TO ONE WHO ACCEPTED THE CHALLENG Twenty-two years ago Merton L. VanSant came to the Gouverneur School Sys- tem as the director of elementary education. After eleven years as the director, he dared to accept a higher position which was more challenging. During the next eleven years serving as the superintendent of schools, he overcame various obstacles. In dedicating this Deanonian to Mr. VanSant, we, the class of 1973, offer our thanks for all he has contributed to our education. We give our best wishes to him in his future undertakings.

A call echoes throughout the land leaving us a message: I dare you to be bigger than you are, to join the adventure of life! I urge you to be strong and to stand up to reality! Think young people; develop yourselves as creative and worthwhile persons of good character. Refuse to be satisfied to skim the coastline; plunge into the depths of the sea. Venture, and fulfillment will be yours. DARE to do YOUR thing! In response to this clarion call, we no longer sit idle. We take our challenge. Occasionally we stumble, but we continue to fight, to stand straighter and to grow. We turn aside the trivial and accept responsibility and adulthood. With the help of parents, teachers, and friends and through our own searching, we widen our horizons. We discover that: The cowards never start; The weak fall by the way; Only the strong succeed. We will move to meet each new challenge, and we will not cease to aim and to achieve. We have finished a minute portion of our goals. As we reflect upon the year that has passed, let us measure our progress. 5 Bn
