DEANONIAN 1973 Volume 47 Gouverneur High School Gouverneur, New York 3 TO ONE WHO ACCEPTED THE CHALLENG Twenty-two years ago Merton L. VanSant came to the Gouverneur School Sys- tem as the director of elementary education. After eleven years as the director, he dared to accept a higher position which was more challenging. During the next eleven years serving as the superintendent of schools, he overcame various obstacles. In dedicating this Deanonian to Mr. VanSant, we, the class of 1973, offer our thanks for all he has contributed to our education. We give our best wishes to him in his future undertakings. A call echoes throughout the land leaving us a message: I dare you to be bigger than you are, to join the adventure of life! I urge you to be strong and to stand up to reality! Think young people; develop yourselves as creative and worthwhile persons of good character. Refuse to be satisfied to skim the coastline; plunge into the depths of the sea. Venture, and fulfillment will be yours. DARE to do YOUR thing! In response to this clarion call, we no longer sit idle. We take our challenge. Occasionally we stumble, but we continue to fight, to stand straighter and to grow. We turn aside the trivial and accept responsibility and adulthood. With the help of parents, teachers, and friends and through our own searching, we widen our horizons. We discover that: The cowards never start; The weak fall by the way; Only the strong succeed. We will move to meet each new challenge, and we will not cease to aim and to achieve. We have finished a minute portion of our goals. As we reflect upon the year that has passed, let us measure our progress. 5 Bn ADMINISTRATION BOARD OF EDUCATION: SITTING: Mr. Cook, Mr. McAllaster, Mr. Gates, Mr. Murphy, Mr. Bigelow. STANDING: Mr. Steele, Mr. Orford, Mr. Knowlton, Mr. Byrns. MR. JOSEPH A. NETTO As I have assumed the new posi- tion as your Superintendent of schools, I found it different from being a principal of a junior high school. In these first ten months, I discovered a feeling of proud- ness and satisfaction from the fine quality of students and from the excellent staff we have ac- quired over the years. Generally speaking, the student body has established a personality equaled by none. Please accept my thanks for being respectful, hard- working, and polite. I dare you all to continue to achieve these goals. Good luck to you in future endeavors. Principal - MR. PICKARD To the Class of 1973: The Class of 1973 lives in an exciting time. Many changes have taken place in your life such as the flight to the moon, fight- ing and bloodshed in various parts of the world, new and varied con- cepts of living, and a wonderful yearbook to refresh your memories of Gouverneur High School. Your future holds many chal- lenges for you - continued educa- tion for some, earning a living for many, and marriage and family for others. I dare you to accept these challenges and to continue to make a better world for you and the generation to come. Best wishes for your future. Charles H. Pickard, Principal Vice Principal - MR. GARNER 7 L. TO R. : Mr. Hurley, Ms. Arnold, Mr. Sadler. GUIDANCE The main functions of the Guidance Department are to counsel students in the areas of planning high school programs and to assist in personal problems. The career information available is valuable in help- ing the student discover more about himself and his interests and abilities. He can then plan for a career after receiving a high school diploma. Our Guidance Department consists of three very capable counselors who are sincerely interested in the students as individuals. They are willing to talk to the students and help them meet the challenges of future life. 8 FAC U LTY iLHIfclf: 9 PITCH CLUB FACULTY INDEPENDENT STUDY PROGRAM (ADVANCED SECTION) L. Some kids never grow up! Don’t cry, we're on your side. Would someone listen to me! 20 College acceptances are nerve racking. What assignment was I supposed to take home? I look at it this way, Tom. That was some party! 21 The Thinker! We have the greatest show on earth. We, the Class of 73, urge you, future graduating classes, to do as we did during our prosperous years. We have done many things, but remember we did them for your benefit as well as ours. We had the nerve to sell our industrious bodies as slaves to underclassmen and faculty. Our ambitious members fed hungry spectators at basketball games and wrestling matches. Our final goal at G.H.S. is graduation, but still, many horizons await to challenge us. We hope you will profit from your high school experiences as much as we have. 22 BRENDA L. Class of '70, Perhaps the Class of 76 is not a single chemical element, but they are part of the whole of G.H.S. They are challenged to be accepted as tomorrow's leader instead of the bottom rung of the ladder. Summer Program Residence: Family of A. D. V. Reddy in Hyerabad, India The 'summer of 72' was a time of an indi- vidual's awakening. Adapting to a strange culture can often be exasperating but tmly re- warding. One aspect I hope to retain is an easy pace of life. India lacks the constant pressures of rushing ... There were many happy events during my stay and a few tragic ones - but then, that's life ... A.F.S. isn't just a fun vacation abroad. Dealing with people and the process of giving and taking can present problems. The road is not a simple one, but the goals that can be reached are simply beautiful ... I believe a challenge lies here right now for the local A.F.S. chapter and for Gouverneur as a community. This book was created by challenges not only to those who formulated its content, but through you individuals who demanded reforms. Even with the many obstacles and tedious moments, we kept striving to meet our dead- lines and to develop a Deanonian that would be approved by the constituents of this school. We wish to express our thanks to the faculty, students, Mr. Conway, Taylor's representative, Mr. Griffin, and Mr. Pickard. A special thanks is given to Ms. Sobieski for her unselfish character and patience.
