It denotes our taking another step toward adulthood. Moving-up Day, 1981, took place on a fairly nice day. The classes of GHS, in their respective colors, watched as deserving members of all the classes received honors for deeds well done. At the close, each grade moved forward in their high school placement, as the band musingly played our Alma Mater. 5 Who could forget the 1981 graduation â surely no one who attended! Though the weather was less than perfect, the choir and band were excellent and attendance was high. Sharon Roraback, reading an Erma Bombeck passage, added a touch of levity to this solemn occasion. Laurie Reynolds and Greg Nelson also delivered inspired speeches. Mr. Mayoâs somber speech on the harsh realities of the adult world had a great impact on our views. And, Mr. Der- rigo graciously accepted the graduating classâ gift of a much-needed flagpole from Craig Woods and Paul Audycki. Forever after, the flag of the Class of â81 will fly as an inspiration to the coming generations. 6 Jtr 7 Top: Motel and Perchik join Teyveâs family for the Sabbath; Above Right: Avrahm (Scott Jones) and Yente, the Matchmaker; Above Mid- dle Right: Matchmaker Tzeitel; Above Far Right; Grandma Tzeitel returned; Right: Motel and his proud, new sew- ing machine; Far Right: Fruma-Sarah rages on; Bottom: Yente visits with Golde; Bottom Right; Ryedka (Bob Woods) with Teyve and Lazar Wolfe (Paul Milne). 8 Far Left: Hodel (Melissa Tessmer); Left: Teyve em- braces Chave; Below Left: Teyve and Golde (Willie and Carrie); Rabbi (Chris Easton) dances at the wedding; Bot- tom: Sunrise, Sunset. 9 Fiddler As The Good Book Says.. . Once again, GHS has produced a fine musical in its youthful but already highly respected tradi- tion. Filled with touching human emotion, lively dance, and haunting melodies, âFiddlerâ truly won the hearts of Gouverneur. Under the superb direction of Bruce McIntyre, the fine orchestral leadership of MaryLou Johnson, and the brilliant choreography of Judi Duff, this yearâs musical was a huge success. Ad- miration is due also to the huge number of gifted students, on the stage and behind it, who worked to make âFiddlerâ the best it could be. The story takes place in Anatevka, a Jewish community in Czarist Russia, in 1905, and revolves around the life of Tevye, the dairyman (Charles Palmatier). His wife, Golde, was played by Carrie Sube, and his daughters were Tzeitel (Sarah Erdman), Hodel (Melissa Tessmer), Chava (Lenore Griebsch), Shprintze (Laurie Reynolds), and Bielke (Kathleen Hill). The rest of the cast consisted of Yente (Val Hunt), Motel (Andrew Perry), Perchik (Tim Carosi), Lazar Wolfe (Paul Milne), the Fiddler (Maggie Hurley), and countless others. All involved are to be commended for their fine job. 10 Top Far Left: The Fiddler on the Roof (Maggie Hurley); Far Left: Lazar Wolfe; Above Left: Fyedka and Soldier (Greg Nelson) ready for the stage Prom With the theme âLost in Love,â the class of â82 pro- duced a memorable prom that was a great success. The group âStriderâ played the promâs song as the members of the royal court danced at mid-night! Mrs. Johnson and Mr. Lacy are to be commended as well as the Junior class for a fine job. 12 13 Student Government Day In a valuable learning experience, Gouverneurâs public of- ficials and GHS high school students participated in the annual St. Govt. Day. Various students assume the roles of officials; for example, acting as the village administrator this year was Brian Byrns. Also participating were Amy Andrews, George Wells, Beth Tibbits, Todd Mashaw, and Peter Cappellino. This was sponsored by the Elks Club. 14 15 Gouverneur Board of Education Elected and without pay, these dedicated town people work many long hours to ensure that you, your parents and the tax payers of the Gouveneur Central School District continue to receive the very best in education. 17 Left to Right, Front: Laura Slate, Alexander MacKinnon, Ralph Pilsbury, Nancy Cappellino. Back: Isaiah Serviss, Frank Langevin, Walter Fade, Cur- ran Wade, Dominic Centofanti. Opening the week, Monday was dress weird day, followed by hat day, Olympics, colors day, blue and gold day and everyoneâs favorite, dress-up day. The week ended with a rousing pep rally including the pie-in- the-face for favorite coaches. At times it was a year of sadness and sometimes hope, as Pioneer 2 soared past Saturn and the shuttle reached upward in the quest for knowledge, barbarism held sway over the world. In March an attempt was made on President Reaganâs life followed in May by an attempt on that of the Pope. A third assassination attempt ended in the tragic death of President Sadat of Egypt. Terror reigned in Atlanta until 1982 and Poland withstood martial law as hunger-strikers pleaded their cause in Ireland. At home, the Kansas City Hyatt Regen- cy Hotel catastrophe left one hundred people dead when a balcony collapsed. On the lighter side of 1981, the appointment of the first woman to the Supreme Court was a major step for womenâs equality. In the entertainment world, all tastes were satisfied, whether we fumbled with Rubikâs Cubes, read the Preppy Handbook and Miss Piggyâs Guide to Life, or listened to Kim Carnes rasping âBette Davis Eyes.â The forties flick was revived with Raiders of the Lost Ark; Brooke Shields was naughty again in Endless Love (Not to mention Clavin Klein Jeans) and Lena Horne brought a touch of extra class to Broadway. And the highlight ot the year, of course, the royal wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana, a grand show of pomp, circumstance and courtly splendor. 120 Whiz Quiz: L to R: Maggie Hurley, Paul Milne, Carrie Sube, Jane Bush. 122 307F: Row 1: Richard Petrie, Karen Hewitt, Mickey Griffin, Lori Lynde, Lori Pistolesi, Christine Wright, Raquel Love, Jason Whitton, Teri Webber. The story revolves around the web of intrique encompassing Jay (Tom Mason) and Nessa Wescott (Sarah Erdman). It takes place in their lush, palatial home in Beverly Hills and involves a strange cloning process which changes hopefuls into copies of non-cooperative stars. Jay and the reporter Sally Pierson (Carrie Sube) begin to uncover the goings-on, but are foiled by the evil Doctor Elman (Tom Gleason), Murray (Paul Milne), Malcolm (Tim Carosi), Helga (Sarah Bogardus), Addie (Shawna Barr), and the fiendish clone, Eve (Jeanette Pistolesi). Identities are swapped and the result is a study in suspense. Directed by Joan Taylor and with Kathleen Harron as stage manager. The Clone People was without a doubt, the best Senior play of the year. 127 The Yearbook staff would like to take this opportunity to thank the following people for their support and assistance: Mrs. DeLuca and her typing and sales class Scott Jones Maggie Hurley Kathy Harron Carrie Sube Mary June Mrs. Sipher Heather Caswell Holly Caswell Chris Anderson Jon Hogue Andrew Kelley and anyone else who helped us create this book. Our special Thanks goes to Mr. Betrus. 128 Golf: Row 1: Tom Leonard, Jim Boutilier, Ken Jones. Row 2: Craig Gooding, Bob Burgess. Missing: Greg Nelson. 129 Top: The Yearbook Staff!: Shawna Goodison (Editor-N-Chief), Fred Scozzafava, Joanne Bush (Assistant Editor). Above: Our fearless leader âI Mr. Betrus. 130 Well, I just hope youâre reading this now, and not in 10 years. It really doesnât matter except that in 10 years it will be too late. Too late for you to understand my feelings this June. 1. The book will always arrive late in the year if the staff size does not increase. 2. From this day forward, if you have a complaint and are not on the yearbook staff I will, as politely as possible, tell you to take off. 3. In future years if direct student involvement does not increase I will reduce this book to include staff and seniors, period. One other thought, if you donât wish to be involved (hopefully, you will be considering it by now) with yearbook, at least smile when I take your picture. People moan and groan because their picture isnât in the book and yet everytime a camera comes their way they duck or cover their face. So when you see the camera, smile, for everybody. I, Mr. Betrus, do wish to thank the following: Shawna Goodison, for her continued good nature, hard work and friendship. Joanne Bush, for her devoted diligence and good humor. Fred Scozzafava for helping us out. I should also like to thank Angela Weatherup, Maggie Hurley, Kathy Harron, Jane Bush and Carrie Sube for their help during this year. In conclusion, I would like to take a moment to thank Scott Jones, Tim Carosi and Amber Klock, although not as active on the book this year, as in the past, these good people were there when Mr. B. needed them in years past, and hopefully for years to come. For them as for me, this is truly a year of graduation. Sincerely, Mr. Betrus Thanks again Shawna, Joanne. P.S. Please join Yearbook next year. I have enjoyed working on the Yearbook for the last three years. Working on the Yearbook is very rewarding. I have a great feeling when I hold this book in my hands and think that I helped create something that will be around for a long time. But before I worked on the Yearbook I never realized the amount of apathy that existed in this school. Rather than contributing anything people just sit back and criticize something that they donât like about the book, or say that it arrives too late in the year. If more people would get involved, the book would be here earlier in the year. Itâs a little hard to make deadlines with only a few people working on the book. I would like to give my most sincere thanks to Mr. Alan Betrus (Beezer). Without him as our patient and understanding advisor, I would never have been able to do the book with so few people. Last but definitely not least, I would like to give Joanne Bush, my assis- tant editor, many thanks for all sheâs done for me and this book. Without her you would not be looking at this book right now.
