, and pranks he played, and for good times shared together. Tears shed for the shortness of time in years we shared, friendship and love taken away too soon. In our hearts and in memory, Roy, although you are gone, you will always live in our hearts. Gone, but never forgotten, we love you Roy. 58 T5= amoral monsters, and those who ake the sentimental choice — let hem in — are obviously soft-heart- 'ed morons. 59 1 FOOTBALL VARSITY Row 1, Coach G. Once again, the SENIORS dominated spirit week — proving themselves to be the rowdiest in all of G.H.S. On dress Weird day they showed their wild side by emerging as a tribe of In- dians; at the week ending pep rally they showed that they had the most spirit by sporting more signs and by being louder than any other class. “ALMOST PARADISE” As the couples filled the gym, the lights grew dim and the heat was on as Cold Sweat began to play. Streamers and balloons filled the air as the students danced the night away in front of the soft mural sunset. Heather Love and Duffy Bush were crowned our king and queen. The couple led the dance to the theme song Almost Paradise . The court Chris Siebles, prince; Penny Pritty, princess; Garnet Weaver, count; Kate Foster, countess; Danny Cunn- ingham, duke; and the dutchess, Bridgette Pistolesi followed. The Class of ’87 made it a night to remember. A special thanks to Mrs. DeLuca and Mr. Adams for their support and a job well done. — MOVING UP DAY f I ! r i i The new auditorium glowed with the designated colors of grades 9-12 as the 1986 Moving-Up ceremony commenced. Many deserving students were rewarded for their achievements as well as for their extra-curricular ac- tivities. The Senior High Band played chorales by Bach while the students advanced toward graduation. GRADUATION 1986 The graduation of the class of 1986 was cer- tainly not an average evening. Anyone in at- tendance knows this. Thoughts of the past lingered with tears in the eyes of each graduate, as the thought of a new life approached. The ceremony was the first of many to be held in G.H.S.’s new auditorium. The class of '86 is one that will not be soon forgotten. 81 Right: Mr. Der-egg-o Far Right: Volcanic Ensemble Bottom Right: CHARRRR GE” Middle: “This child’s brain is only this big!” Bottom: “Hey, do the Hoochie Koochie!!” CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES Kathy O’Reily, Nicole Lashbrooks, Audra Schwelnus, Karen Fuller, Dana Fuller, Mike Armes, Terry Alguire, Scott Libby Row 1, Mitchell Bresette, Trish Billings, Katrina Day, Angela Weaver, April Stacy, Richelle Hopper Row 2, Lori Durham, Mike Imhof, Jason Pallister, Dan Fetcie, Ricky Robins, Dana Weman, Kelly Wilmar Row 3, Melanie Harris, Janet Antwine, Anita Tupper, Shelby Rouse, Karen Olson, Cindy Jenkins 84 GUIDES A.M. I’ve had a lot of ideas thrown at me all year long, and I’ve tried to work with as many of them as possible, e.g. You wanted a color senior section — that idea was out of your price range so I arranged to have a color picture taken of the seniors as a group. Also, you wanted captions — you got captions. They may not be the best, but as I said you got captions. So even if I didn’t follow your exact request the least you can do is say, “thanks for trying.” Each Editor before me has acknowledged some people without whom their book would never have been completed. There are some people who I would like to acknowledge this year: Fred and Debby — editors of the past two years. If they had not trusted me with so much of their books I would not have gained the knowledge I have now and I probably would have been totally lost this year. Shannon — without the money you raised the Deanonian would be so much in debt it would be pathetic. Katrina — without your roaming around to find names we’d probably still be look- ing for names. You added ambitiousness to the otherwise lackadaisical atmosphere in 212F. Andrea — It seems we were always laughing when you were in the room. You did an excellent job with the captions. Robin — I think you were the ony one who knew how to do quads without me tell- ing you. You were a cheerful addition to the staff. Kristi — You helped me a lot when I wanted something written up. You always did a good job. Good luck next year. Mr. Betrus — Without your persistence, patience and understanding we would have driven each other crazy back in September. Whenever I said “I have an idea” you were willing to listen and help me turn that idea into a page in the book. For that I am forever grateful. I owe many thanks to each of you. William Woodward Editor-in-Chief p.s. At last! We finally have an editor who can spell Woodward!!! 96 THE DEANONIAN STAFF would like to thank: E. T. Bowman Forrest Helvie Conway-Helvie Studios Clarence Evans George Morris Mr. Garner Shannon Streeter, Sales and Sports Editor Well its my favorite time of the year again. It’s favorite because the year- books done (sorta) the musicals done (thank God) and I can return to a normal schedule. This year 87-88 I will be trying a new method of staff operation. Meetings will begin after October 31st. This late start will make sure new members are kept busy. I’ve tried to explain to new staffers that yearbook work comes in bunches, homerooms, seniors, clubs, etc. so there are times we are overloaded and other times when we are waiting. New staff members must be sure they are going to be present at meetings. Never again will I allow a large group to start and then leave the core group (usually the editor) to do the book alone. If you wish to become a member think seriously about the commitment before joining. We want workers not faces in a picture!!! THE MESSAGE It is very sad indeed when we lose two seniors in one year. Remember that no one is immortal or invincible and that life and death are divided by a thin line which we all walk. Please treat yourself, family, and friends with the love, kind- ness and respect that comes from mortality. I wish to thank Bill Woodward (sp) for his constant hard work, input and creativity in doing this book. Bill has true school spirit. He has put his heart into the book you hold. I also wish to thank Shannon Streeter, our SUPER sales per- son and Lorraine Dusharm our typist for the past three years. They have made mine and Bill’s job easier and your book better. I always feel proud when I see my” kids graduate. I also feel a sense of great emptiness when they’re gone, good friends are hard to find. Best of luck to all of you. Once again thank you William. p.s. The Statue of Liberty celebrated her refurbishing and centennial with tall ships and fireworks filling New York Harbor. Nancy Reagan continued her anti-drug campaign by telling youngsters to “Just say no,” while her husband's integrity was tested by the Iran scandal. President Reagan didn’t have any better luck at the Iceland summit. Cold stares were the on- ly thing exchanged between the world powers at Reykjavic, Iceland. In the town of Carmel, California Clint Eastwood’s day was made as he was elected mayor. The U.S.A. finally pulled together and won back the America’s Cup, while Voyager flew around the world on one tank of fuel, ending the year with a happy note in aerospace although the year started in disaster. New York fans cheered twice this year as the Mets took the World Series and the Giants stole the Superbowl. On a more local scale, Potsdam State is coming close to breaking the undefeated record in the NCAA division III. In '87, the Bangles walked to the top of the pop charts with “Walk like an Egyptian.” The Boss was at the top with “Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band” — Live 1975-85”. Janet Jackson had complete “Control,” Timex Social Club told us about all those “Rumors,” while Bon Jovi gave love a bad name. Genesis hit the charts with their album Invisible Touch” and Canada gave us a new group, Glass Tiger. Billy Vera and the Beaters had their first hit song and the Monkees were revived with the song “That was Then This is Now,” along with their tour. Ben E. King stood by us and Run DMC taught us how to walk, even though Aerosmith had done so in the 70’s. 100 1 YHEN I THINK OF YOU — Janet Jack! AM 2 YPICAL MALE — Tina Turner. The 1 billboard song was That’s What Friends Are For by Dionne and Friends. Once again the Cosby Show” continued as the nation’s favorite T.V. show, while ALF captured the hearts of American’s young and old. Today” is now broadcasting all over the world. The mini-series Amerika (about a Rus- sian takeover in 1997) created much controversy. The movies this year were unique in that the top smashes were sequels; they include: Aliens, Karate Kid 11, Star Trek VI, Rocky IV, and Nightmare on Elm Street 11 and 111. Aussie Paul Hogan topped the movie charts with Crocodile Dundee, Tom Cruise was the Top Gun and Platoon attracted many movie goers with it's vivid portrayal of the Viet- nam War. Many will remember the 12:00 showing of the Rocky Horror Picture Show along with the toilet paper and water used at the show. The musical-movie Little Shop of Horrors was also a crowd pleaser. Fund raisers this year included Amnesty International, and Hands Across America. In Odgensburg, the U.S. and Canada joined hands across the bridge making Hands Across the Border a huge success. Fashions this year brought baggy shirts and tight pants, while florescent just wasn’t hip” anymore. Long hair seemed the style, while braces disappeared along with glasses. Colored hair was out. Boxer shorts made a come back and people rushed to Benetton to get their jerseys, and then to the nearest jewelry store for the hottest item — Swatch Watches. The boredom in Gouverneur finally ended with the Max in Watertown. Joe and Vinnys opened, and finally a shopping mall is in close reach as the Salmon Run Mall opened it’s doors in the fall. The world was sad to lose this year: Andy Worhol, Ted Knight, Liberace, Ray Bolger, Danny Kaye and Cary Grant. This was a year of changes, friendships, and good times! 101 103
