ADVANCEMENT Moving Up Day is second only to Graduation in the show of ad- vancement. Working to fulfill the goal of becoming an adult, we have all reached another step in that direction. Moving Up Day, 1979, was met by a bright, warm day. Each class, in its respective colors, spent an eventful two hours, as hard working individuals received nu- merous honors. At the closing, each class took its place, a step forward in their high school placement, as the band played the Alma Mater. 2 OPENING SPORT Track team members — Front row: Datus Brown, Rodney Dashnaw, Dave Denesha. Back Row: Henry LaQuier, Ken Stowell, Kurt Wells. A WISH Things seemed hesitant at first, but the Class of 1980 pulled through to produce an excellent Junior Prom. The theme was, Wish Upon a Star. Chosen as king and queen were seniors Nick Carbone and Jayne Gi- rard. Bill Hatch and Jackie Kitchen were prince and princess. The attendants were Shelly Spilman and Gerry Mannigan. Under the leadership of Mr. Barry French, class members cut hundreds of tin stars, cre- ated beautiful murals, and even built a whale to turn the Prom into a wonderful success. Welcome friends, says Mr. French Lonnie Manning and Shelley Spilman enjoy the evening's music. Gerry Mannigan, Bill Hatch, Jackie Kitchen, and Shelly Spilman. Gerti Premm and Bruce Knowlton buy their tickets for a fun filled evening. 4 OPENING Mrs. Hunt proves you're not getting older, you're getting better. Jayne Girard is queen for the evening. IN SEARCH . . . FAR OFF LANDS AND DISTANT SHORES August 7-28, six students went to France, aided by the Rotary Club. These people were Patti Andrews, Martha French, Trish Grout, Henry Leader, Kathy Mullen, and Joan Johnson. While there they lived with host families in different parts of France. Some went to other countries such as: Belgium, England, Italy, Germany, and Switzerland. During these three weeks they visited the disco- theques, drank the wine, and met native countrymen from all over Europe. Henry Leader expressed it best by saying, I want to go back! IN SEARCH . . . FRIENDSHIP Jody puts the squeeze on Lori. Senior High School Libr One of the most important things a person can have is not material or bought for a price; it is the simplicity of friendship. Valued over all else, people need someone to share a moment with, whether it be one or many of their friends. Looking back, one remembers crazy parties, like a lunch table salute to Laurie Foster (Class of '79), idle gossip, and a nutty summer day during graduation rehearsal. Amy Hall and Shelley Spilman after a hard softball workout. OPENING 7 By Alan Tuttle By Betty Foster OPENING 9 IN SEARCH OF .. . MEMORIES A NOSTALGIC LOOK AT THE 70'S The close of a decade. The world we live in changes more rap- idly every day, as industrial technology and world relations seemingly create more problems than they solve. The constant cloud of nucleur holocaust by our own hand continues to drive our generation on in a blind run. Government integrity has been dented innumerable times both in the present and in the recent recorded past. Large corporations are on the block for everything from price gouging to consumer safety and fraud. Vietnam end- ed in total tragedy, and every day repercussions of that ill fated conflict fill the papers. At a time when so many world leaders are calling for peace, peace seems to be slipping further away. We had hoped to make this a happy conclusion to a rather mun- dane but revealing decade, however reality paints a different picture. Music has gone full circle and has once again returned to basic rock and roll with an electronic twist. Dead forever are the Beatles, Kiss should be so fortu- nate. We've gained new friends and allies with China, a situation which has put the Bear Russia on the of- fensive. The oil cartel has begun flexing its very influential muscles. The civil rights movements of the 60's has melted into every day life, and now the ERA will be a fine feather in the cap of humanity. Hu- manism is finally being given a chance at long last. Perhaps the goal of world peace rests in our genera- tion's hands, and our children will be the seed of a brave new world. 10 OPENING WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO TV VIOLENCE BIG CARS VW BEETLES THE YEAR OF THE CHILD NEW MATH SALT I SALT II SKYLAB 1 SPEED BICYCLES THE FONZ FARAH FAWCETT SHAMPOO OIL PRICES ASBESTOS DC 10 CARGO DOORS SUSAN B ANTHONY DOLLARS NUCLEUR SAFETY SACCHARIN HARD BUBBLE GUM WONDER WOMAN THE OZONE LAYER GOLD OPENING 11 ACHIEVEMENT 12 OPENING OPENING 13 Now, this cord plugs in l re and . . 14 OPENING Using the solitude of the library to enjoy a book. OPENING 15 IN SEARCH OF .. . SPIRIT Great enthusiasm went into the annual Spirit Week at GHS, a wild and crazy six days of just letting go. Football, soccer, and cross country received a boost of spirit to help their season games. Aside from the yelling contest and games at the pep rally, there was also a student teacher volleyball game, a dress weird day, a bring a stuffed animal day, and, last but not least, a blue and gold day. A blue and gold dance finished off the week. This year's students exibited a great deal of school spirit with participation in all __________________________________ events. f Mr. Palmatier will get revenge. Mr. French is a messy eater! Evelyn, who arrived in the U.S.A. in August and plans to leave in June, is residing at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Barry French. She comes from a family of four, consisting of two sisters, Jacira who is 16 and Jagira who is 9, and a brother, Gustazo, 22. For hobbies, she likes listening to music and reading, with an expressed interest in watching sporting events. She is also an avid stamp collector. Staying active, Evelyn participated in the AFS. She was involved with the AFS Hal- loween Party, which was considered a great success by all. Also, she was involved with the Gouverneur hosted District AFS weekend which included Gouverneur's Annual Santa Claus Parade as well as the first GHS Class Olympics. The AFS team placed well and Evelyn gave an encouraging pep talk. Evelyn is involved with the school choir and participated in both the Christmas and Spring concerts as well as the Area- All-State performance. Shortly before Christmas, she along with the rest of the choir, traveled to Watertown, to the studios of WWNY Radio-TV station to record a Christ- mas program that was aired December 19th at 5:00 p.m. She ivas also a member of the Wildcat Girls' Soccer team. When comparing the U.S. to her Brazilian home town, she notes that there are some minor differences, but suprisingly says they are pretty much the same. School is very different, the atmosphere being much more free, she says. Evelyn quickly adds that by far what she finds most enjoyable is snow, a thing loathed and dreaded by many of us. But in general, everywhere I go people are very much the same, says Miss Jansson. This past summer Graciela Placci (sister of Dan Placci; ex- change student in '78) and Cecilia Elvarez visited the McAdam family from March 19-25 during their stay in Liverpool, N.Y. Since then they have been visited in Rio Cuarto, Argentina, their home, by the McAdams. The two girls have since graduated from high school and are each taking courses for their University Entrance Exams. Graticiela is hoping to be an interpreter, and Cecilia hopes to get into economics. Graticiela's brother Dan, is taking an interview for a jour- nalism job on a major Central Argen- tinian newspaper. AFS also sponsored Richard Roe on a trip to Ecquador over the summer in 1979. In March AFS hosted the Cole All Star Circus, and in May, it hosted the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra. Alan Tuttle and Bill Leader were chosen as Americans Abroad summer candidates for this year. Richard Roe was the AFS Summer Program '79 student to Ecquador. He lived in the mountain city of Iganna with his host family, the Urrestais. Richard toured Ecquador extensively, travelling from the Andes Mountains to the Pacific Coast, and even visiting neighboring Columbia. About his AFS trip, Richard com- mented, It was probably the most re- warding experience I have participated in. I learned a new language, met new friends, and lived with a terrific fam- ily. Ecquador is a diverse country, with modern cities and Indian villages, ice- capped mountains and tropical jungles. AFS is the best way to appreciate and explore a different culture. GROUPS 77 AFS students from the north country engineered a float for and participated in the Christmas parade. On January 5th, 1980, Maria Eugenia Avalos arrived from Santiago, Chile. Maria stayed with Marylou Johnson until March 21st. Maria is sixteen years old and comes from a family of five with two sisters, Maria Paz, 14, and Maria Teresa, 11. Her mother is a math teacher and her father is a professor of Physics at a uni- versity. Maria Eugenia told us that school here is dif- ferent than in Chile. School starts in March and lasts until November with two semesters. There is no choise of subjects and the schedule is differ- ent from each day of the week. A school day lasts from 8:15 to 4:15, 5 days a week on a one to sev- en grading system. Each child begins school with pre-kindergarden and continues thru twelth. Uniforms are required. Maria's hobbies are reading, drawing, and playing the guitar. She speaks French, Spanish, and English, and her favorite subject is math. Still under the guiding hand of Mr. Palmatier, the GHS Band is forever upholding the tradition of fine musicianship, perfor- mance, and conduct. With the usual excellent concerts at both Christmas and Spring, the band also broke into some interesting variations. The old Pep Band got a new name and a new outlook. In a flash it became The All-Purpose People's Pep Band! It played at all of our pep assemblies as well as the annual downtown Santa Claus Parade. That little group that plays at basketball games took on a permanent identity! In the compact form, a small ensem- ble became the Kingston Trio Plus One. A larger model per- formed as the Flying Zukenis and they, along with the Twirlers made an excellent half-time ap- pearance. The band has again left us waiting for more. They played on intense defense which held eleven of their fourteen opponents to twenty points or under. The keys to this defense were a strong defensive center in Mindy Putman and two very quick guards. Barb Brasie and Darlene Dusharm. One of the most important factors was the strong bench of eighth and ninth graders who could be sub- stituted when needed without a loss of the game continuity. Their teamwork and determination gave the girls a very suc- cessful season. Finishing their second undefeated season, the girls varsity basketball team again captured the Section 10 Title proving themselves to be the team to beat. The lady Wildcats provided excellent entertainment for hometown basketball fans. Four of the girls received All-Northern honors at the end of the sea- son. Back row: Scott Jones, Alan Tuttle (Editor), Tim Carosi. Missing: Janet Rastley. As editor of this years Deanonian, I have learned much about human na- ture and relations. As my staff slowly dwindled in size and my work load steadily increased, I began to see the real problem that faces our generation today. I speak, of course, of involvement, in social and work situations. I hope in the years to come our stu- dent body can gain a high level of rec- ognition for achievements well done. I wish to thank Laurie Reynolds for her perseverance, especially during my absence. Shawna Goodison and Ja- net Rastley both did fine work and without whose help my job would have been ten fold. Once again this year, as advisor, I find the yearbook running later than it should. This is not my staff's fault, but more the fault of general student apa- thy. The number of people on yearbook staff has declined drastically since 1976. If the current trend contin- ues, I will have no choice but to rec- ommend an end to the Deanonian as we know it. Please consider this possi- bility in the 1981 yearbook. Yearbook work is neither glamorous nor exciting, it is just what it is, work. The reward, of seeing your creative document for future generations, is an excitement that comes from a feeling of pride and accomplishment. The 1980 yearbook was produced by a very small but dedicated group. Janet Rastley (our only Senior and typist), Shawna Goodison (Sales), Laurie Reyn- olds (Assistant Editor) and Alan Tuttle (Editor). Thanks to Alan's and Laurie's con- tinued good nature and hard work, you have the book in front of you now. In closing I would like to extend thanks to the staff. Amber Klock, Tim Carosi and Scott Jones, who helped in producing this, our 1980 Deanonian. A special thanks goes out to Alan Tuttle and Laurie Reynolds.
