DEANONIAN 1958 PRESENTED BY THE SENIOR CLASS OF GOUVERNEUR HIGH SCHOOL SOUVERNEUR, NEW YORK Hi! I’m Willy. Willy Wildcat, if you want to be formal and shake paws. My den is in Gouverneur High School and I can usually he found lurking in the corridors, growling ferociously at the games, rockin’ and rollin’ with the other “cats” at the dances, or even sitting in a classroom sharpening my mental claws. What am I doing there? I’m the spirit of G.H.S., that’s w'hat. I’m proud, giggly, friendly, likeable (if I say so myself), cheerful, cynical, studi- ous, lazy, sleepy, overworked, bored, hungry, and—w'ell, come along on a jaunt through the pages of my yearbook, the Dcanonian and see for yourself. I’ll be the host. Meow’! STUDENT COUNCIL One of the main projects of G.H.S.’s governing body, the Student Council, has been to collect the various school trophies, polish them, and put them in the trophy cases throughout the school. They also furnished flowers for each faculty member on Teachers’ Recognition Day, and in the spring they conducted elections for class officers. In addition, they handled many other details of stu- dent government. The local president, James Morley, is also president of the Northern New York Federation of Student Councils. Foreign Exchange Student Committee—The Foreign Exchange Student Committee, a sub- division of the Student Council formed in the second year of G.H.S. participation in the program, found foster parents and raised money to bring another foreign student to Gouverneur. This year’s visitor was a German student, Friedrich Busch. Dance Committee—This year the Dance Committee sponsored the Football Victory Dance, the Thanksgiving Ball, and the dances after home basketball games. New records were bought regularly to supplement the record file. The Committee also decided to purchase art supplies for decorations and sell them to clubs wishing to sponsor a dance. SENIOR PLAY Henry, a nefarious villian, tries to swindle Mary, a wealthy art lover. To help convince Mary that she is insane he brings in his gang (crazy themselves). He eliminates the maid, Rose, and Mary’s chatty friend, Lucy. In vain Mary appeals to Phyllis and Peter (the romantic element) and M. Rosenburg a French (?!) art dealer. Finally she is rescued by her pompous banker, Mr. Foster. The senior play was different this year in two ways. First, it was a straight drama instead of the usual light comedy. Secondly, many of the parts were double-cast so that more seniors could participate. MARCHING BAND The Marching Band, under the leadership of Mr. Townsend, is so adept in the execution of its drills that it has become one of the most impressive marching bands in the league. The band has appeared at football games with Massena, Ogdensburg, Canton, and Fulton. It made a commun- ity appearance in the Halloween parade and the Memorial Day parade. The band is to be congratu- lated on its fine showing. CONCERT BAND OFFICERS President ------- Thomas Laverghetta Librarian __________ Shirley Mallette Manager --------------- James Rich The Concert Band, accompanied by the Senior High Chorus, presented a formal concert the evening of March 27. The group appeared in several assemblies and also served as a pep band at basketball games. SENIOR HIGH ORCHESTRA This has been a busy year for the Senior High Orchestra. In September this group performed for the Northern Zone Teachers Conference in Potsdam. The Christmas Concert was a combined production by the Senior High Orchestra, Senior High Chorus, Junior High Chorus, elementary school choruses, A Cappella Choir and the string ensemble. The orchestra also furnished music for the Senior Play, Dean Oratorical Contest, Baccalaureate services and Commencement. Some twenty students were chosen for All State in Potsdam in November. Charlotte Walrath, one of the mem- bers was accepted for the state N.Y.S.S.M.A. conference in Rochester. During the year the orchestra prepared and performed programs in the elementary schools and one assembly program in Ogdens- burg. Fourteen members participated in the musical “Finian’s Rainbow.” The orchestra also took part in the May Festival in Potsdam. (47) G. H. S. VARSITY FOOTBALL CHAMPIONS I957 I95 was a year of destiny for the Wildcat Eleven. Coach LaFalce’s charges won for Gouverneur High School its first championship since 1916, losing only one game, the first, to Massena by one point. The light, but spirited and highly versatile, locals displayed a desire that overwhelmed their oppo- nents. A contributing factor decisive in the Deanmen’s success was the well balanced attack in the air and on the ground. The team further displayed its skill by defeating Fulton, a non-league team, by a score of 34-0. Nine members of this year’s aggregation will be lost through graduation. Pat Collins, senior halfback, was selected a member of the All Upstate Team by the Syracuse Herald-American. (50) mm J. V. VARSITY BASKETBALL The Dean High five finished in third place this year behind Massena and Malone. The locals were really impressive during the course of the season. A team composed of mostly juniors blended together and put forth spirited play. Toward the end of the campaign the Wildcats became united and displayed a well balanced attack. Dave White and Pete Burgess were named to the second “All Northern League Team” and Bob Dier was a member of the third team. J. V. BASKETBALL The Junior Varsity basketball team also compiled an eleven and five record losing twice to Malone and O.F.A. and once to Tupper Lake. It was an outstanding season for a group of inexperienced cagers. VARSITY WRESTLING This year, Gouverneur’s wrestlers had a successful season, for, although hampered by injuries, the locals made an impressive showing. With only three seniors lost through graduation, the grapplers are confident of an outstanding campaign next year. Jay Morley, a senior, was the only matman to win a sec- tional title. J. V. WRESTLING The junior matmen of G.H.S. went through their nine-meet season with- out a loss. It was the second consecutive undefeated campaign for the local juniors. Coach Jones feels that next year’s varsity team will be aided greatly by the young talented grapplers from the Junior Varsity. JUNIOR HIGH The Junior High spent its second year in the old grammar school down- town. This tended to isolate them from Senior High and they carried on their own activities independently. As a result two new clubs, Junior High News- paper Club and the Library Helpers, were started and a new musical group, the Drum and Bugle Corps, was formed. On the athletic side, they held several series of intramural sports, competing by homerooms, and had two basketball teams that played with other schools. The seventh and eighth graders man- aged to hold their usual class parties and to attend a few assemblies in the Dolan auditorium. Although they are making the best of the old, crowded building, the Junior High looks forward to the time when G.H.S. will again be united into one unit. Brown CUSTODIANS AND BUS DRIVERS Neither sleet nor snow nor gloom of night fazes the faithful bus drivers! Driving everything from tiny station wagons to huge transports in shades of yellow, orange, green, and even red, G.H.S. chauffeurs brought students from all corners of the large district to school at 8:15 (approx- mately) and took them home in shifts ranging from 3:15 to 5 :3c). Besides all this, they transported the teams and the enthusiastic fans to out-of-town games. Who is it who empties the wastebaskets, sweeps the floor, replaces light bulbs and paper towels, runs the furnace, and opens locked lockers? Not the little elves, but the hard-working custodians, that’s who. Every afternoon after the thundering horde leaves, they are hard at work erasing the day’s accumulation of dirt. Without their housecleaning, G.H.S. would hardly be fit for civilized habitation. Our thanks to both these groups of loyal workers! And now from me, Willy, to all of you — Grrrr - Bye! 3fn Jflemortam ARTHUR COMPO This May the Gouverneur school system was shocked by the sudden death of Mr. Compo, an eighth grade teacher. Mr. Compo, an alumnus of Cortland Normal, taught in this area for thirty years. After teaching for one year at Russell, he spent from 1928 to 1955 as principal and sixth, seventh and eighth grade teacher at the Hailesboro school. A special friend to underprivileged students, he was loved and respected by all his pupils. Note: Because the book was already printed at the time of Mr. Compo’s death. This item appears here. odd
