Alma Mater “Mong the hills of old Saint Lawrence Stands the school we love so well Where we spent so many bright and happy days Its fond memories will linger In our hearts to cheer and bless. As we toil along life’s rough and rugged$rf| S; |k i . Then her praises we will sing. Till the echoes ‘found us ring. And we’ll sing them with a will forever more. For we’re singing of the glories Of our dear old G.H.S. May they echo from the mountains to the shore. When we are set adrifting On the world’s cold, dreary tide, And the evening shadows gently o’er us roll, We will like to sit and think about The sons we stood beside When we struggled for the Blue and the Gold. 2 3 Top left: C’mon Coach, dive in! Wearing their class colors, students move up to their respective posi- tions for another year at GHS. 5 The 1980 com- mencement exer- cises began with the processional of the graduates, each girl carrying a lovely flower. Mr. Mayo, Mr. Derrigo, and class representa- tives each spoke in turn of the suc- cesses and continu- ation of the fine Gouverneur tradi- tion. Diplomas were presented to the 189 graduates by President of the Board of Educa- tion, Alexander MacKinnon. 6 In the Limelight Free Fare The band Free Fare gave two performances at our school last spring. A show was given the morning of Friday, May 16. The latest songs and a spoof of “Stars Wars” went over well, and everyone (with the possible excep- tion of the faculty) was sad it had to end. The second concert was on the night of Monday, May 19. A large crowd attended and there was standing room only. Featured among their songs were the works of Styx, Cheap Trick, and many other contemporary groups. 7 Above: “Babe I’m leaving . ..” Top left: And the beat goes on. Rodger’s and Hammerstein’s “The King and I” The music and drama depart- ments, under the direction of Mrs. Marylou Johnson and Mr. Bruce McIntyre, did a brilliantly done production of “The King and I” last year. This was one of the greatest undertakings for a musi- cal in this community since “Marne.” The cast numbered 84, not including the multitudes enlisted for the full size orchestra, back-stage crew, make-up, etc. Henry Leader and Julie Jones led the cast as the king and Anna. The people involved rehearsed for two months before the production night of March 28 and 29. Other main cast members included Roberta McIntyre, Sarah Erd- man, Andrew Perry, Tim Carosi, Greg French, Paul Milne, Joe Peck, David Shaw, and Scott Gates. Julie Jones forces a nervous smile as one of the king’s wives (Nancy Connor) looks on. 8 Above left: Lady Thiang, first Etc. Etc. Etc, Above left: The Royal Banbkok Academy. Right: How’s this pose Mr. B? 10 Band Day This year’s Band Day attracted a large number of bands, including organizations from as far away as Mexico, New York (who eventually captured a first place for marching excellence). The day’s activities started off with a colorful configuration of snares, trumpets, and flutes known as Massed Band. This served as a warmup for the rest of the day. After lunch came the twirling competition in which various col- orguard and twirling squads competed for such honors as top twirler, best unit, best major, and Majorette. Andrew Perry won the Best Drum Major Award for Gouvern- eur. For its efforts, the Gouverneur High School School marching band received an A-plus rating. Later in the evening came the formal marching competition in front of the grandstand. Band Day continues to be one of the highlights of the St. Law- rence County Fair. Castles in the Sand The Junior Prom of 1980 was held on May 17 from 9 P.M. to 1 A.M. and proved to be a great success. At mid- night, the king and queen were crowned along with their court. William Hatch and Martha French were king and queen with Gerald Mannigan and Sue Sprague as prince and princess. Donald Mannigan and Lenore Griebsch were sophomore attendants, and Peter Cook and Karen Johnson were freshman attendants. The decorations were some of the best ever seen at a prom. Skat provided the final touch to the prom’s tropical air. Cupid’s Arrow Following a valentine tradition, the Sweet- heart Ball was decorated with gaily colored hearts. The king and queen were Marty Perrigo and Diane Empie. The court was made up of prince and princess, Glen Hutton and Mindy Putman; and attendants, Don Mannigan and Lori Mashaw. Activ- ities included screaming, stomping, general wildness, orange passing, and scooter races. Spirit Week was concluded with a band concert in the park, a snake dance, a bon fire, and a blue and gold dance. 16 Far left: Marylou who? Left: Sean and Maggie's father. Bottom to Top, Standing: Lisa Rich, Kristen Mossing, Micheal Whitton, Mark Daily, Spencer Vance, Erick Johnson, Kenny Weatherup. Welcome to the 7th and 8th grade portion of the Gouverneur Deanonian. The Junior High Yearbook Staff has labored long and hard and we hope you enjoy it. This is the first time under the new administration that we have ever had a separate Junior High section. It’s a great feeling, isn’t it? This section was produced by 8 th graders in the hopes that in the next few years the Junior High will be able to begin production of its own yearbook, full of thoughts and pictures of the very difficult transition from child to young adult. The Senior High Band, under the direction of Mr. Charles Palmatier, has been extremely active this year. They have participated in numerous parades during the year and over the summer. Members of the band, along with orchestra and choir participants, sold candles early in the year to raise money for their vari- ous accomplishments. Many band members partici- pated in the Area-All-State concert in Watertown, and some played NYSSMA solos. In February, the band took part in the Festival of Bands in Watertown. They also assumed their annual task of preparing and performing excellent Spring and Christmas concerts. They also played at graduation and presented a Christmas assembly. Members of the band also played a major role in the cast and the orchestra of the musi- cal. The Junior High Band, also led by Mr. Palmatier, gave a nice Christmas assembly for the Junior High students and put on a Christmas and a Spring concert. Serving basically as a learning experience, the Stage Band pres- ents an opportunity for musicians of G.H.S. to be exposed to unique styles of music. Meet- ing as often as possi- ble, the Stage Band rehearsals are relaxed and informal. With a repertoire ranging from Glenn Miller’s Moonlight Serenade to the theme from Chips, the group has an adaptable program; able to do concerts or dances or just enter- tain. Under their leadership the club started the school newspaper, sponsored the open-door stu- dent, and are rewriting their constitution. They are also going to run the school elections, spon- sored a dance for parents, and give an academic scholarship to a deserving senior. Our open-door student this year is Andre Lima Castro from Rio de Janeiro. Although his native language is Portuguese he has taken two years of English. He likes skiing, swimming, and listening to music and his favorite subjects are physics, geography, and technical design. He would like to become a mechanical engineer. SR. Beginning with their second trip to the studios of WWNY, the choir opened up its ’80-’81 debut with a 15 minute tele- vision performance which was highly com- mended. The annual Christmas Concert was per- formed with the usual standard of excel- lence. A significant portion of the Area- All-State choir was made up of musicians from the G.H.C. choir. This year five stu- dents were sent to the New York State Conference All-State Choir. Kristen John- son, Timothy Carosi, Sarah Erdman, Wil- lie Palmatier, and Andrew Perry all partic- ipated in the prestigious group with the lat- ter four also taking part in the All-Eastern Choir. The musical this year, Fiddler on the Roof, was also another event in which part of the Orchestra was active in. All in all the Orchestra lead a productive year. 117 The Marble Village York- er’s, under the direction of Mr. Peter McCarthy, have in the past few years become a formi- dable force in the Yorker pro- gram. At the 1980 Convention in Rochester, the club won an Award of Excellence for its exhibit entitled “Gouverneur — the Village with a Heart of Stone.” A certificate of Merit (equivalent to 3rd place) was also won by a member for a research paper on local history, and a Second Place was also captured in the History Trivia Contest. This year the club will host the 1981 State Convention to be held in Lake Placid in May, and have high hopes for their success. With a promising out- look for History Bowl, the club has entries in the Research Contest, Exhibit Contest, Who’s Who, and Talent Show. The club has also been active on the State level, participating in Advisory Council Meetings and State Committees, with Marble Village Yorker Jane Bush currently serving as State Chairman. Andre comes from a large family, having four brothers. His father is a corporate executive, and Andre enjoys surfing, tennis, jogging, and motorcycles. He plans to put his artistic and mathematical ability to use by becoming an architect. While staying with Hunts, he loved ice cream and TV, and was eager to try ice skating. He found the cold weather hard to tolerate, and said the main dif- ference between the countries was a closer and more open rel- ationship between adults and youth. We sincerely enjoyed Andre’s stay, and look forward to future visits. Some students only dream of seeing faraway, exotic places, but with the help of the American Field Service Summer Pro- gram, Alan Tuttle was able to live in Madrid, Spain for the summer of 1980. Alan, in his letters home, commented that items were rather expensive there. For instance, postage for letters cost from 50 to 75 cents. There are 70 pesos in an American dollar, and a pair of sandals cost him 1285 pesos. For a treat they went to the local Burger King. Their clothing is much like our own, except that shorts are considered “trampy” and can’t be worn. Alah and his family thank AFS for its sponsorship. They’re sure that this was an experience that he’ll never forget. His mother commented, “I know it’s the greatest thing that could have happened to him. Thank you AFS! 121 It's not often that the students of G.H.S. receive a visit from a messenger of God, but upon the evenings of Novem- ber 21 and 22 he made it known who was God’s Favorite. Jamie Brown gave a “flaming” per- formance as Sydney Lipton, the bearer of God’s word to Joseph Benjamin, who was energetically portrayed by Willy Palma- tier. The story centers around Joe’s struggle with his wacky wife, (Sharon Roraback), an ungrateful son, (Andrew Perry), and his insipid twins, Ben and Sarah, (Stuart Crossman and Nancy Connor), as he attempts to convince them that he was visited by a messenger of God. Joe even has a few difficulties in convincing his ever faithful maid and butler, Mandy and Morris, (Pam Hoghtoand Randy Zehr). As the play progresses there is no ques- tion that Joe is telling the truth. The heat is turned off, the family credit is ruined and the family business and house are ruined by fire. In the end Joe’s ordeal is finally ended and, although he is tested to the limit, he remains God’s Favorite. Directed by William Appleby and with Leslie Blair as stage manager, God’s Favorite was Gouverneur’s smash com- edy of the year. Second place was won by Carrie Sube and Jamie Brown. Originated by the Misses Cora and Jenny Dean, the prizes were for many years available through their estate. Now the contest is continued through the generosity of the Gouverneur Rotary Club. Con- gratulations to all involved. 123 Top: Mr. Abbot Leo- nard. Right: Mr. Lacey Jones. The Second Annual Rock Island Run started out the fun, fol- lowed by an art show and special exhibits at the Historical Society Museum. On the 4th of July a celebration ceremony took place with fireworks, a parade and the carrying in of the Olympic Torch. As the weekend neared, so began the Third Annual 24 Hour Relay-Marathon, ending with an awards presentation and the extinguishing of the torch. 129 1980-81 IN REVIEW 1981 marked the beginning of a chapter in history and just as each new decade has begun in the past, so the eighties began with a bang. 1981 was a year for disasters. The explosion of Mt. St. Helens on May 18th, destroyed millions of acres of land and left sixty-one dead. Its effects are still being felt. Elsewhere a catastrophic earthquake in Italy left thousands homeless and hurricane David caused mil- lions of dollars damage in the Gulf of Mexico. Another so-called “disaster” was the 1980 election with the majority of voters claiming to pick the lesser of two evils and many chosing Anderson as an alterna- tive. For better or worse, Ronald Reagan became our 40th president. 1981 was also a year for national pride. After numerous upsets, including a failed rescue attempt, it looked as though the American hostages in Iran would come home and the U.S. was ready with yellow rib- bons everywhere. Finally on January 20th (which by some strange coincidence, happened to be Inaugura- tion Day), the hostages came home. America rejoiced. One year before in February 1980, America roared with patriotism at the Lake Placid Oyympics as Eric Heiden won five gold medals in speed skating as expected and the U.S. Hockey team stole a miraculous gold which was totally unexpected. In the entertainment world we saw the death of John Wayne and the murder of Lennon, possibly the most influential artist of the 20th century. The eighties also brought two new sex-pots into fame and fortune, Bo Derek and the infamous Miss Piggy. ... and of course who can forget those September evenings as all America stayed home nervously watch- ing TV, dieing to know, “Who shot J.R.?” 130 As America begins another decade, the Deanonian has, in keeping step, taken on a new look .. . And what better way to present this new look than through the media, and what more appropriate choice than one of the best known magazines in the U.S., The National Geographic. Through this magazine, the Deanonian has become a 1981 National Geographic report on Gouverneur and its people right from the cover with a school house, exemplifying the “good old” simplicity of the North Country to a special senior’s fold-out page. The Deanonian staff wishes to express its deep gratitude to the National Geographic Society for the use of its magazine cover, trademark and format. Thank you. 131 1981 DEANONIANs IN CONCLUSION □ With the upheaval of world affairs, changes in government and the coming of the modern world to the people more and more each day, it was deemed necessary to conform our own school. Even as the original section of the Gouverneur High School was being reconstructed, the Deanonian changed. Though revealed in a modern mode, the Deano- nian was able to hold onto northcountry heritage through a symbol. The little red school house is a representation of the simplicity of Northern New York. This symbol is the purity of life and the remembrance of people — our people and our lives. 133 Top: Row 1: Evelyn Pierce, Maggie Hurley. We hope that we have accomplished this end to the satisfaction of the student body. With a large staff for the first time in many years and a room designated solely for yearbook use, I found my work to be greatly eased from that of past yearbook endeavors. I would like to extend a special thanks to the people who made this book possible. To Liz Gleason for our cover work, to my able staff, especially Laurie Reynolds, Shawna Goodison, and to my assistant, Joanne Bush. 1 would also like to thank Linda Conklin and Sandy Owens of the 1979 Deanonian who taught me the ropes. Last but not least I extend my thanks to Mr. Betrus who has withstood the terrors of yearbooking for three years and put up with my procrastination through thick and thin! Scott Jones Editor-in-Chief I wish to thank the yearbook staff for their dedication and hard work in produc- ing this year’s Deanonian. Without these people’s output your only memories would be thoughts, not words and pictures. Scott Jones, Laurie Reynolds, Joanne Bush, and Shawna Goodison (next year’s editor) are to be especially commended for their true school spirit. , rl970,6 Alan Betrus Advisor 135 Standing: Isaiah Serviss, Frank Langeuin, Dave Sipher, Paul McAdam, Walter Fade, Curran Wade.
