A f What Was ’84? 1 m 4 '84 Was Fond Memories ’84 Was Good Times • • nau p GHS Presen ts: MUSIC MAN Another Fine Performance... The 1983 spring musical, MUSIC MAM, was in keeping with a tradition of fine perfor- mances at GHS. Much of the credit for this achievement goes to the director, Bruce McIntyre, who selflessly gave of his time and patience. MUSIC MAN centers around the proud town of River City Iowa and follows the action of a swindling salesman who turns for the better after fall- ing for the town librarian. The cast consisted of John Reynolds (Harold Hill), Brenda June (Marian Paroo), Andrew Ellis (Marcellus Washburn), Gary McCullouch (Mayor Shinn), Sheryl McCullouch (Eulalie Shinn), Kathy Harron (Mrs. Paroo), Jim Burt (Charlie Cowell), Matt Foster (Win- throp), Pete Garner, Joe Peck, Charlie Lyons, Chris Anderson (the Quartet), Brian Langtry (Tommy Ojilas), Kristi Derrigo (Amaryllis), and Cristy Bigarel (Zaneeta). Also in the cast were Dawn Dodds, Trade Davis, Kathy Thomas, Kris Mossing, Cathy Leader, Michael Whitton, Car- rie Allen, Lori Backus, Betty Centofanti, Sue Foster, Greg French, Steelson Shwelnus, Debby von Colin, and Ken Weatherup. The cast was sup- plemented by many elemen- tary school children who played the sons and daughters of the townspeople. All are to be commended. Also deserving thanks are Charlie Palmatier and his pit orchestra.; Marylou Scott, the music director; Judi Duff, the choreographer; and our un- sung heroes, the backstage crew. 'w 13 - Students Move Up MOVING-UP DAY Moving-up Day is an impor- tant time for all students at GHS. It is an occasion in which students take a few more steps through time on their trek to graduation and adulthood. On Moving-up Day, 1983, the classes, in their respective colors, watched as deserving students received recognition for their achievements. At the close of the ceremonies, each grade moved forward in its High School placement as the band played under the direction of Mr. Palmatier. ’83 Prom — “On the Wings of Love” 1983 JUNIOR PROM “On Zke Wings Of JCove” 9:00 TO G.H.S. 1:00 With AUDITORIUM LOTUS MAY 21st 1983 $6.50 PER COUPLE 14 This year’s prom “On the Wings of Love” was the greatest. The music was pro- vided by “lotus” who put on a great show. The hard work and dedication of the Juniors, under the direction of class presi- dent Kerry Kennedy, paid off with a good time for all who attended. The King and the Queen of this year’s prom were Karen Johnson and Matt Carbone. 15 • • • Seniors Sweep Spirit Week Spirit Week is a traditional time of craziness at G.H.S. It is celebrated by participation in such events as slave day, hat day, dress weird day, and hall decoration. The week is topped off by a pep rally, in which students show spirit for their school and the sports teams. Such events as pie-in-face for the losing money-raisers and blindfolded hoop-shooting contests also take place at this time. This year, the Seniors swept Spirit Week by winning the Class Olympics and the hall decoration contest. 16 (graduation 1983 marked the 95th commencement ceremony at Gouverner Central School. The outdoor program was highlighted by speeches from Kathy Har- ron, Lisa Mills and Lynn Rich. Classmates and parents looked on with mixed emotions at this milestone. “Our Town” GHS Drama Takes to the Road . . . This year’s fall production of Our Town came off smoothly. This Thorton Wilder play led us through the lives of two families and other individuals in the small town of Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire. The “Stage Manager,” who led us through the story, was played by Chris Anderson. The other two leading roles of “Emily” and “George” were played by Kristen Mossing and Robert Brown respectively. Following a Friday and Saturday night performance, Out Town members traveled to the Edwards school stage and per- “Part Yaow!” “Where are the guys?” formed for the students there. In exchange the Edwards Drama dept, came to perform Spoon River An- thology. We all hope this idea becomes a tradition among local schools. Mrs. Joan Taylor is to be commended for her volunteer work with our drama department. 18 19 Dean Oratoricals Participants in the Dean Oratorical Contest left to right are: Renee Rivellini, Susan Foster, Michael Whitton, Gary McCullouch, Kenneth Weatherup, Michael O’Riley and Mary Norton. (Missing from picture is Kristy Bigarel). Gouverneur High School’s oldest tradition continued Thursday, Feb. 9, with the presentation of the 81st Dean Oratorical Contest. This year’s performance included a variety of dramatic and humorous presentations. Kenneth Weatherup performed an adaptation of Daniel Keye’s novel, “Flowers for Algernon.” Neil Simon’s play “God’s Favorite” is the basis of Gary McCullough’s selection. Susan Foster inter- preted Joel Chandler Harris’ classic “Uncle Remus.” British humor at its best was the subject of Renee Rivellini’s performance of “Why Herbert Killed His Mother” by Alice Longford. Mary Norton examined contemporary family life in her selection from “Life Among the Savages.” Selections from Shakespeare’s classic “Julius Caesar” was the subject of Michael Whitton’s performance. Michael O’Riley entertained the audience with a humorous look at technology in Corey Ford’s “Carry Me Back to Old Yesterday.” Kristy Bigarel rounded out the per- formance with selections of wry humor by Andy Rooney. The Dean Oratorical Contest was started by Jennie and Cora Dean in 1903 and is continued through the generosity of the Rotary Club. Advisor to the performers is Peter McCarthy. The boys winner was Gary McCullouch, the girls winner was Sue Foster. 20 FRCULTV IRflU 21 22 ive®6 SJj°ve aet G T fto 4 AX % I WANT A RAISE! Years of frustration from being underpaid s face as R. IJ60I Whiz Quiz This year’s Whiz Quiz team consisted of Jim Douglass, Jill Reynolds, Chris Anderson, and Monique Alberry. The previous three are pic- tured below as listed, left to right. Despite a gallant effort, our team was defeated in the first round by the team from O.F.A. Mr. Johnson is hoping for increased participation in Gouverneur’s Whiz Quiz in coming years. Help us out, and perhaps we can live up to our old motto — “We’ll get ’em next year!” Exchange Student Liza Zakrisson, here through the American Scandinavian Student Exchange program (ASSE), from Ostersund, Sweden, spent the 1983-84 school year attending good ol’ GHS. Liza has earned the nickname “Potato Chip” from her enjoy- ment of junk food. Liza’s favorite subjects include gym and English. She’s studied German for 6 years, French for 2, and English for 3 years. She was awarded an athletic scholarship in Sweden and plans to do some traveling after graduating from high school. Liza enjoys body building, back- packing, skiing, and riding her horse. She has a sister Anna, age 14 and a dog named Belinda. Liza was hosted by the John Mossing family. 129 This year, the Senior class decided to dedicate the year- book to Maria Angelino, a very special girl and a member of the Senior class. Maria was born October 20, 1965 at Cornwall-on-the-Hudson, New York. She was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis when she was five months old. She started school in Gouverneur in 1972 at East Side Elementary. She has been unable to attend school for most of her junior year, and all of her senior year. She will complete her high school education at home with the aid of a tutoring service provided by the school and graduate with the Class of 1984. Her interests include: music, miniatures, reading, and playing the piano. She can beat anyone in Scrabble, and she loves to fish in warm weather. Maria was Poster Teen for the St. Lawrence Valley Chapter of Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in 1980. She has two sisters who graduated from G.H.S.: Cassandra, Class of 1978 and Melanie, Class of 1982. 130 CDNCLLEDN HBU lsau 1983 was a year of tension and craziness. The computer was named “man of the year,” and Ma Bell went all to pieces. The Marines were sent to keep the peace in Lebanon resulting in the tragic loss of many American lives. Yassar Arafat’s retreat marked the end of the PLO. Presidential candidates started living up, with the notable absence of James Watt, who resigned after insulting minorities and the Beach Boys. Dennis Wilson of the latter died later of drowning. The world was shocked after Korean flight 007 was shot down by a Soviet fighter, leaving no survivors. 007 came back, however, in the form of Roger Moore and Sean Connery in Octopussy and Never Say Never Again. The force remained with us for the final cosmic resolution in Return of the Jedi. Valley girls gagged us out, like, totally, to the max, ya know? Michael Jackson set records with his record Thriller for number of hits on an album and number of copies sold. Other frequent visitors to Pac-93, Chez-106, and WIGS were Def Leppard, Men at Work, Quiet Riot, and the Police, among others. The Mr. T doll and the heavily sought after Cabbage Patch doll were the favorites at Christmas. Barney Clark’s death touched our real hearts. The country noticed some economic recovery, and Chrysler paid back its debt early. Folks in Gouverneur, NY made it through another 365 days without too much pain. All in all, it seems that we didn’t do too bad. Let’s hope that the year in which you’re reading this is as good as was 1983- On the other hand. I'm sura 1 could learn to like the Beach Boys 133 At last, 6 months and many nights after school later, the Yearbook is done. Many thanks go to John Reynolds for his diligent hard work and good humor. Debbie, Gary, Chris, Bill, and Shannon are to be thanked for work above and beyond. Everyone on staff and helpers should be proud of another great Deanonian. I truly respect and appreciate all my people (see pgs. 134-135) have done for me and you. I’m sure next year’s staff, under the noble direction of Fred Scozzafava, will continue the tradition of fine yearbooks. Best wishes to all of you graduates. I hope life treats you well and please don’t forget good ol’ G.H.S. If however, you find your memory growing dim, just open this book and smile at days of future past. Thank you one and all! (for the praises you will surely be showering on me for this awesome yearbook.) While you’re at it, be sure to thank Alan Betrus, without whom there would surely be no Deanonian. Thanks to all who donated time and pictures, and we’re sorry if we could find no use for them. If your name is misspelled, don’t cry to me! If you were on the staff, we wouldn’t have to stay after school until 8:00 p.m. to make deadlines! Many thanks to the staff, and Good Luck next year, Fred.
