Alma Mater 'Mong the hills of old Saint Lawrence Stands the school we love so well Where we spent so many bright and happy days Its fond memories will linger In our hearts to cheer and bless, As we toil along life’s rough and rugged ways. Then her praises we will sing, Till the echoes ’round us ring, And we’ll sing them with a will forever more, For we’re singing of the glories Of our dear G.H.S. May they echo from the mountains to the shore. When we are set adrifting On the world's cold, dreary tide. And the evening shadows gently o’er us roll. We will like to sit and think about The sons we stood beside When we struggled for the Purple and the Gold. 2 3 Junior Prom PROM Last year’s Prom theme was “Tropical Paradise.” The class memorable prom. Palm trees, crepe streamers, and creative imagin Sipher and Richard McIntyre, are to be commended for their effort 4 Moving Up Day 5 MOVING-UP DAY Moving-up Day is an exciting time when students have a chance to show their advancement. It is symbolic of our taking another step on the path to adulthood. On Moving-up Day, 1982, the classes of GHS, in their respective colors, watched as deserving students received recognition for their achievements. At the close of the ceremonies, each grade moved for- ward in its High School placement as the band played our rousing Alma Mater. 6 OKLAHOMA Following GHS tradition the music depart- ment put on another great show last year in its staging of Oklahoma. The production was directed by Bruce McIntyre, Marylou Scott was in charge of the orchestra and Judi Duff was our choreographer. An outstanding job was done by all members of the cast. Leads were held by Tim Carosi (Curly), Sarah Erdman (Laurie), Maureen McIntyre (Aunt Eller), Scott Jones (Jud Frye), Lenore Griebsch (Ado Annie), Paul Milne (Ali Hakim) and John Reynolds, (Will Parker). They were supported by a fine men’s and women’s chorus. The'professional sounding orchestra, and finally, the backstage workers, combined to make this a superb effort by any standards. 7 8 WA 10 Class of 19t graduation The graduation of the Class of 1982 was indeed a memorable one. Due to inclement weather the ceremonies were held inside, but that didn't dampen any spirits. The choir and band gave ex- cellent performances and the gym was packed with people. Sarah Erdman expounded on the in- dividuality of her class and sincerity’s importance. Beth Pilsbury added a touch of levity, and Craig Gooding’s literary speech could be likened to the work of an English teacher. This unique class offered as its gift a disco ball which will twirl above the heads of GHS students for many years to come. 11 13 14 11 1 15 FRANCE Last year several GHS students spent a part of their Easter vacation in France. This trip was sponsored by the Foreign Culture Club and included ex- tensive touring of French centers of culture. It surely provided many memories that will last the students a lifetime. 17 Mr. F. Harwood Bogardus has played an ac- tive role in the Gouverneur school system for over 24 years. Mr. Bogardus started here as a general science teacher in March of 1962. Prior to being a teacher, Mr. Bogardus served on the Gouverneur Central School Board of Education. Mr. Bogardus, a graduate of St. Lawrence University, a naval officer during World War Two, and a farmer in Macomb tried to both teach and run- his farm at one time. Fortunately for many, many students he chose teaching. In his spare time Mr. Bogardus, a family man with four children, maintains a cottage at Black Lake, where he enjoys boating. He also enjoys country and Western music, and motorcycles. 18 lop Left: Mrs. Bonnie Bettinger, Superintendent of Schools. Top Right: Mr. James Watson, Assistant Superinten- lent of Schools. It marked the first undefeated team in twenty years and the first league champion since 1973. Led by 8 first team all NAC players, the Wildcats also had the distinction of playing in the Syracuse Carrier Dome against Peru. The Wildcats were rated number one large school team in the north by the Watertown Daily Times and Coach Porter was selected the coach of the year by the same source. All League selections were Tom Leonard, Rick Marcellus, David Dodds, Kevin Roberts, Matt Carbone, Eric Tessmer, David Audycki, Robbie Todd, Dave Ouderkirk, Tim Knowlton, David Cummings, Randy Thayer, Mike O’Donnell, and Greg Streeter. This year’s team was a very unselfish, hard working group of players that believed they could win, prepared to win, and thereby reached their ultimate goal of a team championship. The plays action revolves around Dane Hammond (Joanne Bush) and Kate Bix- ley (Kathy Harron), a New York City writer her caustic secretary. Their New England vacation is turned upside down by a tricky real estate agent, Miss Helen O’Toole (Cathy Leader), a country sheriff, sexton, and dog catcher, Vernon Cookley (Andrew Ellis), Jenny (Val Rosenbarker), the maid, Lillian (Tammy Finley), Lyle Rogers (Marty Venton), Randolph (Jim Burt), Philip Smith (Mike Whitton), and Richard Hammond (John Reynolds). Bodies appear and disappear, the result is a closetful of suspense and hilarity. Directed by Joan Taylor and with stage manager, Aileen Milne, Exit ... the Body was fun for all involved and for all who attended. SPIRIT WEEK Spirit Week this year was exciting and totally off beat. Students observed Hay Day and Blue and Gold Day. The class artwork for Decoration Day was excellent and the costumes on Dress Weird Day were anything but ordinary. The week was topped off by the Pep Rally for the athletic department. Following GHS tradition, Spirit Week ’82 was a living testimony to the school spirit existing in the hearts of our students. 101 GUIDES: Left Row 1: Spencer Vance, Marie Absalon, Stella Monroe. K.of Gouverneur 125 was a year of hits and misses. The comedy team was back with the likes of the Blues Brothers, the Festrunck Brothers, Cheech and Chong, Bob and Doug, and Ron and Nancy. Sly Stallone scored another knockout with Rocky III, Bill Murray struck gold in Stripes, and trekkies thrilled to The Wrath of Khan. Porky's and E.T. made a splash, and Garfield took the stage. Outra- geous hairdos and punk outfits made the scene, and an anti-prep movement surfaced. Eddie (Buckwheat) Murphy jumped out of the TV set into our liv s and such groups as Men at Work and The Clash hit the charts. Old favorites flourish, too; the Rolling Stones thrive, The Who played a rousing last tour, and the Rocky Horror Picture Show lives on in college towns everywhere. Walk- men attached themselves to our ears and video games attached themselves to our loose change. Amid this inno- vation, we could still find the public's struggle against nuclear enery, the Polish workers' struggle for solidarity and Reagan's struggle with domestic policy. The year was full of sorrow, too. As Prince Charles and Princess Diana heralded the birth of a royal son, Monaco and America lost a true jewel, Princess Grace Kelly. We passed another year painfully aware of the absence of John Lennon. Comic Genius John Belushi died and left a legacy of laughter in his memory. M A S H ended eleven successful years and Extra-Strength Tylenol ended headaches everywhere. More recently, piano great Eubie Blake passed on, and Tennessee Williams, renowned playwright, died tragically. These losses are felt deeply and lastingly. This has been a year of change, of joy and sorrow, hilarity and anxiety, victory and tragedy. The true realization has been that we are the champions. It was truly a time of Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations Whatever it is called, this year has been a memorable one and the mission has been accomplished. Sometimes its hard to understand Gods reasons, but I thank him for letting Scott be a part of us — even if it was only for a little while. JoAnne Noble 129 Editors Message Now that I’m in the position I’ve been waiting for the three years I find myself struggling to create an appropriate conclusion regarding my ex- periences. I could complain about my small staff and general lack of cooperation, but I have begun to realize that, although it probably delayed the book considerably and increased my workload, I am better off for it all. I would like to thank Kathy Harron, Fred Scozzafava, Val Rosen- barker, Kea Rusch, Jim Burt, and Mr. Betrus for all they’ve done to help get the book done but, more than my heartfelt thanks, they deserve yours. Please be tactful in your criticism, they’ve all given up a great deal of time and effort. A special thanks goes to Heather and Holly Caswell, Carrie Allen, Bill Woodward, and Amy Byrns and all the other yearbook — Guiding Light fans. I appreciate your enthusiasm. I apologize for con- tributing to your boredom after school but I hope your interest persists. You have the potential to produce several fine books if you remain in- spired. An extra special is deserved by Mom for all her support and Scott for teaching me the practical uses for a cropping ruler. Joanne Bush Editor-in-Chief This year I feel better about the progress of the Deanonian staff. The staff has potential I hope will be realized. Editors have been selected for the next four years. Every year some people don’t have pictures on the staff page, this year is no exception. Persons not included were: Holly Caswell, Carrie Allen, Lisa Rich, Carole Reed and William Woodward. (I’ve probably missed others, sorry) It’s late and I haven’t much time, but for the record ... you as students have the future before you. How you treat others and yourself will be the only clue you have to the world which awaits you after graduation. Don’t be the cause of others unhappiness or pain, life is short and friends are few. In closing I wish to thank Joanne Bush who by herself did the majority of this book and whose patience and humor kept the Deanonian spirit alive for the past three years. I’ll miss Kathy and her very much. Fred Scoz- zafava and Kathy Harron are also to be thanked for their important con- tributions to this book. Best of luck to next year’s editor John Reynolds. Thank you one and all Alan Betrus, Adv. 130 p.s. thanks E.T.B. YEARBOOK: LEFT: Pen- ny Kirker, Sandy Stowell, Unidentified back, Sue Foster, Jim Burt. Ivana attended Gouverneur High School from December to March in order to learn the English language. She especially enjoyed the snow and made several friends during her stay. Tim Sell, Andy Stofell, Kathy Har- ron, Casey Whalen, and Paul Milne earned letters of commendation for scores of 179 or better on their PSAT’s. This is an honor and a tribute to their superior academic abilities. 132 . • Under the excellent automotive and photographic auspices of Tammy Finley, these reporters set out to highlight the hotspots of Gouverneur — and they succeed- ed! After sampling the coffee, beer nuts, and pool tables of the exclusive resaurants of past and present, they took in an outdoor film and went for a scenic walk along Main Street. These reporters feel they have touched the heart of Gouverneur and at its many op- portunities for reaction. When finally at the journey’s end, this reporter finds that the hardest part of leaving is get- ting on the bus. So good-bye, G.H.S. — it’s Miller time! 133 In an attempt to raise money for its scholarship fund the Student Council sponsored a highly suc- cessful Winter Weekend. The weekend consisted of a Jr. High dance, a Sr. High dance, and an adult dance as well as the trade fair which featured many local talents demonstrating their crafts. The weekend uiso featured a carnation sale. The Stu- dent Council would like to thank Mrs. Hunt and Paul Milne for being so easy to work for. 134 S. C.
